THE campus of the Shanghai Middle School for Hui Nationality is very beautiful. In the middle of the campus is a round lawn and in the center of the lawn is a tall cedar. Around the lawn are the classroom buildings, students' laboratory building, the cinema and an office building. Shades of green and bright flowers are seen everywhere. Just after a spring rain, the campus appears especially fresh and pleasing to the eye. More than 400 Tibetan students are studying and living at this beautiful school. Every evening, beautiful melodies flew from a bungalow located at downtown Korla City. This is home of Patima Abdurashit, teacher with the Ounyi Art Studio of Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Patima, 52, graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing).in 1966. The Uygur violinist is now member of the Chinese Musicians' Association and member of the standing committee of the Musicians' Association of the Bayinbuleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture. Her 30-add years of career is marked with outstanding achievements and awards, and albums of her solo performances. A qualitative research project was carried out to investigate how first-year graduate students integrated their field work learning with their classroom leaning (N?=?17). The study reveals the students’ difficulty in integrating their practical learning with theoretical classroom knowledge. Using grounded theory analysis, two types of student reactions to integrating knowledge were found: role confusion and role clarity; most fit into the role confusion group. Performing supportive social work, working with involuntary clients, and the age of the client were all linked to the students’ role confusion. Implications for teaching strategies using reflective practice are discussed, as well as possible connections between beginning students’ confusion, ageism, and lack of interest in the field of aging.  相似文献

Critical reflection involves the identification of deeply seated assumptions about the social world and the individual’s connection with it; however, its scope and practice are contested. While ambivalence about its definition remains, critical reflection is described as a threshold concept in social welfare and social work education. This study investigated students’ conceptualisations of critical reflection by analysing the ‘learned’ critical reflection curricula of five core units in an Australian University. A content analysis of 162 assignments submitted by 86 students in 2013 and 2014 was conducted. Findings revealed students conceptualised critical reflection as a process that raised self-awareness, supported the application of theory in practice and, reinforced aspects of their professional identity. However, students adapted the process to fit their purpose and, when personal views clashed with professional practice, rather than examining the tensions that emerged, students privileged professional practice and silenced their personal views. Students did not engage with critical reflection to foster social change; rather their utilitarian approach positioned them to demonstrate competence in professional procedures. These findings highlight the influence of the contexts within which critical reflection is practised and informs the further development of the authors’ pedagogy.  相似文献

THE colorful paintings exhibited at the China's Art Gallery were done by the children's painting class at the Beijing Children's Palace. They project the innocence and joy of childhood. Little Artists Painting classes at the Children's Palace started in 1987. To date nearly 1,000 primary school students have learned received basic painting skills. The teachers have developed a curriculum geared toward children aged 5-12. The children learn how to sketch, paint in watercolor and in oils. Many talented students have emerged from these classes to go on to win painting competitions at home and abyoad. What is poverty? None of us young reporters has ever experienced poverty, so the idea of it strongly attracted us. Traveling across mountains and rivers, we visited seven counties and 14 townships in the Miao and Tong Nationalities Prefecture in Southeast Guizhou, the Buyi and Miao Nationalities Prefecture in Liupanshui City, and the Anshun region in South Guizhou. Between green mountains and blue waters, we saw poverty. And although we only saw the superficial aspects of people's lives there, it shocked and moved us.  相似文献

Field education is widely acknowledged as a central component of social work education. However, it requires a substantial commitment of time and energy from students which can present challenges to students who have multiple responsibilities. Based on a literature review conducted in preparation for doctoral research into social work student experience of juggling multiple roles and responsibilities with field placement, this article summarises what is known about the challenges they face and what helps them to complete placement. The findings have implications for students, schools of social work and field placement agencies. Further research should provide guidance for professional social work bodies, schools of social work, field educators and students.  相似文献

For this article, the Hudson and Ricketts Index of Attitudes toward Homosexuality (IAH) was used to measure levels of homophobia in a convenience sample of 124 students enrolled in social work programs in two major universities in the Republic of South Korea. The results indicated that BSW and MSW Korean students had high levels of homophobia, particularly in comparison to U.S. samples. In-class discussion of homosexuality was found to be significantly associated with lower levels of homophobia. The authors review these and other research findings and discuss implications for social work education in South Korea and the United States.  相似文献

Despite a major expansion in the number of students in higher education, students from rural areas continue to be underrepresented at selective universities. To reduce the urban‐rural imbalance of entry to selective universities, institutions in many countries of the world have implemented admission policies favoring rural students. Previous evidence has shown that rural students have lower academic performance than their urban peers, which leads to concern that rural students will reduce the academic excellence of selective universities. Using the introduction of a university admission policy favoring rural students in Taiwan and a unique administrative data set of students' academic records, we compare the academic performance of students from rural areas with that of their urban counterparts during their college years. The results show that rural students have consistently outperformed urban students in semester grade point averages and class rank percentile across time; however, the differences in academic performance are mainly attributed to the rural students' initial outperformance in the first semester of the freshman year.  相似文献

Volunteering is playing an increasingly bigger role in social services and schools both in Western settings and in the Hong Kong Chinese context. The demand for volunteers in the sector of social services is continually increasing (Sherr 2008). Little is known about the willingness of secondary school students to participate in future volunteering in Hong Kong. This study attempts to explore the phenomenon of youth volunteering through the theory of planned behavior and Personal and Social Responsibility, and identifies prior experience in community service as a main predictor of the willingness of the students to participate in future volunteering. A total of 1046 students from seven secondary schools in Hong Kong completed a structured questionnaire. Social workers, teachers, and volunteer managers could benefit from this study as they could foster students’ willingness to volunteer after graduation by actively engaging them in community service programs early on in a specific time in their life.  相似文献

This study takes an exploratory, qualitative approach to examine college students’ perceptions about divorce in the media. Findings suggest that participants perceived both positive and negative representations of divorced families in the media they consume, highlighting the complex nature of navigating and communicating through a divorce. Specifically, college students reported on aspects of the ex-spousal relationship, how children are affected, and the contrast between life pre- and postdivorce. An inductive theme analysis revealed several positive and negative media representations of divorce. Largely, college students perceive media messages about divorce to be accurate portrayals and impactful representations.  相似文献
