This article studies the problem of model identification and estimation for stable autoregressive process observed in a symmetric stable noise environment. A new tool called partial auto-covariation function is introduced to identify the stable autoregressive signals. The signal and noise parameters are estimated using a modified version of Generalized Yule Walker type method and the method of moments. The proposed methods are illustrated through data simulated from autoregressive signals with symmetric stable innovations. The new technique is applied to analyze the time series of sea surface temperature anomaly and compared with its Gaussian counterpart.  相似文献

We propose data generating structures which can be represented as the nonlinear autoregressive models with single and finite mixtures of scale mixtures of skew normal innovations. This class of models covers symmetric/asymmetric and light/heavy-tailed distributions, so provide a useful generalization of the symmetrical nonlinear autoregressive models. As semiparametric and nonparametric curve estimation are the approaches for exploring the structure of a nonlinear time series data set, in this article the semiparametric estimator for estimating the nonlinear function of the model is investigated based on the conditional least square method and nonparametric kernel approach. Also, an Expectation–Maximization-type algorithm to perform the maximum likelihood (ML) inference of unknown parameters of the model is proposed. Furthermore, some strong and weak consistency of the semiparametric estimator in this class of models are presented. Finally, to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed model, some simulation studies and an application to real data set are considered.  相似文献

Periodic autoregressive (PAR) models with symmetric innovations are widely used on time series analysis, whereas its asymmetric counterpart inference remains a challenge, because of a number of problems related to the existing computational methods. In this paper, we use an interesting relationship between periodic autoregressive and vector autoregressive (VAR) models to study maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches to the inference of a PAR model with normal and skew-normal innovations, where different kinds of estimation methods for the unknown parameters are examined. Several technical difficulties which are usually complicated to handle are reported. Results are compared with the existing classical solutions and the practical implementations of the proposed algorithms are illustrated via comprehensive simulation studies. The methods developed in the study are applied and illustrate a real-time series. The Bayes factor is also used to compare the multivariate normal model versus the multivariate skew-normal model.  相似文献

In this article, we first propose the modified Hannan–Rissanen Method for estimating the parameters of autoregressive moving average (ARMA) process with symmetric stable noise and symmetric stable generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) noise. Next, we propose the modified empirical characteristic function method for the estimation of GARCH parameters with symmetric stable noise. Further, we show the efficiency, accuracy and simplicity of our methods with Monte-Carlo simulation. Finally, we apply our proposed methods to model the financial data.  相似文献

This paper describes an estimating function approach for parameter estimation in linear and nonlinear times series models with infinite variance stable errors. Joint estimates of location and scale parameters are derived for classes of autoregressive (AR) models and random coefficient autoregressive (RCA) models with stable errors, as well as for AR models with stable autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic (ARCH) errors. Fast, on-line, recursive parametric estimation for the location parameter based on estimating functions is discussed using simulation studies. A real financial time series is also discussed in some detail.  相似文献

Multivariate (or interchangeably multichannel) autoregressive (MCAR) modeling of stationary and nonstationary time series data is achieved doing things one channel at-a-time using only scalar computations on instantaneous data. The one channel at-a-time modeling is achieved as an instantaneous response multichannel autoregressive model with orthogonal innovations variance. Conventional MCAR models are expressible as linear algebraic transformations of the instantaneous response orthogonal innovations models. By modeling multichannel time series one channel at-a-time, the problems of modeling multichannel time series are reduced to problems in the modeling of scalar autoregressive time series. The three longstanding time series modeling problems of achieving a relatively parsimonious MCAR representation, of multichannel stationary time series spectral estimation and of the modeling of nonstationary covariance time series are addressed using this paradigm.  相似文献

Estimation in conditional first order autoregression with discrete support   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We consider estimation in the class of first order conditional linear autoregressive models with discrete support that are routinely used to model time series of counts. Various groups of estimators proposed in the literature are discussed: moment-based estimators; regression-based estimators; and likelihood-based estimators. Some of these have been used previously and others not. In particular, we address the performance of new types of generalized method of moments estimators and propose an exact maximum likelihood procedure valid for a Poisson marginal model using backcasting. The small sample properties of all estimators are comprehensively analyzed using simulation. Three situations are considered using data generated with: a fixed autoregressive parameter and equidispersed Poisson innovations; negative binomial innovations; and, additionally, a random autoregressive coefficient. The first set of experiments indicates that bias correction methods, not hitherto used in this context to our knowledge, are some-times needed and that likelihood-based estimators, as might be expected, perform well. The second two scenarios are representative of overdispersion. Methods designed specifically for the Poisson context now perform uniformly badly, but simple, bias-corrected, Yule-Walker and least squares estimators perform well in all cases.  相似文献

This paper shows how nonparametric likelihood inference for autoregressive models can be based on the family of “empirical” Cressie–Read statistics. The results of the paper apply to possibly nonstationary autoregressive models with innovations that form a martingale difference sequence, and can accommodate multiple and complex unit roots, as well as deterministic components. As an application, the paper considers nonparametric likelihood-based tests for seasonal unit roots and for double unit roots. Monte Carlo evidence seems to suggest that the proposed tests have competitive finite sample properties.  相似文献

The class of generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (GARCH) models can be used to describe the volatility with less parameters than autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (ARCH)-type models, their distributions are heavy-tailed, with time-dependent conditional variance, and are able to model clustering of volatility. Despite all these facts, the way that GARCH models are built imposes limits on the heaviness of the tails of their unconditional distribution. The class of randomized generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic (R-GARCH) models includes the ARCH and GARCH models allowing the use of stable innovations. Estimation methods and empirical analysis of R-GARCH models are the focus of this work. We present the indirect inference method to estimate the R-GARCH models, some simulations and an empirical application.  相似文献

In this paper, we reconsider the mixture vector autoregressive model, which was proposed in the literature for modelling non‐linear time series. We complete and extend the stationarity conditions, derive a matrix formula in closed form for the autocovariance function of the process and prove a result on stable vector autoregressive moving‐average representations of mixture vector autoregressive models. For these results, we apply techniques related to a Markovian representation of vector autoregressive moving‐average processes. Furthermore, we analyse maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters by using the expectation–maximization algorithm and propose a new iterative algorithm for getting the maximum likelihood estimates. Finally, we study the model selection problem and testing procedures. Several examples, simulation experiments and an empirical application based on monthly financial returns illustrate the proposed procedures.  相似文献

By taking into account the thick-tail property of the errors, cointegration analysis in vector error-correction models with infinite-variance stable errors is a natural generalization of cointegration analysis in error-correction models with normally distributed errors. We study the Johansen test for cointegrated systems under symmetric stable innovations with discrete spectral measures. The results show that the distributions of the Johansen test statistics under these innovations involve nuisance parameters. To overcome the problem of nuisance parameters, we implement a nonparametric subsampling procedure. We document some subsampling simulation results and demonstrate in an empirical example how the test can be used in practice.  相似文献

Summary.  We develop a new class of time continuous autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average (CARFIMA) models which are useful for modelling regularly spaced and irregu-larly spaced discrete time long memory data. We derive the autocovariance function of a stationary CARFIMA model and study maximum likelihood estimation of a regression model with CARFIMA errors, based on discrete time data and via the innovations algorithm. It is shown that the maximum likelihood estimator is asymptotically normal, and its finite sample properties are studied through simulation. The efficacy of the approach proposed is demonstrated with a data set from an environmental study.  相似文献

This paper develops Bayesian inference of extreme value models with a flexible time-dependent latent structure. The generalized extreme value distribution is utilized to incorporate state variables that follow an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) process with Gumbel-distributed innovations. The time-dependent extreme value distribution is combined with heavy-tailed error terms. An efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is proposed using a state-space representation with a finite mixture of normal distributions to approximate the Gumbel distribution. The methodology is illustrated by simulated data and two different sets of real data. Monthly minima of daily returns of stock price index, and monthly maxima of hourly electricity demand are fit to the proposed model and used for model comparison. Estimation results show the usefulness of the proposed model and methodology, and provide evidence that the latent autoregressive process and heavy-tailed errors play an important role to describe the monthly series of minimum stock returns and maximum electricity demand.  相似文献

A multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model with dynamic conditional correlations is proposed, in which the individual conditional volatilities follow exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity models and the standardized innovations follow a mixture of Gaussian distributions. Inference on the model parameters and prediction of future volatilities are addressed by both maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation methods. Estimation of the Value at Risk of a given portfolio and selection of optimal portfolios under the proposed specification are addressed. The good performance of the proposed methodology is illustrated via Monte Carlo experiments and the analysis of the daily closing prices of the Dow Jones and NASDAQ indexes.  相似文献

Three linear prediction methods of a single missing value for a stationary first order multiplicative spatial autoregressive model are proposed based on the quarter observations, observations in the first neighborhood, and observations in the nearest neighborhood. Three different types of innovations including Gaussian (symmetric and thin tailed), exponential (skew to right), and asymmetric Laplace (skew and heavy tailed) are considered. In each case, the proposed predictors are compared based on the two well-known criteria: mean square prediction and Pitman's measure of closeness. We study semiparametric time series models with innovations following a log‐concave distribution. We propose a general maximum likelihood framework that allows us to estimate simultaneously the parameters of the model and the density of the innovations. This framework can be easily adapted to many well‐known models, including autoregressive moving average (ARMA), generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic (GARCH), and ARMA‐GARCH models. Furthermore, we show that the estimator under our new framework is consistent in both ARMA and ARMA‐GARCH settings. We demonstrate its finite sample performance via a thorough simulation study and apply it to model the daily log‐return of the FTSE 100 index.  相似文献

We construct an integer-valued stationary symmetric AR(1) process which can have either a positive or a negative lag-one autocorrelation. Nearly all integer-valued time series models are designed for observations which are non-negative integers or counts. They have innovations which are distributed on the non-negative integers and therefore obviously non-symmetric. We build our model using innovations that come from the difference of two independent identically distributed Poisson random variables. These innovations have a symmetric distribution, which has many advantages; in particular, they will allow us to model negative correlations. For our AR(1) process, we examine its basic properties and consider estimation via conditional least squares.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Seasonal autoregressive (SAR) models have been modified and extended to model high frequency time series characterized by exhibiting double seasonal patterns. Some researchers have introduced Bayesian inference for double seasonal autoregressive (DSAR) models; however, none has tackled the problem of Bayesian identification of DSAR models. Therefore, in order to fill this gap, we present a Bayesian methodology to identify the order of DSAR models. Assuming the model errors are normally distributed and using three priors, i.e. natural conjugate, g, and Jeffreys’ priors, on the model parameters, we derive the joint posterior mass function of the model order in a closed-form. Accordingly, the posterior mass function can be investigated and the best order of DSAR model is chosen as a value with the highest posterior probability for the time series being analyzed. We evaluate the proposed Bayesian methodology using simulation study, and we then apply it to real-world hourly internet amount of traffic dataset.  相似文献

This article proposes a dynamic framework for modeling and forecasting of realized covariance matrices using vine copulas to allow for more flexible dependencies between assets. Our model automatically guarantees positive definiteness of the forecast through the use of a Cholesky decomposition of the realized covariance matrix. We explicitly account for long-memory behavior by using fractionally integrated autoregressive moving average (ARFIMA) and heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) models for the individual elements of the decomposition. Furthermore, our model incorporates non-Gaussian innovations and GARCH effects, accounting for volatility clustering and unconditional kurtosis. The dependence structure between assets is studied using vine copula constructions, which allow for nonlinearity and asymmetry without suffering from an inflexible tail behavior or symmetry restrictions as in conventional multivariate models. Further, the copulas have a direct impact on the point forecasts of the realized covariances matrices, due to being computed as a nonlinear transformation of the forecasts for the Cholesky matrix. Beside studying in-sample properties, we assess the usefulness of our method in a one-day-ahead forecasting framework, comparing recent types of models for the realized covariance matrix based on a model confidence set approach. Additionally, we find that in Value-at-Risk (VaR) forecasting, vine models require less capital requirements due to smoother and more accurate forecasts.  相似文献

Abstract. General autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models extend the traditional ARMA models by removing the assumptions of causality and invertibility. The assumptions are not required under a non‐Gaussian setting for the identifiability of the model parameters in contrast to the Gaussian setting. We study M‐estimation for general ARMA processes with infinite variance, where the distribution of innovations is in the domain of attraction of a non‐Gaussian stable law. Following the approach taken by Davis et al. (1992) and Davis (1996) , we derive a functional limit theorem for random processes based on the objective function, and establish asymptotic properties of the M‐estimator. We also consider bootstrapping the M‐estimator and extend the results of Davis & Wu (1997) to the present setting so that statistical inferences are readily implemented. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of the M‐estimation and bootstrap procedures. An empirical example of financial time series is also provided.  相似文献
