We describe a method of calculating sharp lower and upper bounds on the expectations of arbitrary, properly centered L-statistics expressed in the Gini mean difference units of the original i.i.d. observations. Precise values of bounds are derived for the single-order statistics, their differences, and some examples of L-estimators. We also present the families of discrete distributions which attain the bounds, possibly in the limit.  相似文献

We describe a method of determining upper bounds on the variances of linear combinations of the kth records values from i.i.d. sequences, expressed in terms of variances of parent distributions. We also present conditions for which the bounds are sharp, and those for which the respective lower ones are equal to zero. A special attention is paid to the case of the kth record spacings, i.e. the differences of consecutive kth record values.  相似文献

Let Y be an observable random vector and Z be an unobserved random variable with joint density f(y, z | θ), where θ is an unknown parameter vector. Considering the problem of predicting Z based on Y, we derive Kshirsagar type lower bounds for the mean squared error of any predictor of Z. These bounds do not require the regularity conditions of Bhattacharyya bounds and hence are more widely applicable. Moreover, the new bounds are shown to be sharper than the corresponding Bhattacharyya bounds. The conditions for attaining the new lower bounds are useful for easy derivation of best unbiased predictors, which we illustrate with some examples.  相似文献

For positive-valued random variables, the paper provides a sequence of upper bounds for the harmonic mean, the ith of these bounds being exact if and only if the random variable is essentially i-valued. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of the bounds to the harmonic mean are given. The bounds have a number of applications, particularly in experimental design where they may be used to check how close a given design is to A-optimality  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a mixed compound Poisson process, that is, a random sum of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables where the number of terms is a Poisson process with random intensity. We study nonparametric estimators of the jump density by specific deconvolution methods. Firstly, assuming that the random intensity has exponential distribution with unknown expectation, we propose two types of estimators based on the observation of an i.i.d. sample. Risks bounds and adaptive procedures are provided. Then, with no assumption on the distribution of the random intensity, we propose two non‐parametric estimators of the jump density based on the joint observation of the number of jumps and the random sum of jumps. Risks bounds are provided, leading to unusual rates for one of the two estimators. The methods are implemented and compared via simulations.  相似文献

We present sharp mean–variance bounds for expectations of kth record values based on distributions coming from restricted families of distributions. These families are defined in terms of convex or star ordering with respect to generalized Pareto distribution. The bounds for expectations of kth record values from DD, DFR, DDA, and DFRA families are special cases of our results. The bounds are derived by application of the projection method.  相似文献

We study two of the classical bounds for the Bayes error P e , Lissack and Fu’s separability bounds and Bhattacharyya’s bounds, in the classification of an observation into one of the two determined distributions, under the hypothesis that the prior probability χ itself has a probability distribution. The effectiveness of this distribution can be measured in terms of the ratio of two mean values. On the other hand, a discriminant analysis-based optimal classification rule allows us to derive the posterior distribution of χ, together with the related posterior bounds of P e . In this paper, we prove a Hoeffding-like inequality for the survival function of a sum of symmetric independent identically distributed random variables, taking values in a segment [?b, b] of the reals. The symmetric case is relevant to the auditing practice and is an important case study for further investigations. The bounds as given by Hoeffding in 1963 cannot be improved upon unless we restrict the class of random variables, for instance, by assuming the law of the random variables to be symmetric with respect to their mean, which we may assume to be zero. The main result in this paper is an improvement of the Hoeffding bound for i.i.d. random variables which are bounded and have a (upper bound for the) variance by further assuming that they have a symmetric law.  相似文献

Epstein [Truncated life tests in the exponential case, Ann. Math. Statist. 25 (1954), pp. 555–564] introduced a hybrid censoring scheme (called Type-I hybrid censoring) and Chen and Bhattacharyya [Exact confidence bounds for an exponential parameter under hybrid censoring, Comm. Statist. Theory Methods 17 (1988), pp. 1857–1870] derived the exact distribution of the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) of the mean of a scaled exponential distribution based on a Type-I hybrid censored sample. Childs et al. [Exact likelihood inference based on Type-I and Type-II hybrid censored samples from the exponential distribution, Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 55 (2003), pp. 319–330] provided an alternate simpler expression for this distribution, and also developed analogous results for another hybrid censoring scheme (called Type-II hybrid censoring). The purpose of this paper is to derive the exact bivariate distribution of the MLE of the parameter vector of a two-parameter exponential model based on hybrid censored samples. The marginal distributions are derived and exact confidence bounds for the parameters are obtained. The results are also used to derive the exact distribution of the MLE of the pth quantile, as well as the corresponding confidence bounds. These exact confidence intervals are then compared with parametric bootstrap confidence intervals in terms of coverage probabilities. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the methods of inference developed here.  相似文献

We present the upper non positive bounds on the expectations of gOSs centered about the sample mean, which are based on the parent distributions with decreasing density and decreasing density on average distributions. Such bounds can be obtained only for particular cases of gOSs and they are expressed in units generated by the central absolute moments of a fixed order. The attainability conditions are also described. The method of deriving presented bounds is based on the maximization of appropriate norms over properly chosen convex sets. The paper complements the results of Bieniek [J. Statist. Plann. Inference, 2008; 138:971–981].  相似文献

We determine the sharp negative upper bounds on the differences of the small quantiles and means for the distributions from the respective families in terms of scale units generated by pth absolute central moments. This article discusses testing hypotheses and confidence regions with correct levels for the mean sojourn time of an M/M/1 queueing system. The uniformly most powerful unbiased tests for three usual hypothesis testing problems are obtained and the corresponding p values are provided. Based on the duality between hypothesis tests and confidence sets, the uniformly most accurate confidence bounds are derived. A confidence interval with correct level is proposed.  相似文献

The results of this paper are the continuation of the research presented by Bieniek [Optimal bounds for the mean of the total time on test for distributions with decreasing generalized failure rate. Statistics. 2016;50:1206–1220]. We consider the remaining total time on test after a given failure in a life test experiment. We derive sharp upper bounds on the mean of the total time on test optimal in the class of distributions with increasing generalized failure rate with respect to generalized Pareto distributions. Specific results are obtained for distributions with increasing density and increasing failure rate. We also provide exemplary numerical values of the obtained bounds and we compare them with the corresponding bounds for distributions with decreasing generalized failure rate.  相似文献

In this paper, after a synthetic comparison with respect to hazard rate ordering between sums of independent exponential random variables, we focus on the special case where one sum is identically distributed. So, for a given sum of n independent exponential random variables, we deduce the "best" Erlang-n bounds, with respect to each of the usual orderings: mean ordering, stochastic ordering, hazard rate ordering and likelihood ratio ordering.  相似文献

The paper derives bounds on the distribution of the quadratic forms Z = y H( X Γ X H)−1 y and W = y H2 I + X Γ X H)−1 y , where the elements of the M × 1 vector y and the M × N matrix X are independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) complex zero mean Normal variables, Γ is some N × N diagonal matrix with positive diagonal elements, I , is the identity, σ2 is a constant and H denotes the Hermitian transpose. The bounds are convenient for numerical work and appear to be tight for small values of M . This work has applications in digital mobile radio for a specific channel where M antennas are used to receive a signal with N interferers. This article is concerned with the comparison of P-value and Bayesian measure in point null hypothesis for the variance of Normal distribution with unknown mean. First, using fixed prior for test parameter, the posterior probability is obtained and compared with the P-value when an appropriate prior is used for the mean parameter. In the second, lower bounds of the posterior probability of H0 under a reasonable class of prior are compared with the P-value. It has been shown that even in the presence of nuisance parameters, these two approaches can lead to different results in the statistical inference.  相似文献
