This study used data from the National Survey of American Life to investigate the use of professional services and informal
support among African Americans, black Caribbeans, and non-Hispanic whites. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine
the association of race and perceived discrimination with the use of professional services only, informal support only, both
professional services and informal support, or no help at all. Fifty-one percent of the sample used both professional services
and informal support, 16% relied on professional services only, 20% used informal support only, and 13% did not seek help.
Before controlling for other factors, African Americans and black Caribbeans were significantly less likely to receive either
professional or informal help compared with whites. When everyday racial discrimination was included, racial differences in
not seeking help were no longer significant. Household income also influenced the relationship between race and help-seeking.
Other factors significantly associated with help-seeking include age, gender, education, employment status, insurance coverage,
type and severity of disorder, and subjective closeness to family and friends. The association of these factors and implication
of the findings for future research and mental health service delivery will be discussed. 相似文献

This study identifies the characteristics of eligible African Americans who are not receiving food stamps. Secondary analysis
of the American Community Survey focused on 14,443 African American citizens aged 18 and over who were living below the poverty
line. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were used to compare the 6,558 recipients of food stamps with the 7,885 non-recipients.
Less than half of impoverished African American adults used food stamps in the previous year. Food stamp use was higher among
females, younger respondents, and those who had not completed high school. FSP participation was associated with co-residing
with children, receiving welfare benefits and reports of functional limitations. This study can inform food security activism
and improved outreach to impoverished African Americans. 相似文献

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States, and compared to other racial and ethnic groups, Blacks between the ages of 45 and 65 have the highest likelihood of dying from heart disease. Nevertheless, relatively little is known about intragroup variation among the US Black population. In this study, utilizing a nationally representative sample of Black Americans, we examine the relationship between heart trouble and racial group identity for two groups of Blacks: African Americans and Caribbean Blacks. We include two measures of racial group identity: closeness to other Blacks and Black group evaluation. Our results reveal three important patterns. First, closeness to other Blacks is suppressed by Black group evaluation. Second, at low levels of closeness to other Blacks, there is little difference between African Americans and Caribbean Blacks in the probability of heart trouble. However, as closeness to other Blacks increases, the probability of heart trouble increases for African Americans, but decreases for Caribbean Blacks. Finally, with respect to positive Black group evaluation, both African Americans and Caribbean Blacks benefit and experience a lower probability of heart trouble. 相似文献

This study investigated the influence of a community health worker (CHW) diabetes lifestyle intervention on mental health outcomes. Our study was guided by the principles of community-based participatory research. Data were collected from 164 African American (N = 94) and Hispanic adults (N = 70) participating in a randomized, 6-month delayed intervention group design for improving glycemic control. The intervention time periods were baseline to 6 months for the treatment group and 6–12 months for the delayed group. Linear mixed models were used to conduct longitudinal analyses of the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) scales. In the model adjusted for demographics, the PAID dropped significantly from pre-intervention to post-intervention within both the treatment and delayed groups (p < 0.05) with an average intervention effect of ?6.4 (p < 0.01). The PAID dropped even further within the immediate group from 6 to 12 months. Although the PHQ did not change significantly, the PHQ-2 had an average intervention effect of ?0.3 (p < 0.05) in the model adjusted for demographics. This study contributes to an understanding of how a CHW-led diabetes intervention can result in positive mental health outcomes for Latinos and African Americans with Type 2 diabetes. It also highlights the importance of further exploring what factors may contribute to racial/ethnic variation in mental health outcomes for African Americans and Latinos with diabetes and the role CHWs can play. 相似文献

Though gender, racial, and ethnic disparities in health in the United States are well documented, it is less clear how these
factors intersect to produce patterns of mental health outcomes among men. This study examined the presence of father figures
in the lives of African American, Caribbean black and non-Hispanic white American males until the age of 16; assessed the
current socio-demographic factors of these men as adults; and explored whether these factors lead to variations in mental
health outcomes. Regression models were used to examine the correlates of socio-demographic, psychosocial, and retrospective
father figure measures for depressive symptoms and non-specific psychological distress among African American (n = 999), Caribbean black (n = 506), and non-Hispanic white men (n = 193) from the National Survey of American Life. Findings revealed racial and ethnic group differences by age, employment
status, education, and household income on depressive symptoms (measured using the CES-D scale) and non-specific psychological
distress (using the Kessler-6 scale). Findings suggested that being raised by a grandfather placed both African American and
Caribbean black men at greater risk for depressive symptoms and non-specific psychological distress under certain socio-demographic
conditions. This study is unique in that it considers the influence of father figures on the mental health outcomes of adult
males across three racial and ethnic groups. We conclude with a discussion of the implications for future mental health research
and practice with men of color. 相似文献

The religious and the political intertwine in all sectarian conflicts and the violent conflagration in Syria is no exception. However, sectarianism as an explanatory paradigm is extremely limited; it provides a monolithic reading of a complex phenomenon with a well-established historical pedigree. This paper traces the manifestation of the sectarian dimensions of the conflict, following the development of the heterodox Alawi community from a marginalized sect to its ascendance as Syria's ruling class. It focuses on how sectarian identity has constantly been exploited by hegemonic powers such as the Sunni Ottomans, the French Colonisers and, most recently, the Asad regime. The paper suggests that the only escape from the sectarian minefield is the entrenchment of a strong Syrian national identity within the framework of equal citizenship, pluralistic democracy and the protection of minority rights. This could potentially limit the interference of outside parties, but such an outcome is over-optimistic at the current juncture since vested interests outweigh the interests of internal peace and stability. 相似文献

The current study examined the unique effects of cumulative sociodemographic risk and immigrant-related stress on mental health symptoms among Mexican-origin immigrant parents and their school-age children. Further, this study tested whether the effects of cumulative sociodemographic risk and immigrant-related stress on child mental health were mediated by parent mental health. Participants included 104 Mexican-origin immigrant families. Families in the study had a child between the ages of 6 and 10 (Mage = 8.39; 61% female). Data were collected across three time points spaced 6 months apart. Immigrant-related stress was found to predict parent mental health, which in turn predicted child mental health. Cumulative sociodemographic risk did not predict parent or child mental health. Mental health symptoms generally decreased over time, but for children, change in mental health symptoms depended on parent mental health symptoms. Given the high levels of mental health symptoms among Mexican-origin parents and children, reducing a context of stress and promoting mental health interventions for Mexican-origin immigrants is critical. 相似文献

We examine if commonly used distress measures, rates of psychiatric disorders, and chronic health conditions are affected
by alternate measures of race-ethnicity for African Americans and Caribbean blacks. We examined two alternative self-identification
measures to investigate if their influence might differ. A study on national household probability sample of non-institutionalized
African Americans (n = 3,570) and blacks from Caribbean countries, who now live in the United States (n = 1,621), was conducted between February 2001 and June 2003, using a slightly modified version of the Composite International
Diagnostic Interview. The method used to measure black race and ethnicity has influence on physical and mental health outcomes.
The distributions of depressive symptoms are not affected, while the distributions of DSM IV disorders and chronic health
conditions vary by race and ethnic self-identifications among the African American and Caribbean black populations. There
are serious implications of using alternate measures of race-ethnicity on the distribution of physical and mental health morbidity
among African Americans and Caribbean blacks. The conceptualization and assessment of race-ethnicity should be carefully considered
when studying mental and physical health statuses and service needs in the American black population. 相似文献

This study examines the relationship between financial strain and depressive symptoms in later life, and potential psychosocial mediators of this relationship. Drawing on a sample of 214 low-income Latino older adults, we used structural equation modeling to test the direct effect of chronic financial strain on depressive symptomatology, and the indirect effects via social support, negative interaction, and coping styles. Findings indicated that financial strain increased the level of depressive symptoms among this sample. Avoidance and approach-related coping styles emerged as independent determinants of depressive symptoms albeit in opposite directions; higher levels of avoidance coping was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms. Contrary to previous findings on the general population, findings from the current study indicate that social support and negative interaction were not directly associated with depressive symptoms. Financial strain mediated the effect of sociocultural (nativity status, years of U.S. residence) and social status factors (age, education) on depressive symptoms. This study highlights the differential impact of financial strain and coping styles on psychological well-being, and the potential psychosocial targets of interventions for older adults with chronic health care conditions. 相似文献

Studies were conducted to assess the significance of the concept of race in interpersonal attraction and self-identification comparing African Americans and native Ghanaians. An adaptation of the Bogardus Scale (1926) was used to measure interpersonal attraction. A self-identification questionnaire developed by the principal author was used to measure self-identification. The samples consisted of 366 native Ghanaians residing in Ghana and 113 African Americans residing in Northern New Jersey. The results show that when making judgments about interpersonal attraction to different ethnic and racial groups as well as in self-identification, African American respondents attributed more psychological significance to the concept of race than Ghanaian respondents did. Racial group membership and cultural kinships were strongly related to interpersonal attraction and self-identification for African American respondents. They attributed more significance to racial group membership in judging self-identification and interpersonal attraction toward other African Americans compared with other groups. On the other hand, in judging interpersonal attraction toward other groups, African American respondents attributed more significance to cultural reference factors than racial group membership. Ghanaians perceived nationality and cultural kinships as more significant than racial group membership in their reported interpersonal attraction to groups represented in this work Ghanaian respondents did not perceive racial group membership as a significant factor in making judgments about interpersonal attraction and self-identification. 相似文献

Focus groups were conducted to appreciate the voices of Urban American Indians (UAI) who have mixed ancestries residing in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Participants (15 women and 10 men, 19–83 years of age) with a variety of Native ancestries coming
from different nations (i.e., blackfeet, blackminkwa, Cherokee, Creek, Delaware, Lakota, Powhatan, Seminole, and Shawnee)
reported to also have a Non-Native racial/ethnic ancestry such as African/black, Hispanic, and/or Caucasian/white. Specifically,
this study provided evidence about (a) the complexity and challenge of being “mixed” UAI (e.g., “living a culture” as opposed
to blood quantum in determining a personal identity) (b) the linkage of cultural identities to mental health (c) contributions
of cultural activities to identities and mental health (e.g., therapeutic and healing functions of cultural activities), and
(d) very limited urban Native-oriented mental health service (e.g., visions for Native American-centered mental health clinic
in an urban setting). Building on those UAI’s voices, this paper provides a context for the need of a culturally respectful
transformation of urban mental health system by highlighting the clinical significance of cultural identity and mental health
promotion for UAI. 相似文献

Measures of hardship have been proffered as better indicators of economic well-being than traditional measures of socioeconomic status (SES). However, there is a dearth of research on latent factor structures and measurement bias in items assessing hardship across socio-demographic characteristics, especially among older adults. As such, the purpose of this study was to determine the factor structure of items measuring hardship in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and to determine measurement bias across socio-demographic groups (i.e., race/ethnicity, gender, and age). The participants were HRS subjects who completed an additional psychosocial survey (N = 3074). The results revealed a single latent factor for hardship (comparative fit index = 0.99, root mean square error of approximation = 0.02) using confirmatory factor analysis on eight items in the HRS. The multiple indicator, multiple causes (MIMIC) model was used to determine measurement bias in the items due to socio-demographic characteristics. Compared to white respondents, black respondents were more likely to endorse items of financial dissatisfaction (Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.19, 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.43, 3.35), while Latino respondents were more likely to endorse food insecurity (OR = 2.78, 95 % CI = 1.60, 4.83); and older individuals (age 65 and older) were less likely to endorse having moved to a worse residence/neighborhood (OR = 0.32, CI = 0.18, 0.57) and being unemployed (OR = 0.28, CI = 0.20, 0.38). These results indicate that there is differential item functioning for specific measures of hardship suggesting that there are differences observed for the measurement of hardship for these items across racial/ethnic and age groups. 相似文献

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is commonly thought of as a disorder of White females. Despite evidence indicating similar
prevalence rates across races and genders, no study has examined the experience of BPD among ethnic minorities and how this
differs from Whites. The affective and behavioral symptoms of BPD were studied in 17 African Americans and 27 White Americans
with the disorder. Results indicated that African Americans experience greater affective intensity and emotional dysregulation,
fewer self-harming behaviors, and more thoughts of interpersonal aggression than Whites. Differences in affective symptoms
were accounted for by group differences in substance use and receipt of inpatient services, whereas differences in behavioral
symptomatology persisted after adjusting for potential confounders. These findings suggest that not only is BPD not a disorder
exclusive to White females, but that the experience of the disorder may differ substantially across races. Implications for
future research and directions for developing culturally relevant treatments are discussed. 相似文献

This study examined reciprocal support networks involving extended family, friends and church members among African Americans. Our analysis examined specific patterns of reciprocal support (i.e., received only, gave only, both gave and received, neither gave or received), as well as network characteristics (i.e., contact and subjective closeness) as correlates of reciprocal support. The analysis is based on the African American subsample of the National Survey of American Life. Overall, our findings indicate that African Americans are very involved in reciprocal support networks with their extended family, friends and church members. Respondents were most extensively involved in reciprocal supports with extended family members, followed closely by friends and church networks. Network characteristics (i.e., contact and subjective closeness) were significantly and consistently associated with involvement with reciprocal support exchanges for all three networks. These and other findings are discussed in detail. This study complements previous work on the complementary roles of family, friend and congregational support networks, as well as studies of racial differences in informal support networks. 相似文献

Any work toward racial equity in America will need to include strengthening the black–Latino coalition. While there are political
and social tensions between these groups, much of the underlying issue involves real and perceived perceptions of economic
competition, particularly the notion that immigrant Latinos undercut African American wages. We note that there is some evidence
that immigrants pull down incomes of US-born unskilled workers—both black and Latino. We argue, however, that highly restrictive
immigration policy will have minimal effects and erode collective political power; a superior alternative is working together
to reduce high school dropout rates, raise the minimum wage, reintegrate ex-offenders, rigorously enforce antidiscrimination
law, promote comprehensive immigration reform, and pursue community development. Such an analysis is gaining ground in grassroots
efforts to build trust and forge policy coalitions between Latinos and African Americans. 相似文献

Processes of migration, diaspora and exile offer diverse and complex environments for the renegotiation of social identities. Immigrants and refugees must not only adapt to the material circumstances of uprooting but must also confront, maintain or recreate a sense of self, often in contexts which are vastly different and fraught with constraints, in which they are removed from their familiar social networks and in which their previous identities may be of little meaning or relevance to the new society. In confronting an altered social status and radically different circumstances, individuals may be required to come to terms with a new or reconstructed sense of ethnic or national identity. This process is not only a personal one but involves affiliations with others who engage in similar interpretations and adaptive strategies and enmity toward those who do not' Field, 1994: 432 . Such a process can be seen as part of the phenomenon of transnationalism, the process by which immigrants forge and sustain multi-stranded social relations that link together their societies of origin and settlement' Basch et al., 1994: 7 . One important aspect of transnationalism is the role that immigrants and refugees play in political activities in both their countries of origin and residence, and their political commitment often has important implications for their sense of self, particularly when those political activities are directed towards the creation of a new homeland for oppressed minorities. This paper examines the role played by diaspora intellectuals in promoting a nationalist discourse which calls for the creation of an independent state for the Oromo, who constitute one of the largest ethnic populations in Africa and the manner in which their participation in such discursive activities allow them to engage in a reconstruction of their own identities and in the shaping of national and personal senses of the self. 相似文献
