Abstract In this article we consider the problem of fitting a five-parameter generalization of the lambda distribution to data given in the form of a grouped frequency table. The estimation of parameters is done by six different procedures: percentiles, moments, probability-weighted moments, minimum Cramér-Von Mises, maximum likelihood, and pseudo least squares. These methods are evaluated and compared using a Monte Carlo study where the parent populations were generalized lambda distribution (GLD) approximations of Normal, Beta, Gamma random variables, and for nine combinations of sample sizes and number of classes. Of the estimators analyzed it is concluded that, although the method of pseudo least squares suffers from a number of limitations, it appears to be the candidate procedure to estimate the parameters of a GLD from grouped data. 相似文献

In this paper a measure of proximity of distributions, when moments are known, is proposed. Based on cases where the exact distribution is known, evidence is given that the proposed measure is accurate to evaluate the proximity of quantiles (exact vs. approximated). The measure may be applied to compare asymptotic and near-exact approximations to distributions, in situations where although being known the exact moments, the exact distribution is not known or the expression for its probability density function is not known or too complicated to handle. In this paper the measure is applied to compare newly proposed asymptotic and near-exact approximations to the distribution of the Wilks Lambda statistic when both groups of variables have an odd number of variables. This measure is also applied to the study of several cases of telescopic near-exact approximations to the exact distribution of the Wilks Lambda statistic based on mixtures of generalized near-integer gamma distributions. 相似文献

This paper characterizes the family of Normal distributions within the class of exponential families of distributions, via the structure of the bias of the maximum likelihood estimator Θ n of the canonical parameter Θ . More specifically, when E θ ( Θ n ) – Θ = (1/ n ) Q ( Θ ) + o (1/ n ), the equality Q ( Θ ) = 0 proves to be a property of the Normal distribution only. The same conclusion is obtained for the one-dimensional case bt assuming that Q ( Θ ) is a polynomial of Θ . 相似文献

In this article, we consider the problem of best linear unbiased estimation and best linear invariant estimation of the common scale parameter of several symmetric distributions using some functions of spacings of all observations taken from individual samples. We also proved a sufficient condition for the non negativity of the common scale estimator obtained by the above method. Furthermore, we obtained necessary and sufficient conditions for the derived estimators to be constant multiple of the sum of first and last spacings of the pooled sample. 相似文献

This article considers the Marsaglia effect by proposing a new test of randomness for Lehmer random number generators. Our test is based on the Manhattan distance criterion between consecutive pairs of random numbers rather than the usually adopted Euclidian distance. We derive the theoretical distribution functions for the Manhattan distance for both overlapping (two dimensional) as well as non-overlapping cases. Extensive goodness-of-fit testing as well as empirical experimentation provides ample proof of the merits of the proposed criterion. 相似文献
