Cultural epigenetics

Taking a Waddingtonian system approach, I discuss some of the implications of recent epigenetic research for the study of social systems. A growing number of investigations show that life-style changes resulting from nutritional, toxicological, and psychological stresses are reflected in changes in the epigenetic profile of individuals, and that learning and memory have epigenetic correlates. Moreover, various types of epigenetic changes can be inherited and affect the characters of descendants. Studying epigenetics can forge new experimental and conceptual bridges between biology, the social sciences and the humanities. For example, new techniques that allow the deciphering of methylation patterns in ancient DNA could be used to study the epigenetics of human cultures in long-gone historical periods, thus enriching and extending our knowledge of human history. Conceptually, an epigenetic perspective blurs traditional distinctions such as those between nature and nurture, plasticity and evolvability.

Cultural Citizenship

This paper seeks to give a sense of the diversity of work that falls within the boundaries of 'cultural citizenship'– a term it locates as emerging from the problematisation of traditional citizenship models by issues of identity and mediation. This paper outlines three distinct strands of cultural citizenship theory, which respectively emphasise multiculturalism, the politics of cultural texts, and dialogical communication. Subsequently, this paper conducts a brief analysis and critique of these strands, enabled by an interrogation of the ways in which they each define and deploy the term 'culture'. It is argued that for cultural citizenship to develop a more coherent terminological 'face', a balance must be struck between a commitment to specificity, and the appeal of abstracted re-imaginings of civil society.

人类文化既有个性,又有共性.文化共性是文化交往和传播的基础.中华文化与阿拉伯—伊斯兰文化既有差异,也有共性.中华文化走向阿拉伯世界,首先是能够被双方认可的“共有文化”.本文旨在探讨如何在寻求中阿文化共性的前提下,促进中华文化走向阿拉伯世界,实现两大文明间的交往和共赢.     

传统文化符号与高校青年文化身份认同

文化符号是地域、民族或国家文化内涵的重要载体和形式。文化符号对象化的结构性机制可以反观人类整体结构、总体精神的发展,也可以使人反观自我个性的状态和形成自我身份认同。传承传统文化符号是青年文化身份认同的重要内容维度。当前消费主义文化下的符号消费对传统文化符号的异化表达,后现代虚无主义文化下对文化符号的碎片化解读,全球化下文化冲突对本土文化符号的挑战等情况不同程度地造成文化符号记忆断裂,影响高校青年群体的自我身份认同。为此,要与时俱进地推进传统文化符号的现当代发展;增强文化自信,不断增进高校青年文化身份认同感;运用高校德育教育体系,培养青年群体传承文化符号的文化自觉。     

Military Cultural Competence

This article offers a new definition of military cultural competence based on a review of the literature. As a starting point, the defining characteristics of military culture is discussed and includes the chain of command, military norms, and military identity. Having laid this groundwork, the multidimensionality of military cultural competence—attitudinal, cognitive, behavior—is discussed. Clinical applications of these various competencies are provided.     

The Cultural Shadows of Cross Cultural Research: Images of Culture

This paper argues that cross-cultural management research is dominated by a restricted structural-functionalist orthodoxy, which is a consequence of Western culture. Such research is trapped by favoured ways of thinking, metaphorically shackled within 'Plato's cave' to the wall of a realist rationalism by the webs of its own imagination. Plato's cave and other metaphors are employed to explore the limits of cross-cultural research with particular reference to understanding Chinese culture and management and to examine possible routes to a less restrictive and more pluralistic direction for future study. In particular, the dialectical change conception is identified as promising in furthering understanding of Chinese culture and management because of its consonance with Taoist philosophy. This enables exposing contradiction and paradox as legitimate in examining culture and promotes a metaphorical 'binocular' vision aimed at transcending the current monocled myopia pervasive and dominant in objectivist studies of culture and management.     

“文化帝国主义”与青少年文化身份认同及价值观建构

尽管对"文化帝国主义"的争执颇多,但在全球化的时代,其依然发生着不可忽视的作用。文化帝国主义深刻影响着我国青少年的文化旨趣,并引发青少年的文化身份危机,其主要表征为本土文化与外来文化的关系更加复杂、传统文化与当代文化的互动日趋削弱、主流文化的影响力逐渐降低。在应对这种文化身份危机中,有各种不同的方式,其最终的目的是为了获得明确的、自信的文化身份。当前,青少年的文化身份认同,与青少年价值观建构在内核上有着极大的互补性和交融性,两者的关系密不可分。     

Cultural Sociology and Other Disciplines: Interdisciplinarity in the Cultural Sciences

The subject of this article is the relationship between cultural sociology and approaches to culture in other social science disciplines. What are the characteristics of the theoretical environment, in which cultural sociology is operating? The article begins by reviewing the literature on interdisciplinarity. Many authors argue that interdisciplinarity is increasing or should be increasing, but the general consensus is that disciplinary isolation is the norm. From this perspective, the relationships between disciplines can be understood in terms of trading zones, in which fields in different disciplines have little in common, theoretically, or empirically. Interdisciplinary communication in ‘trading zones’ requires that participants laboriously construct a set of terms that permits them to exchange ideas. Alternatively, I propose that clusters of fields in different disciplines are linked by free-floating paradigms. Participants in disciplines that share ‘free-floating paradigms’ are able to communicate with one another more readily. The article presents evidence for the second interpretation, drawn from survey articles in disciplinary handbooks. Disciplines and fields in which the study of culture draws from the same pool of paradigms and models and shares a set of lines of inquiry with cultural sociology include traditional disciplines, such as anthropology, communication, geography, history and psychology, and interdisciplinary fields, such as cultural studies, communication, feminist theory, material culture, science studies, and visual culture. Interdisciplinary fields – particularly cultural studies – perform an important role in diffusing paradigms across disciplinary boundaries. Free-floating paradigms are associated with the work of major theorists, such as Lévi-Strauss, Barthes, Foucault, Bourdieu, Lyotard, Baudrillard, Clifford Geertz, Bruno Latour, Adorno, Gramsci, and Habermas.
