Popular literature on corporate cultures presents stories about the importance of management's values. This article reports statistical analyses based on data obtained from middle and top managers employed by manufacturing companies. Results show that companies pursuing a strategy of cost leadership possess cultures emphasizing pragmatic values and strong performance norms. Moreover, these values and norms relate significantly with managers' career satisfaction and their organizational commitment.  相似文献

As Europe gears up to a Single Internal Market, so there is greater need for information to allow the investor to compare companies operating in the several European countries.Financial information on profits, asset values, return on investment, etc are published in Annual Reports. The author was involved in the 1973–1974 acquisition chase in the U.K. and in the Pacific Basin while working for a British company noted for its acquisitiveness. A mystique has grown up around those people who buy companies and individuals who surround themselves with secrecy and charisma are hiding one essential fact; appraising target companies is not very different from appraising any other direct investment. In the field of organizational behavior, the term “diffusion” has come to be implicitly paired with the concept of innovation and a peculiar set of conceptual choices. We explore how this came about, and examine the evolution of the concept “diffusion” from its inception in the English language through its use in the natural and social sciences to its current meaning in organizational research. A sensemaking perspective on researchers’ cognition helps us explain the changing meaning of the concept, and alerts researchers to the subtle but far-reaching effects of revisions in a field's conceptual language. Even though the field of organizational studies ostensibly treats diffusion as a neutral phenomenon, it implicitly narrates diffusion as a mechanical and positive process that should be welcomed and encouraged. The implications of this reframing become even more important with the increasing focus on innovation in recent diffusion studies. The diffusion of new products among consumers and the diffusion of market institutions around the world are things of a rather different nature and consequence, but treating them as implicitly equivalent “innovations” that “diffuse” naturalizes and hence legitimates them. We conclude by noting implications of our findings for exploring the evolution of meaning for other concepts, and their utilization in research on organizations.  相似文献

This paper describes a model which may be used in the evaluation of the relative effectiveness of policies used in the areas of ship chartering and the switching of combined carriers between the dry cargo market and the tanker market. The policies for chartering and market switching are expressed in the form of ‘desired proportions’ of the fleet operating in a particular charter-mode or a particular market. Graphical illustration of this form of expression of policies can be easily understood, so that alternative policies can be designed with relative ease. The effectiveness of a particular form of policy under various freight market conditions can be determined from the model, the use of which is illustrated by its application to the deployment of the fleet of an hypothetical shipping company. It is assumed that the feedback connection between the company's actions and the marketplace is negligible.  相似文献

Since 1966, the Indian Government has progressively restricted imports of technology. Together with constraints on the growth of big business houses and of foreign firms, the next consequence of the Government's policies has been that it takes 3–5 years for a large firm to get a sanction for the import of technology and its utilization; this entails advance planning of technology imports, and advance action for the generation of alternatives within the country, should the imports not be allowed.

The restrictions on technology imports accentuated the need for internal research and development; at the same time, the recession that began in 1966, and whose effects still continue to be felt in some sectors, squeezed industrial profits and limited the resources that could be allocated to R & D. Hence large Indian firms have felt the need for methods of rational allocation of R & D resources among competing projects, and a number of them have been feeling their way towards general criteria of allocation. Some of their efforts are described here. They are essentially exploratory; but since R & D management is still a problematic area even in industrial countries, an analysis of Indian practices is perhaps of more general interest.  相似文献

In recent years few US and European executives have been faced with the task of managing in a highly complex, dynamic business environment. There is a growing awareness of the need to consider the interests of a variety of stakeholder groups when making business decisions. This awareness has quickly become a requirement for executives across the globe, even among those in Japanese firms who have historically been less encumbered due to different societal, cultural, and business expectations. The paper presents some results relating to the degree of disclosure of selected important items of information in company annual reports. The research involved deriving an index of disclosure and this was then applied to the annual reports of 100 stock exchange quoted companies. The general conclusion was that disclosure levels are very low and that there is a big demand for greater amounts of information to be released in annual reports.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a multinational corporate structuring problem. This problem involves designing a corporate/organisational structure (across different countries) so as to remit profits from a number of subsidiaries to a single parent company, whilst minimising the tax paid (maximise the amount received at the parent company). This corporate structure is constrained to be a (directed) tree structure.We present a mixed-integer zero-one formulation of the problem that (for the test problems examined) provides very good linear programming relaxation bounds. We also present a tabu search heuristic for the problem which, when combined with the bounds provided by the linear programming relaxation, is able to find provably optimal solutions. Extensions to the basic corporate structuring problem and how they can be dealt with using our heuristic are also discussed.Computational results for the solution (to proven optimality) of publicly available test problems involving up to 150 countries are reported. The largest problem solved previously in the literature to proven optimality involved only 22 countries.  相似文献

This study analyzes the behavior of top managers in managing their firms' business portfolios. A review of the existing literature provides a conceptual framework for a research design combining quantitative and qualitative techniques. Data were collected through interviews with 35 top managers of well-known German business firms and the findings of this study translated into guidelines for managers. The results suggest that successful top managers should be concerned with the social relationships and management processes within the corporate office, as well as with their use of management concepts in managing the business portfolio.  相似文献

Cambridge high-technology companies, like other small businesses, do not for the most part have explicit overall business strategies, but a number of their key policies are quite clear-cut. For example: they all aim to sell highly specialized products in profitable market niches; the newer electronics firms minimize their commitment to manufacturing by buying-in components for assembly and testing; nearly all the firms want to make the minimum use of outside capital so as to maintain their independence. This article is based on a research study, the object of which is to illustrate the major components of global planning in the context of modern administration. Data were collected from a representative sample of multinational companies, both U.S. and non-U.S. based. The planning process in the companies surveyed followed a pattern based on formal planning systems. The author concludes that multinational corporate planning will in future become a blend of administrative and institutional types of plans.  相似文献

The World Wide Web offers tremendous opportunities to high growth SMEs, but successive research studies have shown that significant business benefits are not being realised. This paper reports the results of the first comprehensive study into web adoption and usage by SMEs in Northern Ireland. It confirms broader research into SME adoption and usage of the World Wide Web and suggests that, if SMEs are to realise the full potential of the Web, they must think globally, act strategically and learn from competitors.  相似文献
