Elder Abuse and Child Abuse:

Elder abuse has been compared with other forms of intrafamilial violence. Despite obvious age and status differences, elder parents and young children exhibit similarities that make the linking of elder and child abuse compelling. However, difference in the nature of child-to-parent and parent-to-child relations and in the social and legal status of adulthood versus childhood argue against a too facile linking of the two problems. This paper suggests dimensions relevant to a comparison of intergenerational physical abuse of elder parents and young children.     

Disability and Abuse in Relation to Substance Abuse

Abstract

This analysis reviewed five years of a state's substance abuse treatment admissions and discharges in order to identify specific patterns among persons who had a disability. Using a series of group comparisons, Chi-squares, and logistic regressions, specific patterns of violence and abuse to this population were identified. Results indicate that persons who had a disability and abused substances were more likely to be victimized by physical abuse and domestic violence when compared with their peers without a disability. A person with a disability had about one-half to one-third the odds of receiving long-term residential, short-term residential and intensive outpatient care when compared with persons without a disability.     

Employment and the Risk of Domestic Abuse Among Low‐Income Women

This paper uses data from 2 randomized evaluations of welfare‐to‐work programs—the Minnesota Family Investment Program and the National Evaluation of Welfare‐to‐Work Strategies—to estimate the effect of employment on domestic abuse among low‐income single mothers. Unique to our analysis is the application of a 2‐stage least squares method, in which random assignment enables us to control for omitted characteristics that might otherwise confound the association between employment and domestic abuse. We find that increased maternal employment decreases subsequent reports of domestic abuse in both studies. In the Minnesota Family Investment Program—a program with an enhanced income disregard that allowed welfare mothers to keep a portion of their welfare income as earnings rose—an increase in household incomes appears to have contributed to reductions in reports of domestic abuse.     

Abuse and disabled children: hidden needs…?

In order to look at current practices in recording the abuse of disabled children, a questionnaire was sent out to the 121 Chairs of the Area Child Protection Committees in the United Kingdom. Of the 73 responders, over 50% claimed to identify the disability of an abused child but only 10% could given an actual figure. The lack of statistical evidence made it impossible to calculate anything except an approximation of the rate of abuse of disabled children. Schedules completed over a period of 1 year in two Social Services Departments for all disabled children who were conferenced for abuse showed that they were less likely to be put on the child protection register than a comparison group of non‐disabled children. Semi‐structured interviews with eight of the key workers for the disabled children revealed that they were concerned that there was a tendency ‘not to see’ the abuse of disabled children and they did not feel there was sufficient training regarding the interface between abuse and disabilities. Sexual Abuse,Fear of Abuse,and Politics

This paper explores the impact of experiencing sexual abuse, fear of sexual abuse, and knowing of someone who has experienced such abuse on individuals' political orientations and behavior. Data come from a piolt study of 240 student respondents. Findings reveal that abuse and fear of abuse are associated with increased efficacy, involvement, and participaiton. Reasons for the results are discussed as well as directions for future study.     

Elder Abuse in the United Kingdom

ABSTRACT

In recent years there has been an increased emphasis on violence and abuse within society generally. Following a focus in the United Kingdom (UK) on child abuse in the 1970s and domestic violence in the 1980s, in the 1990s the abuse and neglect of older people began to elicit concern. The initial focus of interest was of situations arising in the domestic setting. More recently, however, much needed attention has shifted to situations involving institutional settings. This paper will discuss abuse and neglect occurring in the UK. It aims to provide a brief overview of the status of current knowledge concerning abuse of older people followed by a discussion of some of the issues relating to the prevention of abuse and neglect from a UK perspective. An exploration of some of the issues involved will contribute to our understanding of abuse and neglect of older people in the UK.     

Material Abuse of the Elderly:

During the last decade, the area of elder abuse has received increasing attention from researchers, providers, advocates, and policy makers. Although studies on elder abuse indicate that misappropriation of assets is not uncommon, material abuse represents an area that has not been addressed. Using a case study approach, this article analyzes two material abuse situations. Issues raised in the case studies are used to develop criteria for appraising potential material abuse situations and offering guidelines for assessing the appropriateness of guardianship as a means of protecting victims of material abuse.     

Fiduciary Abuse of the Elderly:

Fiduciary abuse of the elderly is an increasingly recognized social problem. While all seniors are potential victims, the oldest members of society are at greater risk. This article identifies those at risk, profiles those most likely to commit financial abuse, describes indicators of abuse, defines commonly encountered crimes, and explains the roles of service professionals and the criminal justice system in responding to incidents of financial abuse.     

Elder Abuse in the UK:

This article evaluates the range of existing legal responses that may be utilized in cases of elder abuse in the UK. Because no single piece of applicable protective legislation exists, three possible levels of intervention have been identified: preventive measures, private law initiatives, and state intervention. In answer to the criticism of existing law, the Law Commission has published proposals for legal reform drawing on the child protection model. Questions are raised regarding the suitability of the approach given the intrinsic social and legal differences between children and adults.     

Ritual Child Abuse

The phenomenon of ritualistic child abuse is explored. The author proposes definitions for "ritualistic child abuse" and "cult ritualistic child abuse," and articulates the questions that must be addressed in determining the scope of the problem and evaluating current assumptions about this issue. Questions relating to the issues of the credibility of the reports of child and adult victims are also discussed.     

Elder Abuse:

Elder abuse in Québec has been defined as a social problem since the late 70s. Many changes in policies, social practices, and laws are proposed as scientific knowledge is still growing. Using research methodology in criminology, elder abuse is defined and the impact of violence and neglect towards elders in the community, family and nursing home settings investigated. This paper critically examines the current knowledge gained through research on elder abuse in Québec and offers suggestions for future progress on this issue.     

Abuse of trust

Abstract

Following a summary of proposed changes to Community Care in the United Kingdom, this paper focuses on case management as a key component of social work skill. Associations between marketplace interaction and the relationship between caseness and care are followed by an analysis of issues and psychological defenses to which case management is liable. These are addressed at the interpersonal level and in terms of boundaries between organizational systems. A hypothesis is proposed that case management is particularly susceptible to conflicts around issues of dependence, independence and interdependence. Finally, initial suggestions are made regarding the role that a psychodynamic understanding can play in addressing these problems.
