Longitudinal surveys have emerged in recent years as an important data collection tool for population studies where the primary interest is to examine population changes over time at the individual level. Longitudinal data are often analyzed through the generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach. The vast majority of existing literature on the GEE method; however, is developed under non‐survey settings and are inappropriate for data collected through complex sampling designs. In this paper the authors develop a pseudo‐GEE approach for the analysis of survey data. They show that survey weights must and can be appropriately accounted in the GEE method under a joint randomization framework. The consistency of the resulting pseudo‐GEE estimators is established under the proposed framework. Linearization variance estimators are developed for the pseudo‐GEE estimators when the finite population sampling fractions are small or negligible, a scenario often held for large‐scale surveys. Finite sample performances of the proposed estimators are investigated through an extensive simulation study using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. The results show that the pseudo‐GEE estimators and the linearization variance estimators perform well under several sampling designs and for both continuous and binary responses. The authors consider a robust linear discriminant function based on high breakdown location and covariance matrix estimators. They derive influence functions for the estimators of the parameters of the discriminant function and for the associated classification error. The most B‐robust estimator is determined within the class of multivariate S‐estimators. This estimator, which minimizes the maximal influence that an outlier can have on the classification error, is also the most B‐robust location S‐estimator. A comparison of the most B‐robust estimator with the more familiar biweight S‐estimator is made.  相似文献

The authors propose a new class of robust estimators for the parameters of a regression model in which the distribution of the error terms belongs to a class of exponential families including the log‐gamma distribution. These estimates, which are a natural extension of the MM‐estimates for ordinary regression, may combine simultaneously high asymptotic efficiency and a high breakdown point. The authors prove the consistency and derive the asymptotic normal distribution of these estimates. A Monte Carlo study allows them to assess the efficiency and robustness of these estimates for finite samples.  相似文献

The authors explore likelihood‐based methods for making inferences about the components of variance in a general normal mixed linear model. In particular, they use local asymptotic approximations to construct confidence intervals for the components of variance when the components are close to the boundary of the parameter space. In the process, they explore the question of how to profile the restricted likelihood (REML). Also, they show that general REML estimates are less likely to fall on the boundary of the parameter space than maximum‐likelihood estimates and that the likelihood‐ratio test based on the local asymptotic approximation has higher power than the likelihood‐ratio test based on the usual chi‐squared approximation. They examine the finite‐sample properties of the proposed intervals by means of a simulation study.  相似文献

The authors propose a quasi‐likelihood approach analogous to two‐way analysis of variance for the estimation of the parameters of generalized linear mixed models with two components of dispersion. They discuss both the asymptotic and small‐sample behaviour of their estimators, and illustrate their use with salamander mating data.  相似文献

The authors develop jackknife and analytical variance estimators for the estimator of Chambers & Dunstan (1986) and Rao, Kovar & Mantel (1990) of the finite population distribution function, using complete auxiliary information. They also describe the associated model and show the design consistency of the variance estimators, whose small‐sample performance is examined through a limited simulation study. They highlight the operational advantages of the jackknife in the model‐based setting of Chambers & Dunstan (1986) and its better conditional performance in the design‐based setting of Rao, Kovar & Mantel (1990).  相似文献

Summary. Inflation-type weighted estimators for variance components can be badly biased. Modified weighted estimators suggested in the literature are also badly biased for certain sampling designs. We propose new estimators for variance components, some of which are approximately unbiased regardless of the sampling design. These estimators require knowledge of the joint inclusion probabilities of the observations. The small sample properties of the estimators are studied via simulation for the simple one-way random-effects model. An application is given by using data from the US Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.  相似文献

Although quantile regression estimators are robust against low leverage observations with atypically large responses (Koenker & Bassett 1978), they can be seriously affected by a few points that deviate from the majority of the sample covariates. This problem can be alleviated by downweighting observations with high leverage. Unfortunately, when the covariates are not elliptically distributed, Mahalanobis distances may not be able to correctly identify atypical points. In this paper the authors discuss the use of weights based on a new leverage measure constructed using Rosenblatt's multivariate transformation which is able to reflect nonelliptical structures in the covariate space. The resulting weighted estimators are consistent, asymptotically normal, and have a bounded influence function. In addition, the authors also discuss a selection criterion for choosing the downweighting scheme. They illustrate their approach with child growth data from Finland. Finally, their simulation studies suggest that this methodology has good finite‐sample properties.  相似文献

This paper proposes robust regression to solve the problem of outliers in seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) models. The authors present an adaptation of S‐estimators to SUR models. S‐estimators are robust, have a high breakdown point and are much more efficient than other robust regression estimators commonly used in practice. Furthermore, modifications to Ruppert's algorithm allow a fast evaluation of them in this context. The classical example of U.S. corporations is revisited, and it appears that the procedure gives an interesting insight into the problem.  相似文献

We consider two estimation schemes based on penalized quasilikelihood and quasi-pseudo-likelihood in Poisson mixed models. The asymptotic bias in regression coefficients and variance components estimated by penalized quasilikelihood (PQL) is studied for small values of the variance components. We show the PQL estimators of both regression coefficients and variance components in Poisson mixed models have a smaller order of bias compared to those for binomial data. Unbiased estimating equations based on quasi-pseudo-likelihood are proposed and are shown to yield consistent estimators under some regularity conditions. The finite sample performance of these two methods is compared through a simulation study.  相似文献

Most of the long memory estimators for stationary fractionally integrated time series models are known to experience non‐negligible bias in small and finite samples. Simple moment estimators are also vulnerable to such bias, but can easily be corrected. In this article, the authors propose bias reduction methods for a lag‐one sample autocorrelation‐based moment estimator. In order to reduce the bias of the moment estimator, the authors explicitly obtain the exact bias of lag‐one sample autocorrelation up to the order n−1. An example where the exact first‐order bias can be noticeably more accurate than its asymptotic counterpart, even for large samples, is presented. The authors show via a simulation study that the proposed methods are promising and effective in reducing the bias of the moment estimator with minimal variance inflation. The proposed methods are applied to the northern hemisphere data. The Canadian Journal of Statistics 37: 476–493; 2009 © 2009 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the finite sample properties of a range of inference methods for propensity score-based matching and weighting estimators frequently applied to evaluate the average treatment effect on the treated. We analyze both asymptotic approximations and bootstrap methods for computing variances and confidence intervals in our simulation designs, which are based on German register data and U.S. survey data. We vary the design w.r.t. treatment selectivity, effect heterogeneity, share of treated, and sample size. The results suggest that in general, theoretically justified bootstrap procedures (i.e., wild bootstrapping for pair matching and standard bootstrapping for “smoother” treatment effect estimators) dominate the asymptotic approximations in terms of coverage rates for both matching and weighting estimators. Most findings are robust across simulation designs and estimators.  相似文献

Not having a variance estimator is a seriously weak point of a sampling design from a practical perspective. This paper provides unbiased variance estimators for several sampling designs based on inverse sampling, both with and without an adaptive component. It proposes a new design, which is called the general inverse sampling design, that avoids sampling an infeasibly large number of units. The paper provide estimators for this design as well as its adaptive modification. A simple artificial example is used to demonstrate the computations. The adaptive and non‐adaptive designs are compared using simulations based on real data sets. The results indicate that, for appropriate populations, the adaptive version can have a substantial variance reduction compared with the non‐adaptive version. Also, adaptive general inverse sampling with a limitation on the initial sample size has a greater variance reduction than without the limitation.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the estimation of both the parameters and the nonparametric link function in partially linear single‐index models for longitudinal data that may be unbalanced. In particular, a new three‐stage approach is proposed to estimate the nonparametric link function using marginal kernel regression and the parametric components with generalized estimating equations. The resulting estimators properly account for the within‐subject correlation. We show that the parameter estimators are asymptotically semiparametrically efficient. We also show that the asymptotic variance of the link function estimator is minimized when the working error covariance matrices are correctly specified. The new estimators are more efficient than estimators in the existing literature. These asymptotic results are obtained without assuming normality. The finite‐sample performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation studies. In addition, two real‐data examples are analyzed to illustrate the methodology.  相似文献

Single‐index models provide one way of reducing the dimension in regression analysis. The statistical literature has focused mainly on estimating the index coefficients, the mean function, and their asymptotic properties. For accurate statistical inference it is equally important to estimate the error variance of these models. We examine two estimators of the error variance in a single‐index model and compare them with a few competing estimators with respect to their corresponding asymptotic properties. Using a simulation study, we evaluate the finite‐sample performance of our estimators against their competitors.  相似文献

Abstract. Estimators based on data‐driven generalized weighted Cramér‐von Mises distances are defined for data that are subject to a possible right censorship. The function used to measure the distance between the data, summarized by the Kaplan–Meier estimator, and the target model is allowed to depend on the sample size and, for example, on the number of censored items. It is shown that the estimators are consistent and asymptotically multivariate normal for every p dimensional parametric family fulfiling some mild regularity conditions. The results are applied to finite mixtures. Simulation results for finite mixtures indicate that the estimators are useful for moderate sample sizes. Furthermore, the simulation results reveal the usefulness of sample size dependent and censoring sensitive distance functions for moderate sample sizes. Moreover, the estimators for the mixing proportion seem to be fairly robust against a ‘symmetric’ contamination model even when censoring is present.  相似文献

By comparing estimators of the variance of idiosyncratic error at different robust levels, two Hausman-type test statistics are respectively constructed for the existence of individual and time effects in the panel regression model with incomplete data. The resultant test statistics have several desired properties. Firstly, they are robust to the presence of one effect when the other is tested. Secondly, they are immune to the non-normal distribution of the disturbances since the distributional conditions are not needed in the construction of the statistics. Thirdly, they have more robust performances than the main competitors in the literature when the covariates are correlated with the effects. Additionally, they are very simple and have no heavy computational burden. Joint tests for both of the two effects are also discussed. Monte Carlo evidence shows that the proposed tests have desired finite sample properties, and a real data analysis gives further support.  相似文献

The authors consider variance estimation for the generalized regression estimator in a two‐phase context when the first‐phase sample has been restratified using information gathered from the first‐phase sample. Simple computational expressions for variance estimation are provided for the double expansion estimator and the reweighted expansion estimator of Kott & Stukel (1997). These estimators are compared using data from the Canadian Retail Commodity Survey.  相似文献

Variance estimators for probability sample-based predictions of species richness (S) are typically conditional on the sample (expected variance). In practical applications, sample sizes are typically small, and the variance of input parameters to a richness estimator should not be ignored. We propose a modified bootstrap variance estimator that attempts to capture the sampling variance by generating B replications of the richness prediction from stochastically resampled data of species incidence. The variance estimator is demonstrated for the observed richness (SO), five richness estimators, and with simulated cluster sampling (without replacement) in 11 finite populations of forest tree species. A key feature of the bootstrap procedure is a probabilistic augmentation of a species incidence matrix by the number of species expected to be ‘lost’ in a conventional bootstrap resampling scheme. In Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations, the modified bootstrap procedure performed well in terms of tracking the average MC estimates of richness and standard errors. Bootstrap-based estimates of standard errors were as a rule conservative. Extensions to other sampling designs, estimators of species richness and diversity, and estimates of change are possible.  相似文献

The authors propose a family of robust nonparametric estimators for regression or autoregression functions based on kernel methods. They show the strong uniform consistency of these estimators under a general ergodicity condition when the data are unbounded and range over suitably increasing sequences of compact sets. They give some implications of these results for stating the prediction in Markovian processes with finite order and show, through simulation, the efficiency of the predictors they propose.  相似文献
