For the three-parameter gamma distribution, it is known that the method of moments as well as the maximum likelihood method have difficulties such as non-existence in some range of the parameters, convergence problems, and large variability. For this reason, in this article, we propose a method of estimation based on a transformation involving order statistics from the sample. In this method, the estimates always exist uniquely over the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. The bias and mean squared error of the estimators are also examined by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study, and the empirical results show the small-sample superiority in addition to the desirable large sample properties.  相似文献

In this work, we propose a consistent method of estimation for the parameters of the three-parameter lognormal distribution. We then discuss some properties of these estimators and show by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study that the proposed estimators perform better than some other prominent estimators in terms of bias and root mean squared error. Finally, we present two real-life examples to illustrate the method of estimation proposed.  相似文献

This article is concerned with modifications of both maximum likelihood and moment estimators for parameters of the three-parameter Wei bull distribution. Modifications presented here are basically the same as those previously proposed by the authors (1980, 1981, 1982) in connection with the lognormal and the gamma distributions. Computer programs were prepared for the practical application of these estimators and an illustrative example is included. Results of a simulation study provide insight into the sampling behavior of the new estimators and include comparisons with the traditional moment and maximum likelihood estimators. For some combinations of parameter values, some of the modified estimators considered here enjoy advantages over both moment and maximum likelihood estimators with respect to bias, variance, and/or ease of calculation.  相似文献

The extended three-parameter Burr XII (EBXII) distribution has recently attracted considerable attention for modeling data from various scientific fields since it yields a wide range of skewness and kurtosis values. However, it is well known that the parameter estimates have significant effects on the success of a distribution in real-life applications. In this study, modified moment estimators (MMEs) and modified probability-weighted moments estimators (MPWMEs) are used to estimate the parameters of the EBXII distribution. These two considered estimators are also compared with the commonly used maximum-likelihood, percentiles, least-squares and weighted least-squares estimators in terms of bias and efficiency via an extensive numerical simulation. The MMEs and MPWMEs are observed to perform well in varying sample cases, and the simulation results are supported with application through a real-life data set.  相似文献

In this article, we provide some robust estimation of moments of the random effects and the errors in dynamic panel data models with potential intercorrelation. By differencing the residuals over the individual and time indies, we modify the popularly used Arellano-Bond GMM estimator of the parameter coefficient and study its asymptotic properties. Based on the modified parameter estimator, we construct, respectively, some moment estimators of the random effects and the errors with no affecting each other. Their asymptotic normalities are obtained under some mild conditions. The finite sample properties are investigated by a small Monte Carlo simulation experiment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we propose a parameter estimation method for the three-parameter lognormal distribution based on Type-II right censored data. In the proposed method, under mild conditions, the estimates always exist uniquely in the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we further show that the proposed method performs very well compared to a prominent method of estimation in terms of bias and root mean squared error (RMSE) in small-sample situations. Finally, two examples based on real data sets are presented for illustrating the proposed method.  相似文献

The Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) distribution is a positively skewed distribution, frequently used for analysing lifetime data. In this paper, we propose a simple method of estimation for the parameters of the two-parameter BS distribution by making use of some key properties of the distribution. Compared with the maximum likelihood estimators and the modified moment estimators, the proposed method has smaller bias, but having the same mean square errors as these two estimators. We also discuss some methods of construction of confidence intervals. The performance of the estimators is then assessed by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, an example is used to illustrate the method of estimation developed here.  相似文献

We compare the ordinary least squares, weighted symmetric, modified weighted symmetric (MWS), maximum likelihood, and our new modification for least squares (MLS) estimator for first-order autoregressive in the case of unit root using Monte Carlo method. The Monte Carlo study sheds some light on how well the estimators and the predictors perform on different samples sizes. We found that MLS estimator is less biased and has less mean squared error (MSE) than any other estimators, and MWS predictor error performs well, in the sense of MSE, than any other predictors’ methods. The sample percentiles for the distribution of the τ statistic for the first, second, and third periods in the future, for alternative estimators, are reported to know if it agrees with those of normal distribution or not.  相似文献

Parameter estimates of a new distribution for the strength of brittle fibers and composite materials are considered. An algorithm for generating random numbers from the distribution is suggested. Two parameter estimation methods, one based on a simple least squares procedure and the other based on the maximum likelihood principle, are studied using Monte Carlo simulation. In most cases, the maximum likelihood estimators were found to have somewhat smaller root mean squared error and bias than the least squares estimators. However, the least squares estimates are generally good and provide useful initial values for the numerical iteration used to find the maximum likelihood estimates.  相似文献

Finite Sample Properties of the Two-Step Empirical Likelihood Estimator   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We investigate the finite sample properties of two-step empirical likelihood (EL) estimators. These estimators are shown to have the same third-order bias properties as EL itself. The Monte Carlo study provides evidence that (i) higher order asymptotics fails to provide a good approximation in the sense that the bias of the two-step EL estimators can be substantial and sensitive to the number of moment restrictions and (ii) the two-step EL estimators may have heavy tails.  相似文献

Lognormal distribution is one of the popular distributions used for modelling positively skewed data, especially those encountered in economic and financial data. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for the estimation of parameters and quantiles of the three-parameter lognormal distribution, which avoids the problem of unbounded likelihood, by using statistics that are invariant to unknown location. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, we then show that the proposed method performs well compared to other prominent methods in terms of both bias and mean-squared error. Finally, we present two illustrative examples.  相似文献

In this paper we propose Stein‐type shrinkage estimators for the parameter vector of a Poisson regression model when it is suspected that some of the parameters may be restricted to a subspace. We develop the properties of these estimators using the notion of asymptotic distributional risk. The shrinkage estimators are shown to have higher efficiency than the classical estimators for a wide class of models. Furthermore, we consider three different penalty estimators: the LASSO, adaptive LASSO, and SCAD estimators and compare their relative performance with that of the shrinkage estimators. Monte Carlo simulation studies reveal that the shrinkage strategy compares favorably to the use of penalty estimators, in terms of relative mean squared error, when the number of inactive predictors in the model is moderate to large. The shrinkage and penalty strategies are applied to two real data sets to illustrate the usefulness of the procedures in practice.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to examine the small sample properties of various ridge estimators along with least squares, in some special settings.Specifically, we consider a first order autoregressive structuure for normal and nonnormal disturbances, and report on a Monte Carlo study the small sample behavior of these estimators according to the criteria of bias and dispersion. The results suggest that under all the examined settings and for all the criteria used the HKB estimator exhibited a superior performance compared to the other estimators, while the LS and LW estimators gave consistently poor results. Also if the error term is only moderately autocorrelated the performance of the ridge estimators that do not account for autocorrelation outperform their counterparts as well as least squares that account for autocorrelation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We investigate the finite sample properties of two-step empirical likelihood (EL) estimators. These estimators are shown to have the same third-order bias properties as EL itself. The Monte Carlo study provides evidence that (i) higher order asymptotics fails to provide a good approximation in the sense that the bias of the two-step EL estimators can be substantial and sensitive to the number of moment restrictions and (ii) the two-step EL estimators may have heavy tails.  相似文献

In the context of estimating regression coefficients of an ill-conditioned binary logistic regression model, we develop a new biased estimator having two parameters for estimating the regression vector parameter β when it is subjected to lie in the linear subspace restriction Hβ = h. The matrix mean squared error and mean squared error (MSE) functions of these newly defined estimators are derived. Moreover, a method to choose the two parameters is proposed. Then, the performance of the proposed estimator is compared to that of the restricted maximum likelihood estimator and some other existing estimators in the sense of MSE via a Monte Carlo simulation study. According to the simulation results, the performance of the estimators depends on the sample size, number of explanatory variables, and degree of correlation. The superiority region of our proposed estimator is identified based on the biasing parameters, numerically. It is concluded that the new estimator is superior to the others in most of the situations considered and it is recommended to the researchers.  相似文献

The paper deals with the problem of parameter estimation in the presence of a guess value and attempts to justify the use of Bayes estimators as an alternative to ordinary shrinkage estimators. Finally, certain Bayes estimators of exponential parameters are obtained under type II censoring, and these are compared with the corresponding MLEs and ordinary shrinkage estimators using a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

Shrinkage estimator is a commonly applied solution to the general problem caused by multicollinearity. Recently, the ridge regression (RR) estimators for estimating the ridge parameter k in the negative binomial (NB) regression have been proposed. The Jackknifed estimators are obtained to remedy the multicollinearity and reduce the bias. A simulation study is provided to evaluate the performance of estimators. Both mean squared error (MSE) and the percentage relative error (PRE) are considered as the performance criteria. The simulated result indicated that some of proposed Jackknifed estimators should be preferred to the ML method and ridge estimators to reduce MSE and bias.  相似文献
