Extensive restoration efforts in southern California coastal wetlands highlight several challenges for urban salt marsh restoration, including: habitat isolation and fragmentation, impacts from exotic species, the loss of transitional upland habitats, and other alterations to hydrologic and sediment dynamics. Habitat isolation impairs colonization by dispersal-limited plants, so planting becomes essential to achieve diverse salt marshes. Low species richness slows the development of salt marsh functions (e.g., biomass and nitrogen accumulation) in southern California. A variety of exotic species have invaded the upper reaches of salt marshes in southern California, most commonly in marshes with hydrological modifications. The replacement of gradual slopes between wetlands and uplands by sharp transitions abutting urban development limits our ability to restore rare plant and animal populations. Where hydrologic connections are impaired by roads and other structures, the natural migration of channels is constrained, and sediment dynamics often lead to lagoon mouth closure.A case study from Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (hereafter, Tijuana Estuary) further illustrates a specific lesson for urban salt marsh restoration concerning watershed issues and sediment dynamics. In the south arm of Tijuana Estuary, watershed urbanization, along with local climate, topography, and soils, has resulted in extreme rates of sediment accumulation. Sedimentation rates in a salt marsh in the south arm of the estuary ranged from 10 to 30 cm over a single winter (1994–95), substantially greater than historic sedimentation rates in the estuary or rates from other coastal wetlands with storm sedimentation. Sediment buried salt marsh vegetation in place and is converting intertidal salt marsh to uplands. These impacts illustrate the need to consider watershed issues and sediment control in managing and restoring urban salt marshes.  相似文献

A survey examined the influence of Argentine (Linepithema humile (Mayr)) and coastal brown ant (Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius)) populations on other ants in the Perth metropolitan area, Western Australia. Twelve gardens (yards) were sampled; four infested by Argentine ants, three infested by coastal brown ants, and five controls where these two tramp ants were absent or collected only as isolated strays. Collection methods used were pitfall trapping and hand collection. A total of 27 species was recorded. Eight of these species, including the above two tramp ants, are non-native to the region. Pheidole megacephala was the most abundant species, comprising 95.4% of ants in P. megacephala–infested gardens. Linepithema humile comprised 92.1% of ants in L. humile–infested gardens. Other common ants were the native Iridomyrmex chasei and the introduced species Tetramorium simillimum and Tetramorium bicarinatum. The cryptic introduced species Cardiocondyla nuda and Tetramorium simillimum appear able to persist in small numbers in L. humile–infested gardens, but virtually no other ant species occurred where the coastal brown ant was well established. Mean richness, diversity, and evenness were significantly different between P. megacephala–infested and control gardens, and significantly different between L. humile–infested and control gardens. Diversity and evenness, but not richness, were significantly different between P. megacephala–infested and L. humile–infested gardens. Ordination analysis revealed that the three types of gardens had very different ant community profiles.  相似文献

While former salt marsh sites filled with human transported material (HTM) have altered the surface marsh ecosystem, if artificial drainage is absent, subsurface conditions may continue favorable for denitrification, a microbial process reducing nitrogen (N) export to estuaries. We used piezometer networks to evaluate the in situ groundwater denitrification capacity and nitrous oxide (N2O) flux (with 15N-enriched nitrate-N via the push-pull method) in four former fringing salt marshes topped by HTM along the Rhode Island coast, U.S.A. Groundwater at these sites commonly interacted with the buried marsh horizon and the HTM. In situ groundwater denitrification capacity site means ranged from 15.2 to 71.7 μg?N?kg?1d?1 with no significant differences between sites due to high intrasite variability. The site with the highest and most consistent denitrification capacity also had HTM of the finest texture and highest soluble organic carbon. Three of four sites had minimal N2O flux [mean N2O:(N2O + N2)?=?0.082] while the final site had N2O generation rates up to 52.5 μg?N?kg?1?d?1. The site with the highest N2O contributions also had the lowest ambient groundwater nitrate-N indicating lack of priming for N2O reduction to N2. Former salt marshes with HTM deposits may still have the capacity for substantial groundwater denitrification capacity, similar to that observed in undisturbed salt marshes, but may also contribute substantially to global N2O emissions. For both salt marsh restoration and greenhouse gas mitigation efforts, attention should be given to ensuring that a tidally-driven, fluctuating water table regularly intercepts the buried organic horizons of the filled salt marsh.  相似文献

As urbanization expands into rural areas, an increase in the number of non-native plant species at the urban-rural interface is expected due in large part to the increased availability of propagules from ornamental plantings. A study investigating the distribution of non-native plants in the understories of riparian forests across an urban-to-rural gradient north of Columbus, GA was initiated in 2003. A significantly greater number of non-native plant species occurred at the urban sites and at one site at the urban-rural interface, where 20 to 33% of the species encountered were non-native. In contrast, at the more rural sites non-native species comprised 4–14% of the total number of species. However, the importance values of non-native species as a whole did not change significantly across the land use gradient due to the high frequency and abundance of three non-native species (Ligustrum sinense, Lonicera japonica, and Microstegium vimineum) in the majority of the watersheds. Reductions in species richness and overstory reproduction associated with these non-natives could impact long-term forest structure and ecosystem function.  相似文献

A series of sap flow (transpiration, TRP) and energy balance components measurements were carried out in a representative tree hedgerow of Fraxinus uhdei in Mexico City (19° 19' N, 99° 11' W, 2250 m ASL). Measurements of sap flow in the trunks of the trees was selected as an alternative tool instead of eddy covariance or Bowen ratio-energy balance methods in order to determine the energy balance components of the tree canopy. These measurements were made in October (end of the rainy season) and December (dry season) in 1997, from 8:00 to 17:00 LST. TRP showed a unimodal pattern during the day. Mean daily transpiration was higher at the end of the rainy season (1506 g m–2 d–1) than in the begining of the dry season (972 g m–2 d–1) with maxima rates of 0.075 and 0.046 g m–2 s–1, respectively. During the rainy season net radiation (QN) was mainly dissipated by latent (QE) and sensible (QH) heat, 60 and 34 %, respectively. Latent heat increased in the day up to 184 W m–2. QN was dissipated by QH and QE by 75 and 25%, respectively, and QH had a maximum hourly value of 298 W m–2 during the day (8:00-17:00 LST) in the dry season. Seasonal differences in QE and QH were probably due to differences of water availability. Heat storage of the tree hedgerow canopy was found to be a negligible component of the energy balance in both seasons. Actual transpiration of the system was always lower than transpiration at equilibrium. This was probably due to a low water availability in the substratum, a high atmospheric evaporative demand and an effective stomatal control. Because the tree hedgerow was completely surrounded by paved areas and wind was coming from a drier side, it is possible that transpiration rates were affected by advection probably supressing TRP.  相似文献

Fox squirrels in an urban environment had an average litter size of 2.83 (95% CI 2.5, 3.16) which was similar to rural populations. Nonetheless, the proportion of squirrels reproductively active during the summer/fall breeding season (0.73) and annually (spring + summer/fall) was higher (1.23) than previously recorded for non-manipulated rural populations. The average monthly survival rate () of urban juvenile fox squirrels during the first 14 weeks of life was higher than reported for adult populations in the area. High rates of reproduction and juvenile survival yielded high juvenile to adult ratios (juveniles/adults) averaging 0.44. Retention of juveniles after 6 months (15%) was significantly less (χ 2 = 7.24, p = 0.0071) than adults/subadults (40%). Results suggest that the urban environment provides quality habitat for fox squirrels and fox squirrels in urban environments have the potential to be a source population for surrounding suburban and rural environments.  相似文献

The soil seed bank was studied in two deciduous forests in Bronx (New York City), NY. The purpose of this study was to determine how the biotic andabiotic differences between urban and rural forests arereflected in urban forest seed banks. Soil samples werecollected in two consecutive years and monitored for emergencein the greenhouse over two years. In 1993, the mean number ofemergents ranged from 4636 to 5373 m-2 (excluding ferns), or from 6972 to 9651 m-2 (including ferns). In 1994, the mean number of emergents ranged from 1656 to 2013 m-2 (excluding ferns), or from 5019 to 5992 m-2 (including ferns). Graminoids and fernscombined accounted for approximately 70% of all emergents eachyear. Three taxa, Rubus spp., Betula lenta, and Liriodendron tulipifera, comprised 60–80% of the woody emergents and were theonly woody taxa to exhibit delayed germination. A substantialnumber of forbs, graminoids and ferns (15–50%) exhibiteddelayed germination. The nonnative woody species Ailanthusaltissima, Morus alba, and Celastrus orbiculatus were absentfrom the aboveground vegetation of some forest plots yet werepresent at low densities in the seed bank. A greater meandensity of emergents and the presence of nonnative species arethe main differences between the seed banks of these urbanforests and those reported for similar nonurban forests in thisregion.  相似文献

Urban open spaces are highly valued for their contribution to the quality of life in the cities [Tenkel (1963). Cities and space: The future use of urban land. Baltimore:Johns Hopkins Press; Burgess, Harrison and Limb (1998). Urban Studies, 25, 455–473; Madanipour (1999). Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design, 26, 879–891]. Third world cities, for example, Chiang Mai (Thailand), are no exception with regard to the role of urban open space in achieving such a goal [Tantayanusorn (2003). Unpublished doctoral thesis. Melbourne:Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology]. However, the provision of urban open space as a social public facility is coming low in priority in comparison to other market-demanded facilities in the form of roads, car parks, clean water, electricity and the like. Such a fact was corroborated by a study conceived by Thailand's Social Research Institute (1996) which reveals that 73% of Chiang Mai population wanted more public open space. This paper aims at exploring the revitalization of existing traditional open spaces (kuang)—which is usually categorized as ‘religious land’, hence it is a religious property—in Chiang Mai as an intermediate strategy in providing the much needed public open space. In doing so, the physical and cultural characteristics of kuang have to be elaborated, while at the same time the local aspirations on urban open space were canvassed. The combined analysis of those two inquiries resulted in a proposal of kuang wat—a variance of kuang—utilization as an agent of urban open space provision in the project of achieving quality of urban life in Thai city of Chiang Mai.  相似文献

Craven's conjecture says that 2 n–1 is the maximum number of linear orders on {1, 2,...n} that simultaneously satisfy certain restrictions on three-element subsets of {1, 2,...n}. This is true for n=3, but the maximum exceeds 2 n–1 for n4. There is a set of nine linear orders on {1, 2, 3, 4} that satisfy the restrictions. As n gets large, the ratio of the size of the maximum satisfying set to 2 n–1 approaches infinity.  相似文献

Background: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the elderly is high. Serum cystatin C is an accurate marker of kidney function and it also has prognostic utility in CKD patients. The aim of our study was to determine the prediction of serum cystatin C and other markers of kidney function on long-term survival in elderly CKD patients.

Methods: Fifty eight adult Caucasian patients, older than 65 years, without known malignancy, thyroid disease and/or not on steroid therapy were enrolled in the study. In each patient, 51CrEDTA clearance, serum creatinine, serum cystatin C, and estimated glomerular filtration rate using different equations were determined on the same day and patients were then followed for 11 years or until their death.

Results: The means are as follows: 51CrEDTA clearance 53.3?±?17.4?ml/min/1.73?m2, serum creatinine 1.62?±?0.5?mg/dl, serum cystatin C 1.79?±?0.5?mg/l, Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) creatinine equation 40.1?±?14?ml/min/1.73?m2, Berlin Initiative Study 2 (BIS2) equation 38.9?±?10.7?ml/min/1.73?m2, full age spectrum (FAS) creatinine equation 43.8?±?13.8?ml/min/1.73?m2, FAS cystatin C equation 40.1?±?11.7?ml/min/1.73?m2. In the follow up period, 47 (81%) patients died. Cox regression analysis showed different hazard ratios (HRs) for death: for 51CrEDTA clearance HR 1.022 (95% CI 1.004–1.042; p?=?.015), serum creatinine HR 1.013 (95% CI 1.006–1.019; p?=?.001), serum cystatin C HR 2.028 (95% CI 1.267–3.241; p?=?.003), CKD-EPI creatinine equation HR 1.048 (95% CI 1.019–1.076; p?=?.001), BIS2 equation HR 1.055 (95% CI 1.021–1.088; p?=?.001), FAS creatinine equation HR 1.046 (95% CI 1.017–1.074; p?=?.001), FAS cystatin C equation HR 1.039 (95% CI 1.010–1.071; p?=?.009).

Conclusions: Our results showed the highest HR for serum cystatin C among kidney function markers for prediction of outcome in elderly CKD patients.  相似文献

The seed bank of a restored tidal freshwater marsh in Washington,DC   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The species composition of seed banks may be a useful indicator of vegetation structure and dynamics, but seed bank studies have rarely been applied to monitoring of wetland restoration projects. We studied the seed banks and vegetation of three distinct sites within a restored tidal freshwater marsh and of two nearby natural marsh sites. Surface soil samples were collected and subjected to flooded and nonflooded conditions in a greenhouse for enumeration of emerging seedlings. Percent coverage of vegetation was estimated in permanent 1-m2 plots at each soil sampling location.Species composition of the seed bank and vegetation differed considerably; only 43% of the species observed were common to both. The seed bank of restored marsh sites had higher species richness and seed density than the natural marsh sites, but both had similar species diversity. Annual species were more important in the seed bank and less important in the vegetation of restored sites than reference sites. Flooding significantly reduced the species richness, diversity, and density of emerging seedlings. Most species planted at the site were rare in the seed bank, with Leersia oryzoides being an important exception. Other species abundant in the seed bank included Cyperus odoratus, Juncus effusus, and the nonindigenous Lythrum salicaria. A possible mechanism explaining the higher densities of seeds in restored areas is that ruderal vegetation colonized the restoration site, reproduced, and set seed shortly following placement of dredge material. Perennial species subsequently colonized and were planted, and expanded to reduce the abundance of annuals in restored marsh vegetation. Our study suggests that the plant regeneration dynamics of the restored marsh sites are considerably different from those of natural marshes. Additionally, we suggest that seed bank studies are a useful technique for assessing the community structure and vegetation dynamics of restored wetlands.  相似文献

The habitat suitability index and environmental flow requirements were assessed for ten species of macroinvertebrates in a 2 km length section of the urban Boti? creek (average flow 0.4 m3 s?1) in Prague. Boti? creek has been affected by two combined sewer overflows (CSO). Spring, summer and fall seasonal environmental flow requirements were identified using the Physical HABitat SIMulation System (PHABSIM) approach for the whole macroinvertebrate community: Spring – optimal flow 0.32–0.38 m3 s?1, minimal flow 0.20–0.21 m3 s?1 and maximal acceptable flow 0.91–0.93 m3 s?1; Summer - optimal flow 0.42–0.45 m3 s?1, minimal flow 0.19–0.21 m3 s?1 and maximal acceptable flow 0.95–1.00 m3 s?1; Fall - optimal flow 0.38–0.48 m3 s?1, minimal flow 0.22–0.23 m3 s?1 and maximal acceptable flow 0.95–0.98 m3 s?1. The seasonal variability of environmental flow for all three categories is approximately 10%. Environmental flow requirements of the studied species and their life stages vary with depth, velocity and bottom substratum. Due to inflow from the CSOs, the optimal and maximal acceptable flow are not maintained and the maximal flow is exceeded by more than twice its value. Although the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM) was primarily designed for large impounded rivers, the study proved its applicability in small streams affected by urbanization and urban drainage.  相似文献

This paper generalizes the result of Le Breton and Salles (1990) about stable set (far-sighted core of order 1) for voting games to far-sighted core of arbitrary order. Let m be the number of alternatives, n be the number of voters and G(n,k) be a proper symmetric simple game in which the size of a winning coalition is greater or equal to k. It is shown that the far-sighted core of order d for G(n,k) is nonempty for all preference profiles and for all n and k with n/(nk)=v 1 iff m(d+1)(v–1).This paper is part of my dissertation. The objective of this study was to measure bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged men with and without the metabolic syndrome according to the International diabetes federation (IDF) definition from 2005. We studied 80 men (mean age: 51.9 ± 9.0 y, mean body mass index (BMI): 32.0 ± 1.7 kg/m2) with and 92 men without the metabolic syndrome (mean age: 52.6 ± 15.1 y, mean BMI: 24.9 ± 2.8 kg/m2). Height (cm), weight (kg), waist circumference (cm) and blood pressure were measured. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and blood lipids were determined. BMD at the lumbar spine and total hip was measured by dual X-ray absorptiometry on a Hologic QDR 4500 bone densitometer. In men around 59.3% had a waist circumference > 94 cm (abdominal obesity). Among them 58.7% showed abnormal BP values. Around 30.7% had FPG ≥ 5.6 mmol/L and 22.7% had low high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and 36.6% had hypertriglyceridemia. In men with the metabolic syndrome, mean lumbar spine BMD was 0.986 ± 0.210 g/cm2 and total hip BMD – 1.012 ± 0.209 g/cm2. The corresponding values in men without this syndrome were 0.934 ± 0.179 g/cm2 and 0.894 ± 0.189 g/cm2, respectively. The inter-group BMD difference reached statistical significance only at the hip (p = 0.039). Respectively, the prevalence of osteoporosis at the central sites was significantly higher in men without the metabolic syndrome (MS) (13.2 versus 20.8%, p = 0.03). Our data confirmed the trend for higher BMD in the studied men with the metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

This article explores the rhetorical strategies used within The Ladder magazine to legitimate its producers, and by extension all lesbians, as participants in the public dialogue regarding the problem of homosexuality. The Ladder was the first lesbian-produced, nationally distributed magazine in the United States, publishing continuously from 1956 through 1972. Unlike early publications by male homophile groups, the producers of The Ladder had two delegitimating statuses to overcome in order to establish legitimacy–their stigmatized sexuality and their delegitimated gender. This article examines the ways that gender expectations experienced by women during the magazine's early years of publication shaped and constrained the discursive practices within The Ladder in its quest for legitimation. Three rhetorical strategies are analyzed: normalization (constructing the lesbian as heterosexual woman), status elevation (the lesbian as man), and emphatic individualism (the lesbian as idealized citizen).  相似文献

Rainfall interception by Santa Monica's municipal urban forest   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
Effects of urban forests on rainfall interception and runoff reduction have been conceptualized, but not well quantified. In this study rainfall interception by street and park trees in Santa Monica, California is simulated. A mass and energy balance rainfall interception model is used to simulate rainfall interception processes (e.g., gross precipitation, free throughfall, canopy drip, stemflow, and evaporation). Annual rainfall interception by the 29,299 street and park trees was 193,168 m3 (6.6 m3/tree), or 1.6% of total precipitation. The annual value of avoided stormwater treatment and flood control costs associated with reduced runoff was $110,890 ($3.60/tree). Interception rate varied with tree species and sizes. Rainfall interception ranged from 15.3% (0.8 m3/tree) for a small Jacaranda mimosifolia (3.5 cm diameter at breast height) to 66.5% (20.8 m3/tree) for a mature Tristania conferta (38.1 cm). In a 25-year storm, interception by all street and park trees was 12,139.5 m3 (0.4%), each tree yielding $0.60 (0.4 m3/tree) in avoided flood control costs. Rainfall interception varied seasonally, averaging 14.8% during a 21.7 mm winter storm and 79.5% during a 20.3 mm summer storm for a large, deciduous Platanus acerifolia tree. Effects of differences in temporal precipitation patterns, tree population traits, and pruning practices on interception in Santa Monica, Modesto, and Sacramento, California are described.  相似文献

Detecting the scales at which birds respond to structure in urban landscapes   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
Little empirical information exists about how birds respond to urban landscape structure across multiple scales. We explored how the variation in percent tree canopy cover, at four different scales, affected the abundance of bird species across various urban sites in North America. Bird counts were derived from previous studies, and tree patches were measured from aerial photographs that represented areas of 0.2 km2, 1.5 km2, 25.0 km2, and 85.0 km2. At each of the four areas, we conducted regressions between bird counts and percent cover of various tree patch sizes. From these analyses, we determined the area (called the best prediction area—BPA) and the patch size (called the best patch size—BPS) that accounted for a significant amount of the variation in bird counts, beyond the variation accounted for by these parameters measured at other scales. BPA and BPS were calculated primarily to take into account the high degree of collinearity that existed among the amount of tree canopy cover measured across the four scales. We calculated BPA and BPS values for a variety of bird species and ascertained whether larger species had relatively larger BPS and BPA values. In the spring, middle-sized to large birds (16.6 g–184.0 g) had relatively larger BPS values than did smaller birds (3.2 g–16.5 g), but in the summer, the largest birds (61.7 g–576.0 g) had small BPS values. Spring BPA values showed a similar result but summer BPA values did not. A majority of birds of all sizes had summer BPA values at the finer scales of 0.2 km2 and 1.5 km2. Overall, body size was an approximate predictor of the area and patch size at which a species responds to trees in a landscape, but many exceptions did occur. These exceptions could be related to a variety of factors, one being the difficulty in relating human-biased measurements to avian measurements of a landscape. The method described in this study will help researchers design multi-scale studies to address the effect of landscape pattern on different animal species.  相似文献

Abstract

Objectives: We examined the prevalence of low testosterone (LT) in the subset of men in the Proscar Long-term Efficacy and Safety Study (PLESS) who had serum total testosterone (TT) measured at baseline.

Methods: PLESS enrolled 3040 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Of these men, 299 had TT and body mass index (BMI) measurements at baseline. Patients were classified as having LT if their baseline TT was <300?ng/dl.

Results: Of the 299 PLESS patients with baseline TT and BMI measurements, 65 (21.7%) had LT. The prevalence of LT increased with increasing BMI, occurring in 8/78 (10.3%) normal weight patients (baseline BMI <25?kg/m2), 35/160 (21.9%) overweight patients (baseline BMI ≥25–<30?kg/m2), and 22/61 (36.1%) obese patients (baseline BMI ≥30?kg/m2).

Conclusions: LT was observed in more than one in five PLESS patients with baseline TT and BMI measurements. The prevalence of LT increased with increasing BMI – more than one in three obese PLESS patients with baseline TT measurements had LT.  相似文献

Tidal freshwater marshes have diverse plant communities that vary spatially and temporally due to hydrology, animal activity, and other factors. Development of urban centers along rivers of the U.S. Atlantic coast has reduced the historic extent and quality of these and other coastal wetlands. Because the vegetation of these wetlands is more complex than that of salt and brackish marshes (where restoration of vegetation typical of natural systems has sometimes been successful), restoration of tidal freshwater marsh vegetation is likely to be more difficult, particularly in urban areas. Watershed urbanization alters hydrology, sediment load, propagule availability and composition, nutrient status, and other variables that together create an environment different from that of wetlands in less developed areas, possibly precluding restoration of typical marsh vegetation. Tidal freshwater wetlands were historically extensive along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, but most of these were lost due to filling, dredging, or hydrologic alteration. Over the last decade, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has implemented projects designed to restore tidal freshwater wetlands along the Anacostia, which involved increasing elevation with dredged river sediment and planting native vegetation. To illustrate some of the mechanisms affecting vegetation development in restored tidal freshwater marshes in urban areas, I present a case study on one of these wetlands, Kingman Marsh, that also includes research at another restored wetland and two natural reference sites. Studies by my research groups indicate that the restored wetlands undergo essentially a planting-modified process of primary succession. Low densities of seeds are initially present in the substrate, and prolific seed dispersal into the restored sites results in high initial plant diversity comprised of plantings and ruderal (i.e. weedy) natives and exotics. Seed banks develop rapidly at the restored sites, probably due to colonization and early reproduction by ruderal species. Hydrology and disturbance by non-native animals (including resident Canada goose) are important variables controlling establishment of vegetation in these systems. Recent literature and the case study indicate that the environmental conditions of urban settings impose constraints in restored wetlands that result in plant communities more like those of urban natural wetlands than those of wetlands in less urbanized watersheds. This suggests that rather than design wetland restoration projects with the goal of creating pristine wetland vegetation, restorationists must identify, accept, and if possible capitalize on the ecological constraints of the urban environment in setting achievable and desirable restoration goals.  相似文献
