Summary Responses to nymphal density in the determination of wing form were compared between the offspring from brachypter x brachypter crosses and those from macropter x macropter crosses of the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus. In the offspring from crosses between macropters, there was a strong tendency for macropters to increase to a rather high level with increasing nymphal density in both sexes. In contrast to this, in the offspring from crosses between brachypters, the appearance rate of macropters attained a maximum value in moderately crowded conditions and conversely decreased to a lower level in more crowded conditions in both sexes. Thus density response patterns concerning the determination of wing form were quite different between the offspring from different crosses in the wing form, indicating that there is a genetic basis underlying wing polymorphism in this species. As for the body size of emerged adults, macropters tended to be larger than brachypters in the same crowded condition. Moreover, the rate of decrease of body size with nymphal density was lower in the offspring from crosses between macropters than in the offspring from crosses between brachypters. This indicated that the former offspring are more tolerant of nymphal crowding than the latter. The difference in such a tolerance against nymphal crowding between the offspring from different crosses was considered to be related to the difference in the appearance of macropters in the crowded conditions between them.  相似文献

Summary Reproduction and egg diapause of the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus, in the subtropical winter season were investigated in relation to its wing polymorphism. Macropterous females collected from the southern part of Okinawa Is. in the autumn season delayed their oviposition and were less fecund early in the adult life period, but survived much longer than brachypterous females collected from the same locality. The total fecundity was not significantly different between wing morphs. The diapause of eggs laid by brachypters tended to be terminated more easily at a high temperature than that of eggs laid by macropters. This indicated that the eggs laid by macropters were more intense in their diapause than those laid by brachypters. However, irrespective of the parental wing form, diapause showed considerable variation in its intensity within and between clutches.  相似文献

Summary Reproductive properties of the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus, were investigated for three types of female adults: brachypters produced in both high and low density populations and macropters produced in high density populations. With respect to egg-laying potential in terms of clutch size, clutch number, and total fecundity, macropters were superior to brachypters produced in the same high density population, although inferior to brachypters produced in the low density population. The mean fecundity of female adults in each type was positively correlated with mean body length. Macropterous females markedly prolonged their initiation of both copulation and oviposition and had a much longer life span compared with both types of brachypters. However, there was no fundamental difference in reproductive schedules between the two types of brachypters.  相似文献

Summary Genetic correlations of the wing form and the relative wing length between females and males were estimated in the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus, by calculating the correlation between the sexes of the proportion macropterous or the mean relative wing length in full-sib families obtained from different wing forms of parents emerged in a high density population. There was a significantly positive genetic correlation between the sexes in both the proportion macropterous and the mean relative wing length. However, the appearance rate of macropters tended to be much lower in males than in females under the rearing conditions which promote the appearance of macropters. This was evident especially in the offspring of brachypterous parents. These indicated that inC. saccharivorus the wing polymorphism of males is not a simple result of the genetic correlation of wing morphology between the two sexes. It was considered that both of the female and male fitness advantages to wing reduction, as well as the genetic correlation between the sexes, would influence the evolution of wing polymorphism in this species.  相似文献

Summary A male fitness advantage to wing reduction was investigated for the oriental chinch bug,Cavelerius saccharivorus, which is wing dimorphic. Field surveys for the frequency of matings between wing morphs showed that the mating probability was much higher in brachypterous males than in macropterous males in the early breeding season. Brachypterous males copulated with not only brachypterous females but also macropterous females in this season. This led to a considerable rate (30%) of insemination of macropterous females just before emigration even in the early breeding season. A rearing experiment for the pre-reproductive period of females revealed that females mated with brachypterous males copulated and oviposited earlier than females mated with macropterous males. These results indicate that there is a fitness advantage to wing reduction in the males ofC. saccharivorus in terms of the earlier sexual maturation.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of sugarcane bugs,Cavelerius saccharivorus is remarkably patchy at time of the peak emergence of the first generation adult in early summer. In population near carrying capacity 70% of adults become macropterous, and they move to sparse populations or vacuum areas. The experiment on the reproductive difference between females from field populations with different densities, showed that the overcrowding restricted their oviposition. On the further experiment it was shown that reproductive ability of macropterous adults or dispersers was not much inferior to that of brachypterous from sparse populations. Overcrowding at time of the peak emergence is reduced by the dispersal. Hence the intraspecific competition is a transient condition. The oviposition is at first restricted in residents of dense populations as compared with brachypterous adults of sparse populations, but the difference becomes small as the former density decreases by the emigration. The last section considers the relation of the reproductive rate and dispersal risk to the rate of dispersal with the simple model, which explains the characteristic dispersal of this species.  相似文献

Summary Two adjacent stations (H and L) were set up to study movement ofC. saccharivorus adults in sugarcane fields. At the beginning of the study the density ofC. saccharivorus including all stages of development was quite different between the two. The density of the first generation adult on Station H was about 5 times that on Station L. The number ofC. saccharivorus on both the stations became almost the same one month after the beginning of the study. At the beginning of the study macropterous adults were more numerous in Station H than in Station L. However percentage of macropterous adults on Station L increased after one month whereas that on Station H declined. About 2,000 marked adults were released on each station during the early period of the emergence of the first generation adult. Marked insects were recaptured on both the stations one month after the release. The adults released on the dense population (H) tended to disperse more actively than those on the scarce population (L). Marked macropterous adults moved more actively than brachypterous ones. The density related dispersal of adults was considered to be an important factor to regulate the population density.  相似文献

Summary The mechanism of the genetic control of wing form determination of the small brown planthopperLaodelphax striatellus was analyzed by selection and crossing experiments. The selection experiment for brachypterous and macropterous forms for 13 generations showed that the wing form is under some genetic control. The crossing experiment showed that the wing form polymorphism was not a simple Mendelian character but was under polygenic control. The data from the crossing experiment were applied to the liability method for the quantitative genetics by Falconer (1981). The analysis suggested that wing form determination was a threshold character under polygenic control, and the estimated minimum number of loci concerned was 2.07. The realized heritability estimated from the data of selection experiment was 0.36 for macroptery. On the other hand, the heritability in broad sense estimated on the basis of the variance of F1 and F2 in crossing experiment was 0.81.  相似文献

Functional alary polymorphisms have been studied rather extensively in several insect species. This review article deals with factors controlling wing polymorphism in a flightless species,Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.), and discusses its adaptive significance and mechanisms for their persistence under natural conditions. The macropterous morph is determined by a recessive allele whose penetrance depends on photoperiod and temperature. Natural populations of this species contain a small fraction of flightless macropters. The disadvantages of being a macropter (increase of development time, decrease of fecundity) are minimal, while the benefit may consist in the tendency to prereproductive arrest of ovarian development in teneral females. It prevents establishing a second generation which would mostly die during the next winter. The mechanism of alary morph regulation may be an ancestral trait linkingP. apterus with other polymorphic Heteroptera, while its decreased penetrance may be a derivative character. Variation in fitness due to alary morphs is small compared to the one associated with differences in body size. The latter is environmentally determined, and not linked to the genetic basis of wing polymorphism. In the “mosaic” of phenotypes of various size the significance of the genetic macroptery may be close to neutral.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal changes in the percentage of macropterous individuals in natural population ofMicrovelia douglasi in permanent habitats were investigated in Shimane, western part of Japan. Macropterous forms of 5th instar nymphs occurred most frequently from late June to early July. However, the seasonal appearance of macropterous adults differed between habitats and years. There were significant effects of density, temperature, photoperiod and food availability on the percentage of macropters under laboratory conditions. The percentage of macropterous forms generally increased with density, but the mode of the response was modified by temperature, photoperiod and food availability. When insects were reared under long day photperiod (16L8D) with abundant food (0.5–1.0 g/container/day), the percentage of macroptery varied most among the different density treatments at the intermediate temperature (24°C) and the difference was reduced at higher temperature (28° and 32°C). Effects of temperature were small under the short day photoperiod (12L12D). Under 12L12D photoperiod sensitivity of density responses were higher at 32°C and lower at 24°C than those under 15L8D photoperiod. When the insects were supplied with food every other day, the density response became obscure. Ecological significance of environmental responses in the wing morph determination was discussed in relation to the heterogeneous environment of water surface.  相似文献

A population census was conducted to describe the effects of the growth stage of rice on the population dynamics ofS. furcifera, in particular, on immigration, seasonal abundance, population growth rate, and wing-form expression. The number of immigrants was highest on rice plants 17 to 30 days after transplanting (DAT), which suggested that immigrants prefer to settle or remain more on rice plants at the tillering stage (approximately 20–30 DAT). Population growth rate from immigration to the 1st generation decreased with an increase in rice plant age. In contrast, population growth rate from the 1st to 2nd generation was not influenced by rice plant age and was negatively density-dependent. The percentage of macropters (flyers) was positively related to the growth stage of rice when rice was in the vegetative or early part of the reproductive stage, and reached 100% at about 10 days before heading (booting stage). Threafter, most adult females molted into macropters regardless of population density. The roles of host plant age and crowding effect on the population dynamics ofS. furcifera are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The change in population density ofCavelerius saccharivorus was studied in the sugar cane field and theMiscanthus habitats around it. This species spent 2 (or partly 3) generations a year. It was suggested that the density rose in the sugar cane field where the density had been low enough, when the population density increased in the nearby sugar cane fields. Likely, the density in theMiscanthus habitat increased with the density in the nearby sugar cane field. It seems that these are mainly due to flying movement of adults, and that the movement takes place in every season. It was found through the investigation in the sugar cane field that the percentage of long-winged adults increased with the population density. These adults seemed to emmigrate to the nearby sugar cane fields andMiscanthus habitats. The remarkable increase in the percentage of long-winged adults in the sugar cane field was probably due to the immigration into there. In theMiscanthus habitat the adult population was consisted mainly of long-winged ones. Through all the observations, it was suggested that the adult movement was associated with the population regulation and performed chiefly by long-winged adults.  相似文献

Summary Field studies were conducted to clarify whether variation in food availability among habitats influences population density, and whether population density has a negative effect on foraging success in the orb-web spider,Nephila clavata. Lifetime food consumption per individual (i.e., foraging success) strongly correlated with mean body size of adult females and mean fecundity in populations. Also, there was a positive correlation between foraging success and population density. Since foraging success reflected potential prey availability in the habitat, food resource appeared to be a limiting factor for populations in this spider. Mean fecundity per individual correlated with population density of the following year, suggesting that decreased reproduction is a major component of food limitation on population density. Consistent defferences in mean body size between particular sites were observed over years, while such difference was less obvious in density. Thus, ranking of food abundance among habitats seems to be predictable between years. A field experiment revealed that an artificial increase in population density had no negative effect on the feeding rate of individuals, suggesting that intraspecific competition for food is not important in this species.  相似文献

The age structure of the workers in an old-established industry, and the problems which might arise from it, formed the subject of the investigation. It was found that the group was atypical in that, in addition to having a higher average age than that of the total working population of Scotland, the age distribution was bimodal, with a marked excess in the S o + and a marked deficiency in the 3 5-44 age group. The bimodality was due to high recruitment after the first world war, followed by a low one a few years later. The bimodality was especially marked among footplatemen.

On the basis of age structure it is very difficult to identify grades to which older workers might be transferred. Certain receiving grades which " accommodate " the less healthy (and potentially also the older workers) were found to be relatively small in size compared with the operating grades, footplatemen or signalmen.

Projections were made to explore some of the repercussions of converting the age structure of a bimodal distribution to a standard, the working population of Scotland. There were three assumptions on total size : maintaining the size, a slow fall to 70% and a rapid fall to 70%. Within each of these there were three assumptions on sickness absence, drawn from experience of Scottish railwaymen and particularly footplatemen. These effects are described in the paper. They are not policy recommendations of what should happen ; they are indications of what might happen in certain circumstances. In a bimodal distribution it is easy to effect a reduction in total numbers by a reduction in recruitment, but the consequential longer term fluctuations in numbers are substantial and in sickness absence more so.

Those concerned with problems arising from recruitment, redundancy and age structures of working populations could get useful information by using appropriately realistic assumptions.  相似文献

A review of data on the background of wing dimorphism in carabid beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and especially of the closely relatedCalathus cinctus andC. melanocephalus is given. In bothCalathus species wing dimorphism is inherited in a simple Mendelian fashion with the brachypterous condition dominant, but inC. melanocephalus the expression of the long winged genotype is under environmental control as well. The development of long winged phenotypes in the latter species is favoured by relatively favourable environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and a high food-supply. The higher fecundity of the larger and heavier long winged females of both species may compensate for losses of long winged phenotypes by flight activities. The evolutionary significance of both types of inheritance is discussed in relation to dispersal. The ‘fixed type’ as found inC. cinctus is considered an opportunistic short term ‘between sites strategy’, whereas the ‘dynamic type’ ofC. melanocephalus represents a flexible long term ‘within sites strategy’.  相似文献

Summary Litter size was positively correlated with latitude and altitude but not with production of offspring or with body size inPeromyscus. Increased litter size in northern populations probably reflects shortening the breeding season by climate and not a greater mortality rate at northern latitudes compared to southern latitudes. Production of offspring was negatively correlated with body size but not with latitude, altitude, or litter size. This is probably due to larger species living longer and taking longer to mature.  相似文献

Variability in wing form of crickets   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Loss of functional hindwings is observed in most subfamilies of Japanese crickets. Habitat, behaviour, body size and phylogenetic factors might be involved, but interactions among them may obscure the general trend. Wing dimorphism is common among the relatively small-sized members of Gryllinae, and the two small-sized subfamilies, Nemobiinae and Trigonidiinae. Both environmental cues (e. g. photoperiod) and genetic factors affect the wing form. InDianemobius fascipes (Nemobiinae), the percentage macroptery was drastically changed by selection for macroptery or microptery. Crossing experiments indicated polygenic control of wing form as well asX-chromosomal and maternal effects. Neither the long-winged nor short-winged line bred true after 40 generations of selection. Full-sib families revealed a large genetic variation in frequency of macropterous forms within a population. The genetic determination of the propensity for macropterism did not seem to be directly coupled to the mechanism performing the photoperiodic time-measurement.  相似文献

Summary The effects of breeding territoriality on the stability of grey red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rufocanus bedfordiae) populations were investigated on a control grid and a grid on which the voles were fed, in an outdoor enclosure in Hokkaido, Japan. Vole populations were monitored by live trapping from 1984 to 1986: (1) Population density was 2–7 times greater on the experimental grid to which food was added than on the control grid. Reproductive output was more closely associated with the difference in density between grids than survival or dispersal (immigration and emigration) rates. (2) The number of adult females and pregnancy rate of the experimental population were significantly greater than those of the control one. The difference in the number of adult females between the populations was greater than that in pregnancy rate. (3) The proportion of successful litters and the number of weanlings per litter were not significantly different between the control and experimental population. (4) Adult females held territories on both the control and experimental grid; they were spaced out more than would be expected from random occupation. The territories overlapped more on the experimental grid than on the control grid. (5) Mean territory size of adult females on the experimental grid was about half of that on the control grid. The territory size was correlated negatively with population density. (6) The proportion of trap sites that were used by adult females was significantly greater on the experimental grid than on the control grid. This suggests that adult females on the experimental grid used the area more extensively. This factor, in association with territory size and overlapping of territory, was also important in causing the difference in the number of adult females between the grids. (7) These results call into question the hypothesis that territoriality stabilizes the density in populations ofClethrionomys.  相似文献

The reproduction ofSogatella furcifera was investigated in a chemically fertilized rice field and an organically farmed field. In the latter, the density of immigrants was significantly higher, while the settling rate of female adults and the survival rate of immature stages of ensuing generations were lower. The number of eggs laid by a female of the invading and following generations was smaller, and the percentage of brachypterous females in the next generation was also lower. Consequently, the density of nymphs and adults in the ensuing generations decreased in the organically farmed field. For an experimental comparison, potted rice plants were cultivated using seedlings and soil from the chemically fertilized or the organically farmed fields. WhenSogatella furcifera was reared on these plants, both the reproductive rate and the appearance rate of brachypterous female adults were lower in the organic treatment. Egg hatchability was also lower in the organic treatment. This experiment suggested that a specific nutritional condition in rice plants suppressed the population ofS. furcifera in the organically farmed field.  相似文献

Summary Luehdorfia butterflies lay eggs in clusters. Clones of their host plants (Asiasarum andHeterotropa) are distributed pacthily among the understory of deciduous forests. Groups ofLuehdorfia larvae often exhaust the clones and may wander over the forest floor seeking new clones. The highest mortality observed is during this wandering period. To elucidate whyLuehdorfia butterflies lay eggs in clusters, a simulation experiment was made for hypothetical populations which lay eggs in clusters or singly. Field data on larval mortality, consumption, density of host clones and leaf weight forLuehdorfia japonica were incorporated into the model. The predictions of the simulation were: (1) When the egg density is low, the single egg type could leave many more pupae than the egg clustering type, but when the egg density is high, the former might leave smaller number of pupae than the latter; and (2) There are optimal sizes of egg clusters for different egg densities and the optimal size becomes larger as the egg density increased.
