This is a survey of characterizations of discrete distributions via properties of record values. Characterization results based on records and weak records are presented. Then the concepts of kth records, strong kth records, and weak kth records are recalled. Finally, characterizations of the geometric parent involving these three types of kth records are discussed.  相似文献

Let X U (1) < X U (2) < … < X U ( n ) < … be the sequence of the upper record values from a population with common distribution function F. In this paper, we first give a theorem to characterize the generalized mixtures of geometric distribution by the relation between E[(X U ( n +1)X U ( n ))2|X U ( n ) = x] and the function of the failure rate of the distribution, for any positive integer n. Secondly, we also use the same relation to characterize the generalized mixtures of exponential distribution. The characterizing relations were motivated by the work of Balakrishnan and Balasubramanian (1995). Received: March 31, 1999; revised version: November 22, 1999  相似文献

Let X 1, X 2,... be iid random variables (rv's) with the support on nonnegative integers and let (W n , n≥0) denote the corresponding sequence of weak record values. We obtain new characterization of geometric and some other discrete distributions based on different forms of partial independence of rv's W n and W n+r —W n for some fixed n≥0 and r≥1. We also prove that rv's W 0 and W n+1 —W n have identical distribution if and only if (iff) the underlying distribution is geometric.  相似文献

r -th record values subject to (r + 1)-th record values, record mean function, from a distribution of discrete type. We give some properties of the record mean function and an explicit expression for the distribution function based on its record mean function, which allows us to characterize particular discrete distributions using the record mean functions. Let Rj be the jth upper record value from an infinite sequence of independent identically distributed positive integer valued random variables. We show that their common distribution must have geometric tail if Rj+k?Rj and Rj are partially independent for some j≥1 and k≥1 or if E(Rj+2?Rj+1| Rj) is a constant. Three versions of partial independence, each of which provides a characterization of the geometric tail are presented.  相似文献

In order to avoid wrong conclusions in any further analysis, it is of importance to conduct a formal comparison for characteristic quantities of the distributions. These characteristic quantities we are familiar with include mean, quantity and reliability function, and so on. In this paper, we consider two tests aiming at the comparisons for function of parameters in Pareto distribution based on record values. They are generalized p-value-based test and parametric bootstrap-based test, respectively. The resulting procedures are easy to compute and are applicable to small samples. A simulation study is conducted to investigate and compare the performance of the proposed tests. A phenomenon we note is that generalized p-value-based test almost uniformly outperforms the parametric bootstrap-based test.  相似文献

Consider a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables {Xi,i?1}{Xi,i?1} with a common absolutely continuous distribution function F  . Let X1:n?X2:n???Xn:nX1:n?X2:n???Xn:n be the order statistics of {X1,X2,…,Xn}{X1,X2,,Xn} and {Yl,l?1}{Yl,l?1} be the sequence of record values generated by {Xi,i?1}{Xi,i?1}. In this work, the conditional distribution of YlYl given Xn:nXn:n is established. Some characterizations of F   based on record values and Xn:nXn:n are then given.  相似文献

Finite mixtures of distributions have been getting increasing use in the applied literature. In the continuous case, linear combinations of exponentials and gammas have been shown to be well suited for modeling purposes. In the discrete case, the focus has primarily been on continuous mixing, usually of Poisson distributions and typically using gammas to describe the random parameter, But many of these applications are forced, especially when a continuous mixing distribution is used. Instead, it is often prefe-rable to try finite mixtures of geometries or negative binomials, since these are the fundamental building blocks of all discrete random variables. To date, a major stumbling block to their use has been the lack of easy routines for estimating the parameters of such models. This problem has now been alleviated by the adaptation to the discrete case of numerical procedures recently developed for exponential, Weibull, and gamma mixtures. The new methods have been applied to four previously studied data sets, and significant improvements reported in goodness-of-fit, with resultant implications for each affected study.  相似文献

Confidence intervals are developed for the mode of a discrete unimodal distribution in the case where only a single observation is available. These intervals are centered on either the observation, X, or a weighted average of X with a constant, b, chosen by the investigator. Intervals are derived for nonrestricted unimodal distributions, for unimodal distributions with a symmetry property, and for a family of two-sided truncated geometric distributions.  相似文献

We consider the problem of the unique identification of discrete probability distributions by the single regression function of non-adjacent discrete weak record values. We present a new approach to this problem and we show that the uniqueness of the characterization is equivalent to the uniqueness of solution to a corresponding difference equation or an appropriate system of difference equations. This result is applied to obtain known as well as new characterizations of discrete distributions.  相似文献

The modified Weibull distribution can be used quite effectively to model complex data from mechanical engineering or survival analysis studies that posses a monotonic or a bathtub-shape hazard rate. In this paper, we study the MLEs of the parameters of a modified Weibull distribution model in the presence of upper kth record values. The existence and uniqueness of the MLEs are proven in this case. Real data analysis is performed for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

Some statistical data are most easily accessed in terms of record values. Examples include meteorology, hydrology and athletic events. Also, there are a number of industrial situations where experimental outcomes are a sequence of record-breaking observations. In this paper, Bayesian estimation for the two parameters of some life distributions, including Exponential, Weibull, Pareto and Burr type XII, are obtained based on upper record values. Prediction, either point or interval, for future upper record values is also presented from a Bayesian view point. Some of the non-Bayesian results can be achieved as limiting cases from our results. Numerical computations are given to illustrate the results.  相似文献

We propose a new class of distributions called the exponentiated G geometric family motivated mainly by lifetime issues which can generate several lifetime models discussed in the literature. Some mathematical properties of the new family including asymptotes and shapes, moments, quantile and generating functions, extreme values and order statistics are fully investigated. We propose the log-exponentiated Weibull geometric and log-exponentiated log-logistic geometric regression models to cope with censored data. The model parameters are estimated by maximum likelihood. Three examples with real data expose quite well the new family.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider characterizations of geometric distribution based on some properties of progressively Type-II right-censored order statistics. Specifically, we establish characterizations through conditional expectation, identical distribution, and independence of functions of progressively Type-II right-censored order statistics. Moreover, extensions of these results to generalized order statistics are also sketched. These generalize the corresponding results known for the case of ordinary order statistics.  相似文献

We describe a method of determining upper bounds on the variances of linear combinations of the kth records values from i.i.d. sequences, expressed in terms of variances of parent distributions. We also present conditions for which the bounds are sharp, and those for which the respective lower ones are equal to zero. A special attention is paid to the case of the kth record spacings, i.e. the differences of consecutive kth record values.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that both the class of beta-generated distributions GF and its base distribution F belong to the same domain of maximal (or minimal or upper record value or lower record value) attraction. Moreover, it is shown that the weak convergence of any non-extreme order statistic (central or intermediate order statistic), based on a base distribution F, to a non-degenerate limit type implies the weak convergence of GF to a non-degenerate limit type. The relations between the two limit types are deduced.  相似文献
