In this article, we consider the three-factor unbalanced nested design model without the assumption of equal error variance. For the problem of testing “main effects” of the three factors, we propose a parametric bootstrap (PB) approach and compare it with the existing generalized F (GF) test. The Type I error rates of the tests are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Our studies show that the PB test performs better than the generalized F-test. The PB test performs very satisfactorily even for small samples while the GF test exhibits poor Type I error properties when the number of factorial combinations or treatments goes up. It is also noted that the same tests can be used to test the significance of the random effect variance component in a three-factor mixed effects nested model under unequal error variances.  相似文献

In 1960 Levene suggested a potentially robust test of homogeneity of variance based on an ordinary least squares analysis of variance of the absolute values of mean-based residuals. Levene's test has since been shown to have inflated levels of significance when based on the F-distribution, and tests a hypothesis other than homogeneity of variance when treatments are unequally replicated, but the incorrect formulation is now standard output in several statistical packages. This paper develops a weighted least squares analysis of variance of the absolute values of both mean-based and median-based residuals. It shows how to adjust the residuals so that tests using the F -statistic focus on homogeneity of variance for both balanced and unbalanced designs. It shows how to modify the F -statistics currently produced by statistical packages so that the distribution of the resultant test statistic is closer to an F-distribution than is currently the case. The weighted least squares approach also produces component mean squares that are unbiased irrespective of which variable is used in Levene's test. To complete this aspect of the investigation the paper derives exact second-order moments of the component sums of squares used in the calculation of the mean-based test statistic. It shows that, for large samples, both ordinary and weighted least squares test statistics are equivalent; however they are over-dispersed compared to an F variable.  相似文献

In many applications of generalized linear mixed models to clustered correlated or longitudinal data, often we are interested in testing whether a random effects variance component is zero. The usual asymptotic mixture of chi‐square distributions of the score statistic for testing constrained variance components does not necessarily hold. In this article, the author proposes and explores a parametric bootstrap test that appears to be valid based on its estimated level of significance under the null hypothesis. Results from a simulation study indicate that the bootstrap test has a level much closer to the nominal one while the asymptotic test is conservative, and is more powerful than the usual asymptotic score test based on a mixture of chi‐squares. This article considers the problem of testing the null hypothesis of stochastic stationarity in time series characterized by variance shifts at some (known or unknown) point in the sample. It is shown that existing stationarity tests can be severely biased in the presence of such shifts, either oversized or undersized, with associated spurious power gains or losses, depending on the values of the breakpoint parameter and on the ratio of the prebreak to postbreak variance. Under the assumption of a serially independent Gaussian error term with known break date and known variance ratio, a locally best invariant (LBI) test of the null hypothesis of stationarity in the presence of variance shifts is then derived. Both the test statistic and its asymptotic null distribution depend on the breakpoint parameter and also, in general, on the variance ratio. Modifications of the LBI test statistic are proposed for which the limiting distribution is independent of such nuisance parameters and belongs to the family of Cramér–von Mises distributions. One such modification is particularly appealing in that it is simultaneously exact invariant to variance shifts and to structural breaks in the slope and/or level of the series. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the power loss from using our modified statistics in place of the LBI statistic is not large, even in the neighborhood of the null hypothesis, and particularly for series with shifts in the slope and/or level. The tests are extended to cover the cases of weakly dependent error processes and unknown breakpoints. The implementation of the tests are illustrated using output, inflation, and exchange rate data series.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the preliminary test approach to the estimation of the regression parameter in a multiple regression model with multivariate Student-t distribution. The preliminary test estimators (PTE) based on the Wald (W), Likelihood Ratio (LR), and Lagrangian Multiplier (LM) tests are given under the suspicion of stochastic constraints occurring. The bias, mean square error matr ix (MSEM), and weighted mean square error (WMSE) of the proposed estimators are derived and compared. The conditions of superiority of the proposed estimators are obtained. Finally, we conclude that the optimum choice of the level of significance becomes the traditional choice by using the W test.  相似文献

We present a method to generalise the scope of application of group sequential tests designed for equally sized groups of normal observations with known variance. Preserving the significance levels against which standardised statistics are compared leads to tests for unequally grouped data which maintain Type I error probabilities to a high degree of accuracy. The same approach can be followed when observations have unknown variance by setting critical values for Studentised statistics at percentiles of the appropriate t-distributions. This significance level approach is equally applicable to group sequential one-sided tests and two-sided tests, possibly with early stopping permitted to accept the null hypothesis. In applications to equivalence testing, tests are required to maintain a specified power, rather than Type I error rate: such tests can be constructed by defining the standardised test statistics used in the significance level approach with respect to appropriately chosen hypotheses.  相似文献

Many applications of nonparametric tests based on curve estimation involve selecting a smoothing parameter. The author proposes an adaptive test that combines several generalized likelihood ratio tests in order to get power performance nearly equal to whichever of the component tests is best. She derives the asymptotic joint distribution of the component tests and that of the proposed test under the null hypothesis. She also develops a simple method of selecting the smoothing parameters for the proposed test and presents two approximate methods for obtaining its P‐value. Finally, she evaluates the proposed test through simulations and illustrates its application to a set of real data.  相似文献

The asymptotic distributions of many classical test statistics are normal. The resulting approximations are often accurate for commonly used significance levels, 0.05 or 0.01. In genome‐wide association studies, however, the significance level can be as low as 1×10−7, and the accuracy of the p‐values can be challenging. We study the accuracies of these small p‐values are using two‐term Edgeworth expansions for three commonly used test statistics in GWAS. These tests have nuisance parameters not defined under the null hypothesis but estimable. We derive results for this general form of testing statistics using Edgeworth expansions, and find that the commonly used score test, maximin efficiency robust test and the chi‐squared test are second order accurate in the presence of the nuisance parameter, justifying the use of the p‐values obtained from these tests in the genome‐wide association studies.  相似文献

The shrinkage preliminary test ridge regression estimators (SPTRRE) based on the Wald (W), the likelihood ratio (LR) and the Lagrangian multiplier (LM) tests are considered in this paper. The bias and the risk functions of the proposed estimators are derived. The regions of optimality of the estimators are determined under the quadratic risk function. Under the null hypothesis, the SPTRRE based on LM test has the smallest risk, followed by the estimators based on LR and W tests. However, the SPTRRE based on W test performs the best followed by the LR and LM based estimators when the parameter moves away from the subspace of the restrictions. The conditions of superiority of the proposed estimator for both ridge and departure parameters are discussed. The optimum choice of the level of significance becomes the traditional choice by using the W test for all non-negative ridge parameters.  相似文献

Summary.  Penalized regression spline models afford a simple mixed model representation in which variance components control the degree of non-linearity in the smooth function estimates. This motivates the study of lack-of-fit tests based on the restricted maximum likelihood ratio statistic which tests whether variance components are 0 against the alternative of taking on positive values. For this one-sided testing problem a further complication is that the variance component belongs to the boundary of the parameter space under the null hypothesis. Conditions are obtained on the design of the regression spline models under which asymptotic distribution theory applies, and finite sample approximations to the asymptotic distribution are provided. Test statistics are studied for simple as well as multiple-regression models.  相似文献

For testing the equality of two survival functions, the weighted logrank test and the weighted Kaplan–Meier test are the two most widely used methods. Actually, each of these tests has advantages and defects against various alternatives, while we cannot specify in advance the possible types of the survival differences. Hence, how to choose a single test or combine a number of competitive tests for indicating the diversities of two survival functions without suffering a substantial loss in power is an important issue. Instead of directly using a particular test which generally performs well in some situations and poorly in others, we further consider a class of tests indexed by a weighted parameter for testing the equality of two survival functions in this paper. A delete-1 jackknife method is implemented for selecting weights such that the variance of the test is minimized. Some numerical experiments are performed under various alternatives for illustrating the superiority of the proposed method. Finally, the proposed testing procedure is applied to two real-data examples as well.  相似文献

Testing for the equality of regression coefficients across two regressions is a problem considered by analysts in a variety of fields. If the variances of the errors of the two regressions are not equal, then it is known that the standard large sample F-test used to test the equality of the coefficients is compromised by the fact that its actual size can differ substantially from the stated level of significance in small samples. This article addresses this problem and borrows from the literature on the Behrens-Fisher problem to provide some simple modifications of the large sample test which allows one to better control the probability of committing a Type I error. Empirical evidence is presented which indicates that the suggested modifications provide tests which are superior to well-known alternative tests over a wide range of the parameter space.  相似文献

In this study, score test statistics for testing independence in the zero-truncated bivariate Poisson distributions are proposed. The Monte Carlo study shows that the score tests proposed in this article keep the significance level close to the nominal one, but the LR and Wald tests over-reject the null hypothesis when it is true. We consider small sample equivalence tests for exponentialy. Statistical inference in this setting is particularly challenging since equivalence testing procedures typically require much larger sample sizes, in comparison with classical “difference tests,” to perform well. We make use of Butler's marginal likelihood for the shape parameter of a gamma distribution in our development of small sample equivalence tests for exponentiality. We consider two procedures using the principle of confidence interval inclusion, four Bayesian methods, and the uniformly most powerful unbiased (UMPU) test where a saddlepoint approximation to the intractable distribution of a canonical sufficient statistic is used. We perform small sample simulation studies to assess the bias of our various tests and show that all of the Bayes posteriors we consider are integrable. Our simulation studies show that the saddlepoint-approximated UMPU method performs remarkably well for small sample sizes and is the only method that consistently exhibits an empirical significance level close to the nominal 5% level.  相似文献

An adaptive test is proposed for the one-way layout. This test procedure uses the order statistics of the combined data to obtain estimates of percentiles, which are used to select an appropriate set of rank scores for the one-way test statistic. This test is designed to have reasonably high power over a range of distributions. The adaptive procedure proposed for a one-way layout is a generalization of an existing two-sample adaptive test procedure. In this Monte Carlo study, the power and significance level of the F-test, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the normal scores test, and the adaptive test were evaluated for the one-way layout. All tests maintained their significance level for data sets having at least 24 observations. The simulation results show that the adaptive test is more powerful than the other tests for skewed distributions if the total number of observations equals or exceeds 24. For data sets having at least 60 observations the adaptive test is also more powerful than the F-test for some symmetric distributions.  相似文献

A test is proposed for testing the equality of proportions based on the data available from a one-way classification having t treatment conditions and n binary observations per treatment. The test statistic B is a constant multiple of the F-statistic which results when the analysis of variance procedure for the one-way classification is applied to the data and, hence, is computationally simple. The statistic B from this binary analysis of variance (BIANOVA) is distributed asymptotically as a chi-square random variable. The proposed test is uniformly more powerful than either the F-test indicated above or the Pearson chi-square test; however, the attained empirical level of significance is frequently higher than for either of these competitors and usually higher than the stated level of significance for smaller values of n (say n ≤ 20).  相似文献

We begin by describing how to find the limits of confidence intervals by using a few permutation tests of significance. Next, we demonstrate how the adaptive permutation test, which maintains its level of significance, produces confidence intervals that maintain their coverage probabilities. By inverting adaptive tests, adaptive confidence intervals can be found for any single parameter in a multiple regression model. These adaptive confidence intervals are often narrower than the traditional confidence intervals when the error distributions are long‐tailed or skewed. We show how much reduction in width can be achieved for the slopes in several multiple regression models and for the interaction effect in a two‐way design. An R function that can compute these adaptive confidence intervals is described and instructions are provided for its use with real data.  相似文献
