In this article, we present a new efficient iteration estimation approach based on local modal regression for single-index varying-coefficient models. The resulted estimators are shown to be robust with regardless of outliers and error distributions. The asymptotic properties of the estimators are established under some regularity conditions and a practical modified EM algorithm is proposed for the new method. Moreover, to achieve sparse estimator when there exists irrelevant variables in the index parameters, a variable selection procedure based on SCAD penalty is developed to select significant parametric covariates and the well-known oracle properties are also derived. Finally, some numerical examples with various distributed errors and a real data analysis are conducted to illustrate the validity and feasibility of our proposed method.

A number of nonstationary models have been developed to estimate extreme events as function of covariates. A quantile regression (QR) model is a statistical approach intended to estimate and conduct inference about the conditional quantile functions. In this article, we focus on the simultaneous variable selection and parameter estimation through penalized quantile regression. We conducted a comparison of regularized Quantile Regression model with B-Splines in Bayesian framework. Regularization is based on penalty and aims to favor parsimonious model, especially in the case of large dimension space. The prior distributions related to the penalties are detailed. Five penalties (Lasso, Ridge, SCAD0, SCAD1 and SCAD2) are considered with their equivalent expressions in Bayesian framework. The regularized quantile estimates are then compared to the maximum likelihood estimates with respect to the sample size. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms are developed for each hierarchical model to simulate the conditional posterior distribution of the quantiles. Results indicate that the SCAD0 and Lasso have the best performance for quantile estimation according to Relative Mean Biais (RMB) and the Relative Mean-Error (RME) criteria, especially in the case of heavy distributed errors. A case study of the annual maximum precipitation at Charlo, Eastern Canada, with the Pacific North Atlantic climate index as covariate is presented.

Based on B-spline basis functions and smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty, we present a new estimation and variable selection procedure based on modal regression for partially linear additive models. The outstanding merit of the new method is that it is robust against outliers or heavy-tail error distributions and performs no worse than the least-square-based estimation for normal error case. The main difference is that the standard quadratic loss is replaced by a kernel function depending on a bandwidth that can be automatically selected based on the observed data. With appropriate selection of the regularization parameters, the new method possesses the consistency in variable selection and oracle property in estimation. Finally, both simulation study and real data analysis are performed to examine the performance of our approach.

In this paper, we discuss the selection of random effects within the framework of generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs). Based on a reparametrization of the covariance matrix of random effects in terms of modified Cholesky decomposition, we propose to add a shrinkage penalty term to the penalized quasi-likelihood (PQL) function of the variance components for selecting effective random effects. The shrinkage penalty term is taken as a function of the variance of random effects, initiated by the fact that if the variance is zero then the corresponding variable is no longer random (with probability one). The proposed method takes the advantage of a convenient computation for the PQL estimation and appealing properties for certain shrinkage penalty functions such as LASSO and SCAD. We propose to use a backfitting algorithm to estimate the fixed effects and variance components in GLMMs, which also selects effective random effects simultaneously. Simulation studies show that the proposed approach performs quite well in selecting effective random effects in GLMMs. Real data analysis is made using the proposed approach, too.

Variable selection is fundamental to high-dimensional multivariate generalized linear models. The smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) method can solve the problem of variable selection and estimation. The choice of the tuning parameter in the SCAD method is critical, which controls the complexity of the selected model. This article proposes a criterion to select the tuning parameter for the SCAD method in multivariate generalized linear models, which is shown to be able to identify the true model consistently. Simulation studies are conducted to support theoretical findings, and two real data analysis are given to illustrate the proposed method.

In this article, we develop a generalized penalized linear unbiased selection (GPLUS) algorithm. The GPLUS is designed to compute the paths of penalized logistic regression based on the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) and the minimax concave penalties (MCP). The main idea of the GPLUS is to compute possibly multiple local minimizers at individual penalty levels by continuously tracing the minimizers at different penalty levels. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm in logistic and linear regression. The simulation results favor the SCAD and MCP’s selection accuracy encompassing a suitable range of penalty levels.

Abstract

In this article, we focus on the variable selection for semiparametric varying coefficient partially linear model with response missing at random. Variable selection is proposed based on modal regression, where the non parametric functions are approximated by B-spline basis. The proposed procedure uses SCAD penalty to realize variable selection of parametric and nonparametric components simultaneously. Furthermore, we establish the consistency, the sparse property and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimators. The penalty estimation parameters value of the proposed method is calculated by EM algorithm. Simulation studies are carried out to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed variable selection procedure.

This paper extends the adaptive LASSO (ALASSO) for simultaneous parameter estimation and variable selection to a varying-coefficient partially linear model where some of the covariates are subject to measurement errors of an additive form. We draw comparisons with the SCAD, and prove that both the ALASSO and the SCAD attain the oracle property under this setup. We further develop an algorithm in the spirit of LARS for finding the solution path of the ALASSO in practical applications. Finite sample properties of the proposed methods are examined in a simulation study, and a real data example based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CSFII) is considered.

In this paper, we propose a novel Max-Relevance and Min-Common-Redundancy criterion for variable selection in linear models. Considering that the ensemble approach for variable selection has been proven to be quite effective in linear regression models, we construct a variable selection ensemble (VSE) by combining the presented stochastic correlation coefficient algorithm with a stochastic stepwise algorithm. We conduct extensive experimental comparison of our algorithm and other methods using two simulation studies and four real-life data sets. The results confirm that the proposed VSE leads to promising improvement on variable selection and regression accuracy.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we study a novelly robust variable selection and parametric component identification simultaneously in varying coefficient models. The proposed estimator is based on spline approximation and two smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalties through rank regression, which is robust with respect to heavy-tailed errors or outliers in the response. Furthermore, when the tuning parameter is chosen by modified BIC criterion, we show that the proposed procedure is consistent both in variable selection and the separation of varying and constant coefficients. In addition, the estimators of varying coefficients possess the optimal convergence rate under some assumptions, and the estimators of constant coefficients have the same asymptotic distribution as their counterparts obtained when the true model is known. Simulation studies and a real data example are undertaken to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed variable selection procedure.

We study the estimation and variable selection for a partial linear single index model (PLSIM) when some linear covariates are not observed, but their ancillary variables are available. We use the semiparametric profile least-square based estimation procedure to estimate the parameters in the PLSIM after the calibrated error-prone covariates are obtained. Asymptotic normality for the estimators are established. We also employ the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty to select the relevant variables in the PLSIM. The resulting SCAD estimators are shown to be asymptotically normal and have the oracle property. Performance of our estimation procedure is illustrated through numerous simulations. The approach is further applied to a real data example.

Variable selection in elliptical Linear Mixed Models (LMMs) with a shrinkage penalty function (SPF) is the main scope of this study. SPFs are applied for parameter estimation and variable selection simultaneously. The smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (SCAD) is one of the SPFs and it is adapted into the elliptical LMM in this study. The proposed idea is highly applicable to a variety of models which are set up with different distributions such as normal, student-t, Pearson VII, power exponential and so on. Simulation studies and real data example with one of the elliptical distributions show that if the variable selection is also a concern, it is worthwhile to carry on the variable selection and the parameter estimation simultaneously in the elliptical LMM.

In this paper, semiparametric modelling for longitudinal data with an unstructured error process is considered. We propose a partially linear additive regression model for longitudinal data in which within-subject variances and covariances of the error process are described by unknown univariate and bivariate functions, respectively. We provide an estimating approach in which polynomial splines are used to approximate the additive nonparametric components and the within-subject variance and covariance functions are estimated nonparametrically. Both the asymptotic normality of the resulting parametric component estimators and optimal convergence rate of the resulting nonparametric component estimators are established. In addition, we develop a variable selection procedure to identify significant parametric and nonparametric components simultaneously. We show that the proposed SCAD penalty-based estimators of non-zero components have an oracle property. Some simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite-sample performance of the proposed estimation and variable selection procedures. A real data set is also analysed to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

A number of variable selection methods have been proposed involving nonconvex penalty functions. These methods, which include the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty and the minimax concave penalty (MCP), have been demonstrated to have attractive theoretical properties, but model fitting is not a straightforward task, and the resulting solutions may be unstable. Here, we demonstrate the potential of coordinate descent algorithms for fitting these models, establishing theoretical convergence properties and demonstrating that they are significantly faster than competing approaches. In addition, we demonstrate the utility of convexity diagnostics to determine regions of the parameter space in which the objective function is locally convex, even though the penalty is not. Our simulation study and data examples indicate that nonconvex penalties like MCP and SCAD are worthwhile alternatives to the lasso in many applications. In particular, our numerical results suggest that MCP is the preferred approach among the three methods.

Semiparametric additive partial linear models, containing both linear and nonlinear additive components, are more flexible compared to linear models, and they are more efficient compared to general nonparametric regression models because they reduce the problem known as "curse of dimensionality". In this paper, we propose a new estimation approach for these models, in which we use polynomial splines to approximate the additive nonparametric components and we derive the asymptotic normality for the resulting estimators of the parameters. We also develop a variable selection procedure to identify significant linear components using the smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (SCAD), and we show that the SCAD-based estimators of non-zero linear components have an oracle property. Simulations are performed to examine the performance of our approach as compared to several other variable selection methods such as the Bayesian Information Criterion and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). The proposed approach is also applied to real data from a nutritional epidemiology study, in which we explore the relationship between plasma beta-carotene levels and personal characteristics (e.g., age, gender, body mass index (BMI), etc.) as well as dietary factors (e.g., alcohol consumption, smoking status, intake of cholesterol, etc.).

This paper considers a problem of variable selection in quantile regression with autoregressive errors. Recently, Wu and Liu (2009) investigated the oracle properties of the SCAD and adaptive-LASSO penalized quantile regressions under non identical but independent error assumption. We further relax the error assumptions so that the regression model can hold autoregressive errors, and then investigate theoretical properties for our proposed penalized quantile estimators under the relaxed assumption. Optimizing the objective function is often challenging because both quantile loss and penalty functions may be non-differentiable and/or non-concave. We adopt the concept of pseudo data by Oh et al. (2007) to implement a practical algorithm for the quantile estimate. In addition, we discuss the convergence property of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of the majorization-minimization algorithm (Hunter and Li, 2005) and the difference convex algorithm (Wu and Liu, 2009) through numerical and real examples.

The high-dimensional data arises in diverse fields of sciences, engineering and humanities. Variable selection plays an important role in dealing with high dimensional statistical modelling. In this article, we study the variable selection of quadratic approximation via the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) penalty with a diverging number of parameters. We provide a unified method to select variables and estimate parameters for various of high dimensional models. Under appropriate conditions and with a proper regularization parameter, we show that the estimator has consistency and sparsity, and the estimators of nonzero coefficients enjoy the asymptotic normality as they would have if the zero coefficients were known in advance. In addition, under some mild conditions, we can obtain the global solution of the penalized objective function with the SCAD penalty. Numerical studies and a real data analysis are carried out to confirm the performance of the proposed method.
