Motivated by Sampath [Finite population variance estimation under LSS with multiple random starts, Commun. Statist. – Theory Methods 38 (2009), pp. 3596–3607], in this paper unbiased estimators for population variance have been developed under linear systematic sampling, balanced systematic sampling and modified systematic sampling with multiple random starts. Expressions for variances of the estimators are also developed. Detailed numerical comparative studies have been carried out to study the performances of the estimators under various systematic sampling schemes with multiple random starts and some interesting conclusions have been drawn out of the study.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper, we deal with the problem of estimating the delayed renewal and variance functions in delayed renewal processes. Two parametric plug-in estimators for these functions are proposed and their unbiasedness, asymptotic unbiasedness and consistency properties are investigated. The asymptotic normality of these estimators are established. Further, a method for the computation of the estimators is given. Finally, the performances of the estimators are evaluated for small sample sizes by a simulation study.  相似文献

The one-way random effects model with unequal variances and unequal sample sizes is considered. Estimation of the variances, variance of a single observation (total variance), and the standard error of the unweighted mean are considered. Precision of the Analysis of Variance and Unweighted Sums of Squares type of estimators and the Minimum Norm Quadratic Unbiased Estimators with a priori weights are examined.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present article, an effort has been made to develop calibration estimators of the population mean under two-stage stratified random sampling design when auxiliary information is available at primary stage unit (psu) level. The properties of the developed estimators are derived in-terms of design based approximate variance and approximate consistent design based estimator of the variance. Some simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the relative performance of calibration estimator over the usual estimator of the population mean without using auxiliary information in two-stage stratified random sampling. Proposed calibration estimators have outperformed the usual estimator without using auxiliary information.  相似文献

For a random variable obeying the inverse Gaussian distribu-tion and its reciprocal, the uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimators of each mode are obtained. The UMVU estimators

of the left and right limits of a certain interval which contains an inverse Gaussian variate with an arbitrary given probability are also proposed.  相似文献

Imputation is often used in surveys to treat item nonresponse. It is well known that treating the imputed values as observed values may lead to substantial underestimation of the variance of the point estimators. To overcome the problem, a number of variance estimation methods have been proposed in the literature, including resampling methods such as the jackknife and the bootstrap. In this paper, we consider the problem of doubly robust inference in the presence of imputed survey data. In the doubly robust literature, point estimation has been the main focus. In this paper, using the reverse framework for variance estimation, we derive doubly robust linearization variance estimators in the case of deterministic and random regression imputation within imputation classes. Also, we study the properties of several jackknife variance estimators under both negligible and nonnegligible sampling fractions. A limited simulation study investigates the performance of various variance estimators in terms of relative bias and relative stability. Finally, the asymptotic normality of imputed estimators is established for stratified multistage designs under both deterministic and random regression imputation. Let X1, …, Xp be independent random variables, all having the same distribution up to a possibly varying unspecified parameter, where each of the p distributions belongs to the family of one parameter discrete exponential distributions. The problem is to estimate the unknown parameters simultaneously. Hudson (1978) shows that the minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE) of the parameters is inadmissible under squared error loss, and estimators better than the MVUE are proposed. Essentially, these estimators shrink the MVUE towards the origin. In this paper, we indicate that estimators shifting the MVUE towards a point different from the origin or a point determined by the observations can be obtained.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present investigation deals with the problem of estimation of population mean in two-phase sampling. In the presence of two auxiliary variables, some classes of estimators have been proposed through predictive approach. Properties of the proposed classes of estimators have been studied, and the unbiased versions of these estimators along with their approximate variance expressions are obtained under simple random sampling without replacement scheme. The respective optimum strategies of the proposed estimators are discussed, and their empirical and graphical comparisons with some contemporary estimators of population mean have been made. Suitable recommendations to the survey practitioner are given.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The measurement error model with replicated data on study as well as explanatory variables is considered. The measurement error variance associated with the explanatory variable is estimated using the complete data and the grouped data which is used for the construction of the consistent estimators of regression coefficient. These estimators are further used in constructing an almost unbiased estimator of regression coefficient. The large sample properties of these estimators are derived without assuming any distributional form of the measurement errors and the random error component under the setup of an ultrastructural model.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of estimating the probability P = Pr(X < Y) when X and Y are independent exponential random variables with unequal scale parameters and a common location parameter. Uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of P is obtained. The asymptotic distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator is obtained and then the asymptotic equivalence of the two estimators is established. Performance of the two estimators for moderate sample sizes is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. An approximate interval estimator is also obtained.  相似文献

For the balanced random effects models, when the variance components are correlated either naturally or through common prior structures, by assuming a mixed prior distribution for the variance components, we propose some new Bayesian estimators. To contrast and compare the new estimators with the minimum variance unbiased (MVUE) and restricted maximum likelihood estimators (RMLE), some simulation studies are also carried out. It turns out that the proposed estimators have smaller mean squared errors than the MVUE and RMLE.  相似文献

The paper deals with generalized confidence intervals for the between-group variance in one-way heteroscedastic (unbalanced) ANOVA with random effects. The approach used mimics the standard one applied in mixed linear models with two variance components, where interval estimators are based on a minimal sufficient statistic derived after an initial reduction by the principle of invariance. A minimal sufficient statistic under heteroscedasticity is found to resemble its homoscedastic counterpart and further analogies between heteroscedastic and homoscedastic cases lead us to two classes of fiducial generalized pivots for the between-group variance. The procedures suggested formerly by Wimmer and Witkovský [Between group variance component interval estimation for the unbalanced heteroscedastic one-way random effects model, J. Stat. Comput. Simul. 73 (2003), pp. 333–346] and Li [Comparison of confidence intervals on between group variance in unbalanced heteroscedastic one-way random models, Comm. Statist. Simulation Comput. 36 (2007), pp. 381–390] are found to belong to these two classes. We comment briefly on some of their properties that were not mentioned in the original papers. In addition, properties of another particular generalized pivot are considered.  相似文献

Abstract

Many researchers used auxiliary information together with survey variable to improve the efficiency of population parameters like mean, variance, total and proportion. Ratio and regression estimation are the most commonly used methods that utilized auxiliary information in different ways to get the maximum benefits in the form of high precision of the estimators. Thompson first introduced the concept of Adaptive cluster sampling, which is an appropriate technique for collecting the samples from rare and clustered populations. In this article, a generalized exponential type estimator is proposed and its properties have been studied for the estimation of rare and highly clustered population variance using single auxiliary information. A numerical study is carried out on a real and artificial population to judge the performance of the proposed estimator over the competing estimators. It is shown that the proposed generalized exponential type estimator is more efficient than the adaptive and non adaptive estimators under conventional sampling design.  相似文献

A modification of the Greenwood variance estimator is defined and shown to be free of bias whenever its constituent interval estimators are conditionally unbiased, given the sample size at the start of the interval. Using the modified estimator as a standard of comparison, the original Greenwood estimator is seen to have an intrinsic positive bias.Underestimation of variances through the use of Greenwood's formula must be due to bias in the constituent interval estimators and/or, with fixed interval bounds, due to disregarding the random character of the total number of life table intervals to exhaustion of ttje sample. Some easy to prove properties of the modified and the original Greenwood estimators are stated that apply in the absence of censoring. A suggestion is made for reducing the bias of the interval variance estimators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Scale equivariant estimators of the common variance σ2, of correlated normal random variables, have mean squared errors (MSE) which depend on the unknown correlations. For this reason, a scale equivariant estimator of σ2 which uniformly minimizes the MSE does not exist. For the equi-correlated case, we have developed three equivariant estimators of σ2: a Bayesian estimator for invariant prior as well as two non-Bayesian estimators. We then generalized these three estimators for the case of several variables with multiple unknown correlations. In addition, we developed a system of confidence intervals which produce the desired coverage probability while being efficient in terms of expected length.  相似文献

The studied topic is motivated by the problem of interlaboratory comparisons. This paper focuses on the confidence interval estimation of the between group variance in the unbalanced heteroscedastic one-way random effects model. Several interval estimators are proposed and compared by means of the simulation study. The most recommended (safest) is the confidence interval based on Bonferroni's inequality.  相似文献

Cross-classified data are often obtained in controlled experimental situations and in epidemiologic studies. As an example of the latter, occupational health studies sometimes require personal exposure measurements on a random sample of workers from one or more job groups, in one or more plant locations, on several different sampling dates. Because the marginal distributions of exposure data from such studies are generally right-skewed and well-approximated as lognormal, researchers in this area often consider the use of ANOVA models after a logarithmic transformation. While it is then of interest to estimate original-scale population parameters (e.g., the overall mean and variance), standard candidates such as maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) can be unstable and highly biased. Uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) cstiniators offer a viable alternative, and are adaptable to sampling schemes that are typiral of experimental or epidemiologic studies. In this paper, we provide UMVU estimators for the mean and variance under two random effects ANOVA models for logtransformed data. We illustrate substantial mean squared error gains relative to the MLE when estimating the mean under a one-way classification. We illustrate that the results can readily be extended to encompass a useful class of purely random effects models, provided that the study data are balanced.  相似文献

For m–dependent, identically distributed random observation, the bootstrap method provides inconsistent estimators of the distribution and variance of the sample mean. This paper proposes an alternative resampling procedure. For estimating the distribution and variance of a function of the sample mean, the proposed resampling estimators are shown to be strongly consistent.  相似文献

Estimation of the population mean under the regression model with random components is considered. Conditions under which the random components regression estimator is design consistent are given. It is shown that consistency holds when incorrect values are used for the variance components. The regression estimator constructed with model parameters that differ considerably from the true parameters performed well in a Monte Carlo study. Variance estimators for the regression predictor are suggested. A variance estimator appropriate for estimators constructed with a biased estimator for the between-group variance component performed well in the Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

Abstract

The asymptotic cumulants of the minimum phi-divergence estimators of the parameters in a model for categorical data are obtained up to the fourth order with the higher-order asymptotic variance under possible model misspecification. The corresponding asymptotic cumulants up to the third order for the studentized minimum phi-divergence estimator are also derived. These asymptotic cumulants, when a model is misspecified, depend on the form of the phi-divergence. Numerical illustrations with simulations are given for typical cases of the phi-divergence, where the maximum likelihood estimator does not necessarily give best results. Real data examples are shown using log-linear models for contingency tables.  相似文献
