Solomon Mikhoels: Actor,Director, Critic

Editor's Note: Solomon Mikhailovich Mikhoels was an outstanding member of the Moscow State Jewish Theater, actor, director, producer and guiding spirit of the group. His characterizations of King Lear and Tevye the Milkman of Sholom Aleichem fame are considered classics and earned him the title of People's Artist of the USSR. Later he also received the Order of Lenin and in 1946 the Stalin Prize.     

Astrology: Science,Pseudoscience, Ideology?

A half century of intensive educational propaganda has finally had its fitting effect: astrological notions are being assimilated these days in our country with striking ease and moreover above all by educated, so to speak enlightened, people. It has become good tone to listen on every occasion to the forecasts of fashionable astrologers, to interview them, and to print computer horoscopes. The traditional skepticism of our scientists barely suffices them to keep their own scientific view of the world intact. But if any understanding is to be achieved about the phenomenon of the present-day astrological renaissance, it can only be done in connection with science. For over two thousand years, astrology has endeavored to become a respectable science, and for this reason alone, any analytical approach to astrological material must, in any event initially, regard this material as scientific.     

Hacks, Flacks, and Counter-Attacks: Cigarette Advertising, Sponsored Research, andControversies

The tobacco industry promotes friendly "experts" and uses public relations tactics to produce uncertainty around research results that threaten it. This inhibits public policies responsive to these research findings. These tactics, long used against medical science, are now being used to counter the studies challenging to the myth that cigarette advertising is of no import. The numerous weaknesses of the industry-advanced argument are discussed, drawing particularly on the literature of consumer behavior, marketing, and advertising. The vast preponderance of evidence indicates that cigarette advertising plays a meaningful role in influencing the perceptions, attitudes, and smoking behavior of youth. Denials of these effects, without brand new and compelling evidence, are highly suspect.     

Fertility control: values,beliefs, and behaviors

The author hypothesizes that any group that is isolated from participation in social, economic, and political affairs is likely to be characterized by a high degree of apathy, fatalism and hopelessness. Even more deleterious to understanding "out groups" is the fairly widespread habit of judging a minority group by the actions of a minority of the minority. Certain vital statistics of the white and the Negro races are discussed. (These include income, education, illegitimacy, etc.). The author contends that one of the unfortunate aspects of many studies dealing with the communication between the husband and the wife, is the fact that personal characteristics are emphasized rather than an understanding of the social situation in which the poor live.
