The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate and explain how a Norwegian voluntary, faith-based organization—the Gospel Centre
of Norway (Pinsevennenes Evangeliesenter)—successfully substituted a “network” for “market” strategy vis-à-vis the public sector in order to obtain organizational
legitimacy and financial security. During the first decade of its existence it obtained a unique position in its relationship
with the state, as a separate item in the budget of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. The organization operates in
the field of substance abuse rehabilitation, i.e., in a situation where instrumental effectiveness is difficult to assess.
In such a situation ritual or other institutional criteria may replace effectiveness criteria and impression management is
shown to be a successful strategy. Attention is paid to the relevant environmental conditions under which this organizational
change of strategy was successful.

This paper analyzes how ethno-racial standpoints influence the ways that genealogists negotiate and narrate biological and/or
social interpretations of family and social history. A constructivist methodological approach grounds the analysis of three
family genealogists who all have African and European lineages, but differ in their current ethno-racial identities. These
case studies serve as exemplars of how individuals negotiate the racial formation processes of past and present. I suggest
that there is reflexive and political potential in bio-based genealogy to transform our current racial “common sense.” The
practice of genealogy reveals tacit social and biological assumptions that can serve as points of leverage for progressive
social change, and yet vary by standpoint. In the context of the iconic gene we must be vigilant about the threat of genetic
essentialism, yet the threat is mitigated by the simultaneous democratization of our knowledge and control over origin stories.

In the 1970s, as children of Holocaust survivors reached adulthood, many began to excavate, piece together, and re-fashion
their fractured family histories. This movement achieved momentum in the 1980s and 1990s, as the so-called “second generation”
moved into middle age. Drawing from data gleaned from participant observation on a listserv for children of survivors and
from interviews, I argue that those who engage in post-Holocaust genealogy are searching for coherent narratives that place
their own origin in the context of the families into which they were born. By seeking, borrowing from and selectively appropriating
traces of the past, they are using them as raw material in the production of new stories about the past and, by implication,
the present.

This paper discusses the situation in Greece as regards the introduction of co-modal transport services. It starts with basic
definitions of “co-modality” and what it means for Greece. It then presents the results of a demand data collection and analysis
exercise which resulted in the first ever estimates of the “potential” for road/rail co-modal transport in Greece today and
in 2015. Based on these forecasts it seems that at least for two thickly populated areas of the country (i.e. Athens and Thessaloniki)
this demand can be as high as 40% of the total freight flows. The paper then goes on to examine the means by which the responsible
authorities can “induce” co-modal services in the country. It does this by examining the policies necessary, the infrastructure
(both hard and “soft”), the necessary actions and incentives for the development of a “co-modal” market, and the necessary
training––education actions for human resource development. The overall conclusion is that unless specific actions are taken
on behalf of the government (such as those mentioned in the paper) the “land” based co-modal transport has no future in Greece.

Researchers have identified urban ecology as a new field integrating social and ecological science. Critics have portrayed
the field as under-theorized with negative implications for research and urban environmental planning. Unprecedented urbanization
and historical bias against research integrating social and ecological systems are identified as driving this deficit. Researchers
have called for new integrative approaches to address this issue. In response, this paper applies ecology’s analytic framework
of “patch dynamics”, Kuhn’s concept of “normal science” and Mazoyer and Roudart’s “evolutionary series” to demographic data
and historical texts to perform an analysis of interdisciplinary contributions to theory applicable in the field of urban
ecology. The subsequent exploration reveals a rich history of interdisciplinary inquiry along the nature/society divide. The
paper concludes that these “largely ignored” contributions offer urban ecology the opportunity to claim much broader depth
as a field gaining access to precedents and innovations accomplished during the field’s early theoretical development. Drawing
upon this history, a framework for ecological urban development is suggested to inform and assist contemporary research in
urban ecology and planning.

In this paper, the authors analyze different forms of interface between the government and third sector organizations in Québec.
In order to do so, they studied relationships in eight different fields of activity: homeless youth services, housing for
intellectually deficient people, support organizations for natural caregivers, community leisure centers, community housing
for the elderly, daycare centers, social economy organizations for domestic assistance, and services specializing in employment
for handicapped people. Following a review of international literature on the relationship between the government and the
third sector, the paper analyzes these relationships on the basis of the typology developed by Jennifer M. Coston, which is
adapted to the Québécois context. In the eight activity sectors studied, the authors found the presence of four different
types of interface between the government and the third sector: “subcontracting,” “coexistence,” “supplementarity,” and “co-construction”
relationships.

This paper provides a multilayered analysis of how lesbian mothers and gay fathers construct their families in a social context
that has been described by Steven Seidman (2004) as “beyond the closet.” We stress how our participants’ family-building experiences are comparable to other non-biologically
related families, but distinct due to heterosexual dominance. Using in-depth qualitative interviews with 18 lesbian birth
mothers and 22 gay fathers, the authors discuss how participants navigate heterosexual dominance in institutions and in personal
interactions.

This paper considers three different conceptualizations – three politico-ideological perspectives within civil society – on global-scale economics and geopolitics. The standpoints can be termed “Global justice movements,” “Third World nationalism,” and the “Post-Washington Consensus.” These three perspectives stand in contrast to the fusion of neoliberal economics and neoconservative politics that dominates the contemporary world. The three approaches sometimes converge, but more often than not they are in conflict; as are the civil society institutions that cohere to the three different political ideologies. From the three different analyses flow different strategies, concrete campaigning tactics, and varying choices of allies. The World Social Forum provides hints of a potentially unifying approach within the global justice movements based upon the practical themes of “decommodification” and “deglobalization” (of capital). It is, however, only by facing up to the ideological divergences that the global justice movement can enhance its presence.

Since the inception of social work social workers have noted the importance of relationship in practice. More recently clinicians
and other social workers have developed the term “use of self” to indicate important aspects of the professional relationship.
How that term is defined rests on how one conceptualizes “self.” The authors suggest that from a relational perspective the
concept of self changes from the notion of self as separate and constant to self as process in interaction. They demonstrate
on a theoretical level as well as through a case example how defining self as process in interaction might affect clinical
social work practice.

“Alienation,” in the sense of disenchantment with core institutions of society, increased after the mid-1960s. Most accounts hold that the rise in alienation was uniform across all groups. This paper evaluates the hypothesis of uniform change using data from the Harris Polls. We find evidence of both short-term and long-term shifts in patterns of alienation. Blacks and low-income people are less alienated under Democratic than under Republican administrations. Over the long term, increases in alienation have been larger among women and people without a college degree.

This study investigates perceptions of workplace discrimination among racial minorities in Canada. Specifically, the study
examines how objective experiences of disadvantage and expectations for equity influence racial minorities’ perceptions of
discrimination. The results indicate that while both of these factors affect perceptions of discrimination, expectations for
equity may be especially important. Although new immigrants are among the most disadvantaged groups in the Canadian labor
market, they are less likely to perceive discrimination than longer term immigrants, who may have higher expectations for
equitable treatment. Education also increases the perception of discrimination among immigrants, perhaps due to the higher
expectations of educated immigrants. Lastly, objective income inequity is not found to be related to perceived discrimination.

This paper reviews the empirical literature on the “Government Substitution” hypothesis. We focus our attention on the sample
periods used, model specification, and econometric technique. The seminal piece on this topic is Neumann and Rissman (J Labor
Econ 2:175–192, 1984) and to date there have been less than a handful of extensions beyond this initial investigation. By
tracking the limited development of this hypothesis over time we are able to conclude that there is still an opportunity for
additional empirical exploration in this area.

Based upon an analysis of interviews from a qualitative study with twelve agency-based clinical social workers, this paper
recounts three “situational pathways” through which these workers were able to experience empathy in the process of engaging
low-income single mothers whose presenting picture involved physical aggression toward their symptomatic children who the
workers were also seeing for therapy. The paper describes and utilizes self-psychological and intersubjective concepts to
understand the therapeutic contexts that may enhance the worker’s potential for experientially understanding the client’s
viewpoint. The relevance of the findings for practice and training is discussed.

This paper explores the multiple expressions of Central American immigrant Pentecostalism in the Pico Union district of Los
Angeles. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork in three temples and informal conversations with over 30 active Pentecostals,
this paper shows that Central American immigrant Pentecostals tend to congregate on the basis of “congregational homophily,”
or shared social and cultural characteristics, especially in terms of age, marital status, presence of infirmities or ailments,
and national/regional origin. This paper also explores the ways in which Central American immigrant Pentecostals tailor their
religious practices to reflect their “congregational homophily” through the differential inclusion/exclusion of practices
such as healing, “roommating,” and formal and informal discussions of shared histories. By focusing on “congregational homophily”
and the active constructions and reconstructions of Central American immigrant Pentecostalism, we gain more insight into the
ways some Central American immigrants negotiate their lives and experiences in the increasingly fettered social, cultural,
and political topography of contemporary Los Angeles.

Top-Down Civic Projects Are Not Grassroots Associations: How The Differences Matter in Everyday Life

Research on civic associations blurs an important distinction between the unfunded, informal, ongoing associations that theorists
like de Tocqueville described versus current participatory democracy projects that are funded by the state and large nongovernmental
organizations, are open to all, and are usually short-term. Based on a long-term ethnography of youth programs in the United
States, this paper shows that entities like these, which participants and researchers alike often called “volunteer” or “civic”
groups, operate very differently from traditional civic groups. The ethnography systematically details prevalent tensions
that actors face when they try to cultivate the civic spirit in these increasingly typical organizations.

According to enthusiasts the concept of global civil society is spreading rapidly and becoming pivotal to the reconfiguring of the statist paradigm. However, critics have recently grown more numerous and outspoken in opposition to the term claiming that it is actually perpetuating statism by grafting the idea of civil society onto the global by way of an unhelpful domestic analogy. This paper examines the role the concept is playing in perpetuating/reconfiguring statism. First it summarizes current criticism by identifying three basic accusations: the ambiguity of the term, the “domestic fallacy,” and the undemocratic effects of using it. Second, these criticisms are considered in turn and it is concluded that all three points relate, ultimately, back to the failure of the critics themselves and some global civil society theorists to move beyond a state-centered framework of interpretation. In the final section it is shown how global civil society discourse is beginning to move not only the concept of “civil society” away from its state-centred historical meanings, but also how it is contributing to changing the content of the concept of “the global.”

Expressions of basic emotions (joy, sadness, anger, fear, disgust) can be recognized pan-culturally from the face and it is
assumed that these emotions can be recognized from a speaker’s voice, regardless of an individual’s culture or linguistic
ability. Here, we compared how monolingual speakers of Argentine Spanish recognize basic emotions from pseudo-utterances (“nonsense
speech”) produced in their native language and in three foreign languages (English, German, Arabic). Results indicated that
vocal expressions of basic emotions could be decoded in each language condition at accuracy levels exceeding chance, although
Spanish listeners performed significantly better overall in their native language (“in-group advantage”). Our findings argue
that the ability to understand vocally-expressed emotions in speech is partly independent of linguistic ability and involves
universal principles, although this ability is also shaped by linguistic and cultural variables.

but much attention has been given to the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the components necessary and appropriate
for a strong working alliance. The CBT approach is discussed within the framework of previously articulated five uses of selves.
A case example is presented.

Drawing data from works of political non-fiction that help to reveal the moral and sensual underpinnings of political practice,
this paper seeks to adumbrate a sensualist understanding of political engagement. After beginning with a brief discussion
of Weber’s seminal essay “Politics as a Vocation,” I then construct an ideal type of political passion with which to highlight
the inherent shortcomings that plague traditional explanations of political action. My argument is that these approaches are
all vitiated by their reliance on Chinese-box epistemology. I go on to suggest that in order to obtain a genuinely sociological
account of political engagement, one must develop methods that are true to the experiential specifics of politics while recognizing
the conditions that shape the possibility of those very experiences.
