Lacan's theory of the four discourses and the sixth sense

This paper explores the usefulness of Jacques Lacan's Theory of the Four Discourses to the analysis of film and to an understanding of gendered authorship. The first part of the paper explains Lacan's theory, illustrating it with reference to the film The Sixth Sense (M. Night Shyalaman 1999) and demonstrating how each discourse is represented in the film. The paper shows how the interaction of the characters creates a commutation from one discourse to another and thus how particular speech acts change the discourse being transmitted. Using the example of film adaptations analyzed by the author, the article argues that hysteria, emerging as a discourse produced through gendered authorship, intervenes in the relay of filmic and other fictional texts, emerging as a production of the relationship of writer and adapter, and writer/director and spectator. Since the Discourse of the Hysteric is performed differently in men and women, it is possible to see how Lacan's Discourse Theory adds to an understanding of gendered authorship. Furthermore, it may be possible to characterize genre, form and institution through the play of the Four Discourses and show the thriller as a form of the Discourse of the Hysteric and the happy ending as a particular play of the Discourse of the Hysteric, the Discourse of the Analyst and the Discourse of the Master. By considering the author‐as‐discourse as part of this analysis, I argue that it is possible to consider the gendered body of the author as not completely separate or independent from the text.     

Divine economy and repentance in Discourse 4 of The Enlightener by Iosif Volotskii

The article examines the relatively neglected Discourse 4 of The Enlightener, Iosif Volotskii’s famous treatise written to defend Orthodoxy against religious dissidents known to history as the “Judaizing” heretics. In Discourse 4, Iosif deals with the divine economy, the possibility of repentance, and with God’s deviousness in achieving his purposes. In contrast to the other discourses of The Enlightener, here in Discourse 4 Iosif argues his case in a relatively non-polemical manner. The text has some significance for evaluating his work as a father confessor, and for his well-known severity towards heretics and apostates.

“Family? … Not Just Blood”: Discursive Constructions of “Family” in Adult,Former Foster Children’s Narratives

Framed by Relational Dialectics Theory, this study explores the ways adult, former foster children discursively construct meanings of “family.” Contrapuntal analysis of 24 interviews revealed two discourses as competing to constitute family: the Discourse of Family as Irreplaceable and Inescapable (Permanence) and the Discourse of Family as Performative Kinning (Performance). Permanence was constituted by themes of biology and historical connection, reifying normative understandings. Performance, comprised of role enactment, need for tolerance, and unconditional love, challenged the Permanence discourse. Throughout the narratives, Performance competed with Permanence for dominance, illustrating the cultural pervasiveness and power of Permanence yet, in some moments, privileging the marginalized Performance discourse. This discursive competition constructed meanings of family in narratives of life before, during, and after foster care. Overall, participant’s talk constructed complex webs of family relationships, allowing access to an important social institution—family—regardless of the presence/absence of culturally valued markers of family (e.g., biology, legality).
