The problem of testing uniform association in cross-classifications having ordered categories is considered. Two families of test statistics, both based on divergences between certain functions of the observed data, are studied and compared. Our theoretical study is based on asymptotic properties. For each family, two consistent approximations to the null distribution of the test statistic are studied: the asymptotic null distribution and a bootstrap estimator; all the tests considered are consistent against fixed alternatives; finally, we do a local power study. Surprisingly, both families detect the same local alternatives. The finite sample performance of the tests in these two classes is numerically investigated through some simulation experiments. In the light of the obtained results, some practical recommendations are given.

When analyzing categorical data using loglinear models in sparse contingency tables, asymptotic results may fail. In this paper the empirical properties of three commonly used asymptotic tests of independence, based on the uniform association model for ordinal data, are investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulation. Five different bootstrapped tests of independence are presented and compared to the asymptotic tests. The comparisons are made with respect to both size and power properties of the tests. Results indicate that the asymptotic tests have poor size control. The test based on the estimated association parameter is severely conservative and the two chi-squared tests (Pearson, likelihood-ratio) are both liberal. The bootstrap tests that either use a parametric assumption or are based on non-pivotal test statistics do not perform better than the asymptotic tests in all situations. The bootstrap tests that are based on approximately pivotal statistics provide both adjustment of size and enhancement of power. These tests are therefore recommended for use in situations similar to those included in the simulation study.

The results of misspecification tests, based on Rao's score principle, are now routinely reported in applied econometric work. This paper draws together some important recent results which are designed to improve: (a) the robustness of standard score tests; and (b) the reliability of the asymptotic approximations used for inferential purposes. The discussion of robustness includes (i) parametric, (ii) distributional, and (iii) higher-order moment robustness. The issue of finite sample reliability focuses on controlling the size of the score test using (i) different variance estimators in conjunction with standard asymptotic theory, (ii) finite sample corrections obtainable from higher-order asymptotic analysis, and (iii) bootstrap procedures.

Three test statistics for a change-point in a linear model, variants of those considered by Andrews and Ploberger [Optimal tests when a nusiance parameter is present only under the alternative. Econometrica. 1994;62:1383–1414]: the sup-likelihood ratio (LR) statistic; a weighted average of the exponential of LR-statistics and a weighted average of LR-statistics, are studied. Critical values for the statistics with time trend regressors, obtained via simulation, are found to vary considerably, depending on conditions on the error terms. The performance of the bootstrap in approximating p-values of the distributions is assessed in a simulation study. A sample approximation to asymptotic analytical expressions extending those of Kim and Siegmund [The likelihood ratio test for a change-point in simple linear regression. Biometrika. 1989;76:409–423] in the case of the sup-LR test is also assessed. The approximations and bootstrap are applied to the Quandt data [The estimation of a parameter of a linear regression system obeying two separate regimes. J Amer Statist Assoc. 1958;53:873–880] and real data concerning a change-point in oxygen uptake during incremental exercise testing and the bootstrap gives reasonable results.

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the finite sample properties of a range of inference methods for propensity score-based matching and weighting estimators frequently applied to evaluate the average treatment effect on the treated. We analyze both asymptotic approximations and bootstrap methods for computing variances and confidence intervals in our simulation designs, which are based on German register data and U.S. survey data. We vary the design w.r.t. treatment selectivity, effect heterogeneity, share of treated, and sample size. The results suggest that in general, theoretically justified bootstrap procedures (i.e., wild bootstrapping for pair matching and standard bootstrapping for “smoother” treatment effect estimators) dominate the asymptotic approximations in terms of coverage rates for both matching and weighting estimators. Most findings are robust across simulation designs and estimators.

ABSTRACT

Bootstrap-based unit root tests are a viable alternative to asymptotic distribution-based procedures and, in some cases, are preferable because of the serious size distortions associated with the latter tests under certain situations. While several bootstrap-based unit root tests exist for autoregressive moving average processes with homoskedastic errors, only one such test is available when the innovations are conditionally heteroskedastic. The details for the exact implementation of this procedure are currently available only for the first order autoregressive processes. Monte-Carlo results are also published only for this limited case. In this paper we demonstrate how this procedure can be extended to higher order autoregressive processes through a transformed series used in augmented Dickey–Fuller unit root tests. We also investigate the finite sample properties for higher order processes through a Monte-Carlo study. Results show that the proposed tests have reasonable power and size properties.

The main contribution of this paper is a proof of the asymptotic validity of the application of the bootstrap to AR(∞) processes with unmodelled conditional heteroskedasticity. We first derive the asymptotic properties of the least-squares estimator of the autoregressive sieve parameters when the data are generated by a stationary linear process with martingale difference errors that are possibly subject to conditional heteroskedasticity of unknown form. These results are then used in establishing that a suitably constructed bootstrap estimator will have the same limit distribution as the least-squares estimator. Our results provide theoretical justification for the use of either the conventional asymptotic approximation based on robust standard errors or the bootstrap approximation of the distribution of autoregressive parameters. A simulation study suggests that the bootstrap approach tends to be more accurate in small samples.

This paper considers the likelihood ratio (LR) tests of stationarity, common trends and cointegration for multivariate time series. As the distribution of these tests is not known, a bootstrap version is proposed via a state- space representation. The bootstrap samples are obtained from the Kalman filter innovations under the null hypothesis. Monte Carlo simulations for the Gaussian univariate random walk plus noise model show that the bootstrap LR test achieves higher power for medium-sized deviations from the null hypothesis than a locally optimal and one-sided Lagrange Multiplier (LM) test that has a known asymptotic distribution. The power gains of the bootstrap LR test are significantly larger for testing the hypothesis of common trends and cointegration in multivariate time series, as the alternative asymptotic procedure – obtained as an extension of the LM test of stationarity – does not possess properties of optimality. Finally, it is shown that the (pseudo-)LR tests maintain good size and power properties also for the non-Gaussian series. An empirical illustration is provided.

Several asymptotic procedures have been suggested for inference on cointegrating parameters. But the tests based on asymptotic theory have been found to have substantial size distortions. The present paper shows that the bootstrap method gives the proper test sizes and that the power of the bootstrap based tests is satisfactory.

A CONTINUOUSLY ADAPTIVE RANK TEST FOR SHIFT IN LOCATION
This paper considers the problem of testing for shift in location when the symmetry of the underlying distribution is in doubt. Various adaptive test procedures have been suggested in the literature; they are mainly based on a preliminary test or measure of asymmetry, and then choosing between the sign or the Wilcoxon tests accordingly. However, as this paper demonstrates, there are some disadvantages with such procedures. This paper develops a test that does not suffer from such disadvantages. The proposed test is based on modifying the Wilcoxon scores according to the evidence of asymmetry of the distribution present in the data as indicated by the magnitude of the P‐value from a preliminary test of symmetry. A simulation study investigates and compares the performance of the proposed test and other known adaptive procedures in terms of power and attainment of the nominal size. The performance of a suitable bootstrap procedure for the situation under consideration is also studied. In most cases under consideration, the proposed test is found to be superior to the other tests.

In this paper we compare Bartlett-corrected, bootstrap, and fast double bootstrap tests on maximum likelihood estimates of cointegration parameters. The key result is that both the bootstrap and the Bartlett-corrected tests must be based on the unrestricted estimates of the cointegrating vectors: procedures based on the restricted estimates have almost no power. The small sample size bias of the asymptotic test appears so severe as to advise strongly against its use with the sample sizes commonly available; the fast double bootstrap test minimizes size bias, while the Bartlett-corrected test is somehow more powerful.

The size distortion problem is clearly indicative of the small-sample approximation in the Markov-switching regression model. This paper shows that the bootstrap procedure can relieve the effects that this problem has. Our Monte Carlo simulation results reveal that the bootstrap maximum likelihood asymptotic approximations to the distribution can often be good when the sample size is small.

We propose a test for equality of two means when data are functions and obtain the asymptotic properties of the test statistic as data dimension increases with the sample size. We also derive the asymptotic power of the test under some local alternatives and show that the test statistic is root-n consistent. A simulation study is conducted to evaluate the performance of the test numerically and to compare the proposed test with other existing four popular tests.

In linear and nonparametric regression models, the problem of testing for symmetry of the distribution of errors is considered. We propose a test statistic which utilizes the empirical characteristic function of the corresponding residuals. The asymptotic null distribution of the test statistic as well as its behavior under alternatives is investigated. A simulation study compares bootstrap versions of the proposed test to other more standard procedures.

Two different two-sample tests for dispersion differences based on placement statistics are proposed. The means and variances of the test statistics are derived, and asymptotic normality is established for both. Variants of the proposed tests based on reversing the X and Y labels in the test statistic calculations are shown to have different small-sample properties; for both pairs of tests, one member of the pair will be resolving, the other nonresolving. The proposed tests are similar in spirit to the dispersion tests of both Mood and Hollander; comparative simulation results for these four tests are given. For small sample sizes, the powers of the proposed tests are approximately equal to the powers of the tests of both Mood and Hollander for samples from the normal, Cauchy and exponential distributions. The one-sample limiting distributions are also provided, yielding useful approximations to the exact tests when one sample is much larger than the other. A bootstrap test may alternatively be performed. The proposed test statistics may be used with lightly censored data by substituting Kaplan-Meier estimates for the empirical distribution functions.

A bootstrap algorithm is proposed for testing Gaussianity and linearity in stationary time series, and consistency of the relevant bootstrap approximations is proven rigorously for the first time. Subba Rao and Gabr (1980) and Hinich (1982) have formulated some well-known nonparametric tests for Gaussianity and linearity based on the asymptotic distribution of the normalized bispectrum. The proposed bootstrap procedure gives an alternative way to approximate the finite-sample null distribution of such test statistics. We revisit a modified form of Hinich's test utilizing kernel smoothing, and compare its performance to the bootstrap test on several simulated data sets and two real data sets—the S&P 500 returns and the quarterly US real GNP growth rate. Interestingly, Hinich's test and the proposed bootstrapped version yield substantially different results when testing Gaussianity and linearity of the GNP data.

This article considers the problem of detection for changes in persistence with heavy-tailed innovations. We adopt a ratio type test and derive its null asymptotic distribution which is dependent on the stable index. Then a residual-based bootstrap is proposed when the stable index is unknown. Our procedure requires drawing bootstrap samples of size m < T, T being the size of original sample. We establish the convergence in probability of the bootstrap distribution function assuming that m → ∞ and m/T → 0. A Monte Carlo study has shown that the bootstrap improve the finite sample size and power compared to the asymptotic test, especially for small stable index.
