The year 2000 is the 55th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan. Chinese Comfort Women victims of the War suffered physically and emotionally from the demands of Japanese armies. Though they are now elderly, these Chinese women, and the Chinese people as a whole, will never forget the barbarous crimes of the Japanese during World War Ⅱ. A Woman Headmaster of Hainan

ON February 22, 1995, the front pages of Chinese leading newspapers issued the selection results of Ten Outstanding Chinese Women. Han Yuling, headmaster of Haikou No.9 Primary School in Hainan, was one of the ten. That night, Han Yuling was restless. She thought she only did what she should, and yet she had gained so many honors including the national award for excellence in teaching, and one of the Ten National Outstanding Returned Overseas Chinese. On behalf of 600 million Chinese women, over 1,300 deputies came to Beijing to attend the Eighth Chinese Women's National Congress. According to the materials supplied by the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), 43.67 percent of the deputies to this congress were engaged in women's work; 56.33 percent were representatives from the fields of industry and agriculture, commerce, trade and finance, science and technology, education, medicine, social welfare, media, law and the army; one percent were from Taiwan; one percent were returned overseas Chinese or the family dependents of overseas Chinese. All 55 ethnicities were represented; ethnic delegates accounted for 15.5 percent of the total. The average age of these deputies was 46.

In the aftermath of the Olympic Games, we look back on the highlights for Chinese women. Outstanding performances by the athletes thrilled audiences across the country. Chinese athletes did remarkably well, winning 28 gold medals for the country; there were not a few female athletes among them, who picke up a total of 16 golds. This issue features the Chinese women gold medalists as a mark of respect and to say that we, as women ourselves, are extremely proud of them.
