We consider the problem of constructing a fixed-size confidence region for a linear function of mean vectors of k multinormal populations, where all covariance matrices are completely unknown. A two-stage procedure is proposed to construct such a confidence region. It is shown that the proposed two-stage procedure is consistent and its asymptotic property for the expected sample size is also given. A Monte Carlo simulation study is given for an illustration.  相似文献

We consider confidence bands for continuous distribution functions. Following a review of the literature we find that previously considered confidence bands, which have exact coverage, are all step-functions jumping only at the sample points. We find that the step-function bands can be constructed through rectangular tolerance regions for an ordered sample from the uniform distribution R(0, 1). We then construct a set of new bands. Two criteria for assessing confidence bands are presented. One is the power criterion, and the other is the average-width criterion that we propose. Numerical comparisons between our new bands and the old bands are carried out, and show that our new bands perform much better than the old ones.  相似文献

Longitudinal studies with repeatedly measured dependent variable (out-come) and time-invariant covariates are common in biomedical and epidemi-ological studies. A useful statistical tool to evaluate the effects of covariates on the outcome variable over time is the varying-coefficient regression, which considers a linear relationship between the covariates and the outcome at a specific time point but assumes the linear coefficients to be smooth curves over time. In order to provide adequate smoothing for each coefficient curve, Wu and Chiang ( 1999 ) proposed a class of component-wise kernel estimators and determined the large sample convergence rates and some of the constant terms of the mean squared errors of their estimators. In this paper we calcu¬late the explicit large sample mean squared errors, including the convergence rates and ail the constant terms, and the asymptotic distributions of the kernel estimators of Wu and Chiang ( 1999 ). These asymptotic distributions are used to construct point-wise confidence intervals and Bonferroni-type confidence bands for the coefficient curves. Through a Monte Carlo simulation, wre show that our confidence regions have adequate coverage probabilities. Applying our procedures to a NIH fetal growth study, we show that our procedures are useful to determine the effects of maternal height, cigarette smoking and al¬cohol consumption on the growth of fetal abdominal circumference over time during pregnancy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The so-called growth incidence curve (GIC) is a popular way to evaluate the distributional pattern of economic growth and pro-poorness of growth in development economics. The log-transformation of the the GIC is related to the sum of empirical quantile processes which allows for constructions of simultaneous confidence bands for the GIC. However, standard constructions of these bands tend to be too wide at the extreme points 0 and 1 because the estimator of the quantile function can be very volatile at the extreme points. In order to construct simultaneous confidence bands which are narrower at the ends, we consider the convergence of quantile processes with weight functions. In particular, we investigate the asymptotic convergence under specific weighted sup-norm metrics and compare different kinds of qualified weight functions. This implies simultaneous confidence bands that are narrower at the boundaries 0 and 1. We show in simulations that these bands have a more regular shape. Finally, we evaluate real data from Uganda with the improved confidence bands.  相似文献

This paper deals with estimation problems under an extended growth curve model with two hierarchical within-individuals design matrices. The model in cludes the one whose mean structure consists of polynomial growth curves with two different degrees. First we propose certain simple estimators of the mean and covariance parameters which are closely related to the MEE's. Some basic properties of the estimators are given. Simultaneous confidence intervals are constructed, based on the estimators, for each and both of two growth curves. We give asymptotic approximations for the corresponding critical points. A numerical example is also given.  相似文献

This paper presents the empirical likelihood inferences for a class of varying-coefficient models with error-prone covariates. We focus on the case that the covariance matrix of the measurement errors is unknown and neither repeated measurements nor validation data are available. We propose an instrumental variable-based empirical likelihood inference method and show that the proposed empirical log-likelihood ratio is asymptotically chi-squared. Then, the confidence intervals for the varying-coefficient functions are constructed. Some simulation studies and a real data application are used to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed empirical likelihood procedure.  相似文献

In the analysis of censored survival data, simultaneous confidence bands are useful devices to help determine the efficacy of a treatment over a control. Semiparametric confidence bands are developed for the difference of two survival curves using empirical likelihood and compared with the nonparametric counterpart. Simulation studies are presented to show that the proposed semiparametric approach is superior, with the new confidence bands giving empirical coverage closer to the nominal level. Further comparisons reveal that the semiparametric confidence bands are tighter and, hence, more informative. For censoring rates between 10 and 40 %, the semiparametric confidence bands provide a relative reduction in enclosed area amounting to between 2 and 10 % over their nonparametric bands, with increased reduction attained for higher censoring rates. The methods are illustrated using an University of Massachusetts AIDS data set.  相似文献

Summary.  Suppose that X has a k -variate spherically symmetric distribution with mean vector θ and identity covariance matrix. We present two spherical confidence sets for θ , both centred at a positive part Stein estimator     . In the first, we obtain the radius by approximating the upper α -point of the sampling distribution of     by the first two non-zero terms of its Taylor series about the origin. We can analyse some of the properties of this confidence set and see that it performs well in terms of coverage probability, volume and conditional behaviour. In the second method, we find the radius by using a parametric bootstrap procedure. Here, even greater improvement in terms of volume over the usual confidence set is possible, at the expense of having a less explicit radius function. A real data example is provided, and extensions to the unknown covariance matrix and elliptically symmetric cases are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we derive an exact formula for the covariance of two innovations computed from a spatial Gibbs point process and suggest a fast method for estimating this covariance. We show how this methodology can be used to estimate the asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum pseudo‐likelihood estimator of the parameters of a spatial Gibbs point process model. This allows us to construct asymptotic confidence intervals for the parameters. We illustrate the efficiency of our procedure in a simulation study for several classical parametric models. The procedure is implemented in the statistical software R , and it is included in spatstat , which is an R package for analyzing spatial point patterns.  相似文献

Classical simultaneous confidence bands for survival functions (i.e., Hall–Wellner, equal precision, and empirical likelihood bands) are derived from transformations of the asymptotic Brownian nature of the Nelson–Aalen or Kaplan–Meier estimators. Due to the properties of Brownian motion, a theoretical derivation of the highest confidence density region cannot be obtained in closed form. Instead, we provide confidence bands derived from a related optimization problem with local time processes. These bands can be applied to the one-sample problem regarding both cumulative hazard and survival functions. In addition, we present a solution to the two-sample problem for testing differences in cumulative hazard functions. The finite sample performance of the proposed method is assessed by Monte Carlo simulation studies. The proposed bands are applied to clinical trial data to assess survival times for primary biliary cirrhosis patients treated with D-penicillamine.

We consider the problem of estimating the parameters of the covariance function of a stationary spatial random process. In spatial statistics, there are widely used parametric forms for the covariance functions, and various methods for estimating the parameters have been proposed in the literature. We develop a method for estimating the parameters of the covariance function that is based on a regression approach. Our method utilizes pairs of observations whose distances are closest to a value h>0h>0 which is chosen in a way that the estimated correlation at distance h is a predetermined value. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our procedure by simulation studies and an application to a water pH data set. Simulation studies show that our method outperforms all well-known least squares-based approaches to the variogram estimation and is comparable to the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the covariance function. We also show that under a mixing condition on the random field, the proposed estimator is consistent for standard one parameter models for stationary correlation functions.  相似文献

Bivariate extreme value theory was used to estimate a rare event (see de Haan and de Ronde [1998. Sea and wind: multivariate extremes at work. Extremes 1, 7–45]). This procedure involves estimating a tail dependence function. There are several estimators for the tail dependence function in the literature, but their limiting distributions depend on partial derivatives of the tail dependence function. In this paper smooth estimators are proposed for estimating partial derivatives of bivariate tail dependence functions and their asymptotic distributions are derived as well. A simulation study is conducted to compare different estimators of partial derivatives in terms of both mean squared errors and coverage accuracy of confidence intervals of the bivariate tail dependence function based on these different estimators of partial derivatives.  相似文献

Abstract. In this article, a naive empirical likelihood ratio is constructed for a non‐parametric regression model with clustered data, by combining the empirical likelihood method and local polynomial fitting. The maximum empirical likelihood estimates for the regression functions and their derivatives are obtained. The asymptotic distributions for the proposed ratio and estimators are established. A bias‐corrected empirical likelihood approach to inference for the parameters of interest is developed, and the residual‐adjusted empirical log‐likelihood ratio is shown to be asymptotically chi‐squared. These results can be used to construct a class of approximate pointwise confidence intervals and simultaneous bands for the regression functions and their derivatives. Owing to our bias correction for the empirical likelihood ratio, the accuracy of the obtained confidence region is not only improved, but also a data‐driven algorithm can be used for selecting an optimal bandwidth to estimate the regression functions and their derivatives. A simulation study is conducted to compare the empirical likelihood method with the normal approximation‐based method in terms of coverage accuracies and average widths of the confidence intervals/bands. An application of this method is illustrated using a real data set.  相似文献

We focus on the construction of confidence corridors for multivariate nonparametric generalized quantile regression functions. This construction is based on asymptotic results for the maximal deviation between a suitable nonparametric estimator and the true function of interest, which follow after a series of approximation steps including a Bahadur representation, a new strong approximation theorem, and exponential tail inequalities for Gaussian random fields. As a byproduct we also obtain multivariate confidence corridors for the regression function in the classical mean regression. To deal with the problem of slowly decreasing error in coverage probability of the asymptotic confidence corridors, which results in meager coverage for small sample sizes, a simple bootstrap procedure is designed based on the leading term of the Bahadur representation. The finite-sample properties of both procedures are investigated by means of a simulation study and it is demonstrated that the bootstrap procedure considerably outperforms the asymptotic bands in terms of coverage accuracy. Finally, the bootstrap confidence corridors are used to study the efficacy of the National Supported Work Demonstration, which is a randomized employment enhancement program launched in the 1970s. Estimating nonlinear effects of continuous covariates by penalized splines is well established for regressions with cross-sectional data as well as for panel data regressions with random effects. Penalized splines are particularly advantageous since they enable both the estimation of unknown nonlinear covariate effects and inferential statements about these effects. The latter are based, for example, on simultaneous confidence bands that provide a simultaneous uncertainty assessment for the whole estimated functions. In this paper, we consider fixed effects panel data models instead of random effects specifications and develop a first-difference approach for the inclusion of penalized splines in this case. We take the resulting dependence structure into account and adapt the construction of simultaneous confidence bands accordingly. In addition, the penalized spline estimates as well as the confidence bands are also made available for derivatives of the estimated effects which are of considerable interest in many application areas. As an empirical illustration, we analyze the dynamics of life satisfaction over the life span based on data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. An open-source software implementation of our methods is available in the R package pamfe.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the survival function based on a semi-Markov model under dependent censoring. We show that the NPMLE is asymptotically normal and achieves asymptotic nonparametric efficiency. We also provide a uniformly consistent estimator of the corresponding asymptotic covariance function based on an information operator. The finite-sample performance of the proposed NPMLE is examined with simulation studies, which show that the NPMLE has smaller mean squared error than the existing estimators and its corresponding pointwise confidence intervals have reasonable coverages. A real example is also presented.  相似文献

Given multivariate normal data and a certain spherically invariant prior distribution on the covariance matrix, it is desired to estimate the moments of the posterior marginal distributions of some scalar functions of the covariance matrix by importance sampling. To this end a family of distributions is defined on the group of orthogonal matrices and a procedure is proposed for selecting one of these distributions for use as a weighting distribution in the importance sampling process. In an example estimates are calculated for the posterior mean and variance of each element in the covariance matrix expressed in the original coordinates, for the posterior mean of each element in the correlation matrix expressed in the original coordinates, and for the posterior mean of each element in the covariance matrix expressed in the coordinates of the principal variables.  相似文献

In ranked-set sampling (RSS), a stratification by ranks is used to obtain a sample that tends to be more informative than a simple random sample of the same size. Previous work has shown that if the rankings are perfect, then one can use RSS to obtain Kolmogorov–Smirnov type confidence bands for the CDF that are narrower than those obtained under simple random sampling. Here we develop Kolmogorov–Smirnov type confidence bands that work well whether the rankings are perfect or not. These confidence bands are obtained by using a smoothed bootstrap procedure that takes advantage of special features of RSS. We show through a simulation study that the coverage probabilities are close to nominal even for samples with just two or three observations. A new algorithm allows us to avoid the bootstrap simulation step when sample sizes are relatively small.  相似文献

A problem arising from the study of the spread of a viral infection among potato plants by aphids appears to involve a mixture of two linear regressions on a single predictor variable. The plant scientists studying the problem were particularly interested in obtaining a 95% confidence upper bound for the infection rate. We discuss briefly the procedure for fitting mixtures of regression models by means of maximum likelihood, effected via the EM algorithm. We give general expressions for the implementation of the M-step and then address the issue of conducting statistical inference in this context. A technique due to T. A. Louis may be used to estimate the covariance matrix of the parameter estimates by calculating the observed Fisher information matrix. We develop general expressions for the entries of this information matrix. Having the complete covariance matrix permits the calculation of confidence and prediction bands for the fitted model. We also investigate the testing of hypotheses concerning the number of components in the mixture via parametric and 'semiparametric' bootstrapping. Finally, we develop a method of producing diagnostic plots of the residuals from a mixture of linear regressions.  相似文献
