LAST September, Chai Ran, my classmate and roommate in Shanxi, and I took a train to Yuanping to visit our second home. Twenty-five years ago, we 31 students from Beijing went to live in the Xiadalin Village in Yuanping, Shanxi Province, where we lived and labored for seven years. In our railway car, Chai told me that Yuanping, to which the Xiadalin Village belonged in the past administration, was celebrating its emergence as a city. Chai had married a villager and had returned to Beijing only two years ago. Her son and daughter, who were both born in the village, had just visited there and had brought her the news. International Women's Day Party Well Received庆"三八"中外妇女招待会受欢迎It was a warm spring day on March 6,2007.On that afternoon,1,500 Chinese and foreign guests gathered in the Great Hall of the People, in Beijing,to celebrate the 97th anniversary of International Women's Day,which was on March 8.The event was organized by the All-China Women's Federation(ACWF).     

Women's Art and Women Artists in Cultural Change

ON March 3rd, 1998, an exhibition titled "Century · Women" drew up its curtain at the China Arts Gallery in Beijing, and attracted a vast number of visitors with its large scale, historical overview, and representation of a great number of painters with various styles. While people strolled in the gallery, a lively forum on the topic of "Visual Angle of Gender: Women's Arts and Women Artists in Cultural Change" was also taking place in Beijing. The purpose of the forum was to corroborate the academic value of the exhibition, as well as to analyze the cultural significance of women's art through the exploration of the history and present situation of Chinese women's art, Over 30 scholars and artists presented speeches on the topic; the audience numbered in the hundreds.

THE tickets were already sold out when I learned that the British Royal Theater was staging Othello—one of the four great Shakespearean tragedies—in early March in Beijing. A friend of mine kindly offered his ticket to me. He said he didn't understand English, and that his daughter was going to perform in a play on that same night on the same stage with the famous star Xia Yu. COUPLES invited to participate in the '96 Beijing Golden Wedding Anniversary for the World's People's Tour stayed in the Shangri-La Hotel in western Beijing. The large contingent included Chen Dong and his wife Zhang Shujie. Looking Towards the 1995 World Women's Conference——the second international seminar on women's studies

Women's development is a process. It is also a process to await the Fourth World Conference on Women to be held in Beijing in 1995, a process to further mobilize women from various countries to gain equality between the sexes and to take a part in social development. The second international seminar on women's studies was held from November 23 to 26, 1993, at Beijing University in preparation for this day. Some 100 women researchers from Australia, Bangladesh', Canada, the United States, England, Malaysia and Japan, as well as Hong Kong and China participated in the event. It was one of the most lively and active seminars held during this process. To take prompt action in development was a common nderstanding of the participants.

FOUR years ago, Hu Ping, then the Minister of Commerce, was doing an investigation in Hubei Province in central China. This busy minister took the opportunity to stroll through the market and buy himself a pair of brown mesh oxhide shoes which he put on immediately. Pasta, Shanxi Style Hand-pulled Noodles Loved by Tourists and Residents Alike

I had my most delicious meal with noodles in a small village along the Yellow River. It was on a March day a decade ago, when I had just moved to Shanxi Province. I was out in the field as a reporter, and was exhausted and starving after traveling more than 50 kilometers on foot and by bus. A middle-aged man, whom I did not know, was standing in front of his dugout cave, the traditional dwelling of the Shanxi people." He called to me and invited me to have a meal in his home. Upon entering the cave, I was asked to sit on a kang, a brick bed, while the man's wife busied herself with cooking my meal. In no time a huge bowl of youpomian, noodles with Chinese prickly ash oil, was on the table in front of me. My nostrils were immediately filled with the strong and delicious smell of chili and prickly ash.

1 Coring Seedlings' Project Launched“护苗工程”呵护亿万儿童A "Caring Seedlings" Project was launched in March in Beijing by the All-China Women's Federation to promote Chinese children's comprehensive de-velopment. The program focuses on nutrition, physical strength, psychological health and intellectual power. The China Children's Center was responsible for organizing and implementing the project.

It is my pleasure to be here in Hong Kong at the Beijing ＋ 15 Forum of Status of Women amid the elegance and charm of China＇s Pearl of the Orient, and to have the opportunity to meet and discuss with the women of Hong Kong their good works. As this year marks the 15th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, it is an apt date indeed for the Hong Kong Federation of Women to hold this forum. One hundred years ago, the Second International Socialist Women＇s Conference designated March 8 International Women＇s Day. Since then, March 8 has been a festival for women around the world.

Athens Olympic Torch Relays in Beijing雅典奥运圣火在北京传递The Olympic flame cast its glow in Beijing for the first time on June 9 as a high-profile torch relay for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games was held in the Chinese capital.The olive-leaf-shaped torch was lit at 9:16 a.m. (0116 GMT) at the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People by Tian'anmen Square in downtown Beijing. Then it was passed from one bearer to the next on a specially marked route that passed through the city's most famous landmarks including the Heaven of Temple and the Forbidden City.A total of 148 torchbearers, aged 14 to 73, took part in the relay. The list of torchbearers was a who's who of Chinese sport, and also involved people from all walks of life.
