In this paper, we consider the numbers of observations in two-sided neighbourhoods of the kth and (n?r)th order statistics from a sample of size n and show that they are asymptotically independent as n→∞. We also establish a result that generalizes all the existing results regarding the asymptotic independence of numbers of observations in the left and right neighbourhoods of order statistics. Finally, we consider the limiting joint behaviour of numbers of observations in the neighbourhoods of s central order statistics and establish that they are asymptotically independent.  相似文献

Let X1, X2,… be a sequence of independent random variables with distribution functions F1, where 1 ≤ in, and for each n ≥ 1 let X1,n ≤… ≤ Xn,n denote the order statistics of the first n random variables. Under suitable hypotheses about the F1, we characterize the limit distribution functions H(x) for which P(Xk,n ? anx + bn) → H(x), where an > 0 and bn are real constants. We consider the cases where κ = κ(n) satisfies √n {κ(n)/n — λ} → 0 and √n {κ(n)/n — λ} → ∞ separately.  相似文献

The order statistics from a sample of size n≥3 from a discrete distribution form a Markov chain if and only if the parent distribution is supported by one or two points. More generally, a necessary and sufficient condition for the order statistics to form a Markov chain for (n≥3) is that there does not exist any atom x0 of the parent distribution F satisfying F(x0-)>0 and F(x0)<1. To derive this result a formula for the joint distribution of order statistics is proved, which is of an interest on its own. Many exponential characterizations implicitly assume the Markov property. The corresponding putative geometric characterizations cannot then be reasonably expected to obtain. Some illustrative geometric characterizations are discussed.  相似文献

The Steffensen inequality is applied to derive quantile bounds for the expectations of generalized order statistics from a distribution belonging to a particular subclass of distributions. The subclass consists of F having the property that F?1(0+)=x0>0 and that x →[1? F(x)]xz is nonincreasing for all x > X0 and some z > 0.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the limiting behavior of numbers of observations near an order statistic. We then derive an expression for the joint distribution of the numbers of observations that fall into the open right a-vicinity and left b-vicinity of k  th and (n-r)(n-r)th order statistics, respectively, from a sample of size n and establish the result that they are asymptotically independent under suitable conditions.  相似文献

There are several well-known mappings which transform the first r common order statistics in a sample of size n from a standard uniform distribution to a full vector of dimension r of order statistics in a sample of size r from a uniform distribution. Continuing the results reported in a previous paper by the authors, it is shown that transformations of these types do not lead to order statistics from an i.i.d. sample of random variables, in general, when being applied to order statistics from non-uniform distributions. By accepting the loss of one dimension, a structure-preserving transformation exists for power function distributions.  相似文献

Let X(1,n,m1,k),X(2,n,m2,k),…,X(n,n,m,k) be n generalized order statistics from a continuous distribution F which is strictly increasing over (a,b),−a<b, the support of F. Let g be an absolutely continuous and monotonically increasing function in (a,b) with finite g(a+),g(b) and E(g(X)). Then for some positive integer s,1<sn, we give characterization of distributions by means of

Consider n independent random variables Zi,…, Zn on R with common distribution function F, whose upper tail belongs to a parametric family F(t) = Fθ(t),t ≥ x0, where θ ∈ ? ? R d. A necessary and sufficient condition for the family Fθ, θ ∈ ?, is established such that the k-th largest order statistic Zn?k+1:n alone constitutes the central sequence yielding local asymptotic normality ( LAN ) of the loglikelihood ratio of the vector (Zn?i+1:n)1 i=kof the k largest order statistics. This is achieved for k = k(n)→n→∞∞ with k/n→n→∞ 0.

In the case of vectors of central order statistics ( Zr:n, Zr+1:n,…, Zs:n ), with r/n and s/n both converging to q ∈ ( 0,1 ), it turns out that under fairly general conditions any order statistic Zm:n with r ≤ m ≤s builds the central sequence in a pertaining LAN expansion. These results lead to asymptotically optimal tests and estimators of the underlying parameter, which depend on single order statistics only  相似文献

We introduce a uniform generalized order statistic process. It is a simple Markov process whose initial segment can be identified with a set of uniform generalized order statistics. A standard marginal transformation leads to a generalized order statistic process related to non-uniform generalized order statistics. It is then demonstrated that the nth variable in such a process has the same distribution as an nth Pfeifer record value. This process representation of Pfeifer records facilitates discussion of the possible limit laws for Pfeifer records and, in some cases, of sums thereof. Because of the close relationship between Pfeifer records and generalized order statistics, the results shed some light on the problem of determining the nature of the possible limiting distributions of the largest generalized order statistic.  相似文献

In this paper we give some properties of the expected values of any order statistic when one of its adjacent order statistics is known (order mean function) from a sequence of sizen of independent and identically distributed random variables with discrete distribution. Furthermore, we obtain the explicit expressions of the distribution from these order mean functions, and finally, we show the necessary and sufficient conditions for any real function to be an order mean function. We also add some examples of characterization of discrete distributions from the order mean functions. Let X ? (r), r ≥ 1, denote generalized order statistics based on an arbitrary distribution function F with finite pth absolute moment for some 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞. We present sharp upper bounds on E(X ? (s) ? X ? (r)), 1 ≤ r < s, for F being either general or life distribution. The bounds are expressed in various scale units generated by pth central absolute or raw moments of F, respectively. The distributions achieving the bounds are specified.  相似文献

In this paper, by considering a (3n+1) -dimensional random vector (X0, XT, YT, ZT)T having a multivariate elliptical distribution, we derive the exact joint distribution of (X0, aTX(n), bTY[n], cTZ[n])T, where a, b, c∈?n, X(n)=(X(1), …, X(n))T, X(1)<···<X(n), is the vector of order statistics arising from X, and Y[n]=(Y[1], …, Y[n])T and Z[n]=(Z[1], …, Z[n])T denote the vectors of concomitants corresponding to X(n) ((Y[r], Z[r])T, for r=1, …, n, is the vector of bivariate concomitants corresponding to X(r)). We then present an alternate approach for the derivation of the exact joint distribution of (X0, X(r), Y[r], Z[r])T, for r=1, …, n. We show that these joint distributions can be expressed as mixtures of four-variate unified skew-elliptical distributions and these mixture forms facilitate the prediction of X(r), say, based on the concomitants Y[r] and Z[r]. Finally, we illustrate the usefulness of our results by a real data.  相似文献

Suppose (X, Y) has a Downton's bivariate exponential distribution with correlation ρ. For a random sample of size n from (X, Y), let X r:n be the rth X-order statistic and Y [r:n] be its concomitant. We investigate estimators of ρ when all the parameters are unknown and the available data is an incomplete bivariate sample made up of (i) all the Y-values and the ranks of associated X-values, i.e. (i, Y [i:n]), 1≤in, and (ii) a Type II right-censored bivariate sample consisting of (X i:n , Y [i:n]), 1≤ir<n. In both setups, we use simulation to examine the bias and mean square errors of several estimators of ρ and obtain their estimated relative efficiencies. The preferred estimator under (i) is a function of the sample correlation of (Y i:n , Y [i:n]) values, and under (ii), a method of moments estimator involving the regression function is preferred.  相似文献

Analogs of some classical recurrence relations for moments of order statistics for a one truncation parameter densities are derived. These relate the kthorder moment of the rthorder statistic Xr:nto the kthorder moment of Xl:ior Xr:rvia an integral operator. Similar results are obtained for product moments. An application is also given.  相似文献

Let X (n) and X (1) be the largest and smallest order statistics, respectively, of a random sample of fixed size n. Quite generally, X (1) and X (n) are approximately independent for n sufficiently large. In this article, we study the dependence properties of random extremes in terms of their copula, when the sample size has a left-truncated binomial distribution and show that they tend to be more dependent in this case. We also give closed-form formulas for the measures of association Kendall's τ and Spearman's ρ to measure the amount of dependence between two extremes.  相似文献

The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K–S) one-sided and two-sided tests of goodness of fit based on the test statistics D+ n D? n and Dn are equivalent to tests based on taking the cumulative probability of the i–th order statistic of a sample of size n to be (i–.5)/n. Modified test statistics C+ n, C? n and Cn are obtained by taking the cumulative probability to be i/(n+l). More generally, the cumula-tive probability may be taken to be (i?δ)/(n+l?2δ), as suggested by Blom (1958), where 0 less than or equal δ less than or equal .5. Critical values of the test statis-tics can be found by interpolating inversely in tables of the proba-bility integrals obtained by setting a=l/(n+l?2δ) in an expression given by Pyke (1959). Critical values for the D's (corresponding to δ=.5) have been tabulated to 5DP by Miller (1956) for n=1(1)100. The authors have made analogous tabulations for the C's (corresponding to δ=0) [previously tabulated by Durbin (1969) for n=1(1)60(2)100] and for the test statistics E+ n, E? n and En corresponding to δ f.3. They have also made a Monte Carlo comparison of the power of the modified tests with that of the K–S test for several hypothetical distributions. In a number of cases, the power of the modified tests is greater than that of the K–S test, especially when the standard deviation is greater under the alternative than under the null hypo-thesis.  相似文献

The study of the reliability properties of (n ? k + 1)-out-of-n systems has gained a great deal of attention, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In this article, we consider (n ? k + 1)-out-of-n systems with exchangeable components and study the stochastic properties of two forms of residual lifetimes of such systems under the following conditions: n ? r + 1 (r ? k) components of the system are operating at time t > 0, and/or the rth (r < k) component has failed, but the system is working at time t. In addition, some results relating to the functions of the mean general residual lifetimes (MGRL) are derived for these systems. Finally, in accordance with the generalized Farlie–Gumbel–Morgenstern model, we present the reliability properties of the general residual lifetime of (n ? k + 1)-out-of-n systems and investigate the asymptotic behavior of the proposed MGRL functions with exponential marginals.  相似文献

Viewing the future order statistics as latent variables at each Gibbs sampling iteration, several Bayesian approaches to predict future order statistics based on type-II censored order statistics, X(1), X(2), …, X(r), of a size n( > r) random sample from a four-parameter generalized modified Weibull (GMW) distribution, are studied. Four parameters of the GMW distribution are first estimated via simulation study. Then various Bayesian approaches, which include the plug-in method, the Monte Carlo method, the Gibbs sampling scheme, and the MCMC procedure, are proposed to develop the prediction intervals of unobserved order statistics. Finally, four type-II censored samples are utilized to investigate the predictions.  相似文献

This article presents non-parametric predictive inference for future order statistics. Given the data consisting of n real-valued observations, m future observations are considered and predictive probabilities are presented for the rth-ordered future observation. In addition, joint and conditional probabilities for events involving multiple future order statistics are presented. The article further presents the use of such predictive probabilities for order statistics in statistical inference, in particular considering pairwise and multiple comparisons based on two or more independent groups of data.  相似文献
