ABSTRACT

We introduce a nonparametric quantile predictor for multivariate time series via generalizing the well-known univariate conditional quantile into a multivariate setting for dependent data. Applying the multivariate predictor to predicting tail conditional quantiles from foreign exchange daily returns, it is observed that the accuracy of extreme tail quantile predictions can be greatly improved by incorporating interdependence between the returns in a bivariate framework. As a special application of the multivariate quantile predictor, we also introduce a so-called joint-horizon quantile predictor that is used to produce multi-step quantile predictions in one-go from univariate time series realizations. A simulation example is discussed to illustrate the relevance of the joint-horizon approach.  相似文献

Quantile regression is a very important statistical tool for predictive modelling and risk assessment. For many applications, conditional quantile at different levels are estimated separately. Consequently the monotonicity of conditional quantiles can be violated when quantile regression curves cross each other. In this paper, we propose a new Bayesian multiple quantile regression based on heavy tailed distribution for non-crossing. We consider a linear quantile regression model for simultaneous Bayesian estimation of multiple quantiles based on a regularly varying assumptions. The numerical and competitive performance of the proposed method is illustrated by simulation.  相似文献

The value at risk (VaR) is a risk measure that is widely used by financial institutions to allocate risk. VaR forecast estimation involves the evaluation of conditional quantiles based on the currently available information. Recent advances in VaR evaluation incorporate conditional variance into the quantile estimation, which yields the conditional autoregressive VaR (CAViaR) models. However, uncertainty with regard to model selection in CAViaR model estimators raises the issue of identifying the better quantile predictor via averaging. In this study, we propose a quasi-Bayesian model averaging method that generates combinations of conditional VaR estimators based on single CAViaR models. This approach provides us a basis for comparing single CAViaR models against averaged ones for their ability to forecast VaR. We illustrate this method using simulated and financial daily return data series. The results demonstrate significant findings with regard to the use of averaged conditional VaR estimates when forecasting quantile risk.  相似文献

Quantile regression (QR) is becoming increasingly popular due to its relevance in many scientific investigations. There is a great amount of work about linear and nonlinear QR models. Specifically, nonparametric estimation of the conditional quantiles received particular attention, due to its model flexibility. However, nonparametric QR techniques are limited in the number of covariates. Dimension reduction offers a solution to this problem by considering low-dimensional smoothing without specifying any parametric or nonparametric regression relation. The existing dimension reduction techniques focus on the entire conditional distribution. We, on the other hand, turn our attention to dimension reduction techniques for conditional quantiles and introduce a new method for reducing the dimension of the predictor $$\mathbf {X}$$. The novelty of this paper is threefold. We start by considering a single index quantile regression model, which assumes that the conditional quantile depends on $$\mathbf {X}$$ through a single linear combination of the predictors, then extend to a multi-index quantile regression model, and finally, generalize the proposed methodology to any statistical functional of the conditional distribution. The performance of the methodology is demonstrated through simulation examples and real data applications. Our results suggest that this method has a good finite sample performance and often outperforms the existing methods.  相似文献

We present a novel approach to sufficient dimension reduction for the conditional kth moments in regression. The approach provides a computationally feasible test for the dimension of the central kth-moment subspace. In addition, we can test predictor effects without assuming any models. All test statistics proposed in the novel approach have asymptotic chi-squared distributions.  相似文献

The estimation of extreme conditional quantiles is an important issue in different scientific disciplines. Up to now, the extreme value literature focused mainly on estimation procedures based on independent and identically distributed samples. Our contribution is a two-step procedure for estimating extreme conditional quantiles. In a first step nonextreme conditional quantiles are estimated nonparametrically using a local version of [Koenker, R. and Bassett, G. (1978). Regression quantiles. Econometrica, 46, 33–50.] regression quantile methodology. Next, these nonparametric quantile estimates are used as analogues of univariate order statistics in procedures for extreme quantile estimation. The performance of the method is evaluated for both heavy tailed distributions and distributions with a finite right endpoint using a small sample simulation study. A bootstrap procedure is developed to guide in the selection of an optimal local bandwidth. Finally the procedure is illustrated in two case studies.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new risk measure, the so‐called conditional tail moment. It is defined as the moment of order a ≥ 0 of the loss distribution above the upper α‐quantile where α ∈ (0,1). Estimating the conditional tail moment permits us to estimate all risk measures based on conditional moments such as conditional tail expectation, conditional value at risk or conditional tail variance. Here, we focus on the estimation of these risk measures in case of extreme losses (where α ↓0 is no longer fixed). It is moreover assumed that the loss distribution is heavy tailed and depends on a covariate. The estimation method thus combines non‐parametric kernel methods with extreme‐value statistics. The asymptotic distribution of the estimators is established, and their finite‐sample behaviour is illustrated both on simulated data and on a real data set of daily rainfalls.  相似文献

In this article, the simple step-stress model is considered based on generalized Type-I hybrid censored data from the exponential distribution. The maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of the unknown parameters are derived assuming a cumulative exposure model. We then derive the exact distributions of the MLEs of the parameters using conditional moment generating functions. The Bayesian estimators of the parameters are derived and then compared with the MLEs. We also derive confidence intervals for the parameters using these exact distributions, asymptotic distributions of the MLEs, Bayesian, and the parametric bootstrap methods. The problem of determining the optimal stress-changing point is discussed and the MLEs of the pth quantile and reliability functions at the use condition are obtained. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation and some numerical results are presented for illustrating all the inferential methods developed here.  相似文献

Abstract

Using a model-assisted approach, this paper studies asymptotically design-unbiased (ADU) estimation of a population “distribution function” and extends to deriving an asymptotic and approximate unbiased estimator for a population quantile from a sample chosen with varying probabilities. The respective asymptotic standard errors and confidence intervals are then worked out. Numerical findings based on an actual data support the theory with efficient results.  相似文献

Value at Risk (VaR) forecasts can be produced from conditional autoregressive VaR models, estimated using quantile regression. Quantile modeling avoids a distributional assumption, and allows the dynamics of the quantiles to differ for each probability level. However, by focusing on a quantile, these models provide no information regarding expected shortfall (ES), which is the expectation of the exceedances beyond the quantile. We introduce a method for predicting ES corresponding to VaR forecasts produced by quantile regression models. It is well known that quantile regression is equivalent to maximum likelihood based on an asymmetric Laplace (AL) density. We allow the density's scale to be time-varying, and show that it can be used to estimate conditional ES. This enables a joint model of conditional VaR and ES to be estimated by maximizing an AL log-likelihood. Although this estimation framework uses an AL density, it does not rely on an assumption for the returns distribution. We also use the AL log-likelihood for forecast evaluation, and show that it is strictly consistent for the joint evaluation of VaR and ES. Empirical illustration is provided using stock index data. Consider the nonparametric heteroscedastic regression model Y=m(X)+σ(X)?, where m(·) is an unknown conditional mean function and σ(·) is an unknown conditional scale function. In this paper, the limit distribution of the quantile estimate for the scale function σ(X) is derived. Since the limit distribution depends on the unknown density of the errors, an empirical likelihood ratio statistic based on quantile estimator is proposed. This statistics is used to construct confidence intervals for the variance function. Under certain regularity conditions, it is shown that the quantile estimate of the scale function converges to a Brownian motion and the empirical likelihood ratio statistic converges to a chi-squared random variable. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the least squares procedure when the underlying errors have heavy tails.  相似文献

Quantile regression is a technique to estimate conditional quantile curves. It provides a comprehensive picture of a response contingent on explanatory variables. In a flexible modeling framework, a specific form of the conditional quantile curve is not a priori fixed. This motivates a local parametric rather than a global fixed model fitting approach. A nonparametric smoothing estimator of the conditional quantile curve requires to balance between local curvature and stochastic variability. In this paper, we suggest a local model selection technique that provides an adaptive estimator of the conditional quantile regression curve at each design point. Theoretical results claim that the proposed adaptive procedure performs as good as an oracle which would minimize the local estimation risk for the problem at hand. We illustrate the performance of the procedure by an extensive simulation study and consider a couple of applications: to tail dependence analysis for the Hong Kong stock market and to analysis of the distributions of the risk factors of temperature dynamics.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A quantile autoregresive model is a useful extension of classical autoregresive models as it can capture the influences of conditioning variables on the location, scale, and shape of the response distribution. However, at the extreme tails, standard quantile autoregression estimator is often unstable due to data sparsity. In this article, assuming quantile autoregresive models, we develop a new estimator for extreme conditional quantiles of time series data based on extreme value theory. We build the connection between the second-order conditions for the autoregression coefficients and for the conditional quantile functions, and establish the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator. The finite sample performance of the proposed method is illustrated through a simulation study and the analysis of U.S. retail gasoline price.  相似文献

In many regression problems, predictors are naturally grouped. For example, when a set of dummy variables is used to represent categorical variables, or a set of basis functions of continuous variables is included in the predictor set, it is important to carry out a feature selection both at the group level and at individual variable levels within the group simultaneously. To incorporate the group and variables within-group information into a regularized model fitting, several regularization methods have been developed, including the Cox regression and the conditional mean regression. Complementary to earlier works, the simultaneous group and within-group variables selection method is examined in quantile regression. We propose a hierarchically penalized quantile regression, and show that the hierarchical penalty possesses the oracle property in quantile regression, as well as in the Cox regression. The proposed method is evaluated through simulation studies and a real data application.  相似文献

In this article, we apply the empirical likelihood technique to propose a new class of quantile estimators in the presence of some auxiliary information under negatively associated samples. It is shown that the proposed quantile estimators are asymptotically normally distributed with smaller asymptotic variances than those of the usual quantile estimators. It is also shown that blocking technique is an useful tool in estimating asymptotic variance under negatively associated samples, which makes it possible to construct normal approximation based confidence intervals for quantiles.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of constructing confidence intervals for nonparametric quantile regression with an emphasis on smoothing splines. The mean‐based approaches for smoothing splines of Wahba (1983) and Nychka (1988) may not be efficient for constructing confidence intervals for the underlying function when the observed data are non‐Gaussian distributed, for instance if they are skewed or heavy‐tailed. This paper proposes a method of constructing confidence intervals for the unknown τth quantile function (0<τ<1) based on smoothing splines. In this paper we investigate the extent to which the proposed estimator provides the desired coverage probability. In addition, an improvement based on a local smoothing parameter that provides more uniform pointwise coverage is developed. The results from numerical studies including a simulation study and real data analysis demonstrate the promising empirical properties of the proposed approach.  相似文献

There are a number of situations in which an observation is retained only if it is a record value, which include studies in industrial quality control experiments, destructive stress testing, meteorology, hydrology, seismology, athletic events and mining. When the number of records is fixed in advance, the data are referred to as inversely sampled record-breaking data. In this paper, we study the problems of constructing the nonparametric confidence intervals for quantiles and quantile intervals of the parent distribution based on record data. For a single record-breaking sample, the confidence coefficients of the confidence intervals for the pth quantile cannot exceed p and 1?p, on the basis of upper and lower records, respectively; hence, replication is required. So, we develop the procedure based on k independent record-breaking samples. Various cases have been studied and in each case, the optimal k and the exact nonparametric confidence intervals are obtained, and exact expressions for the confidence coefficients of these confidence intervals are derived. Finally, the results are illustrated by numerical computations.  相似文献

In conditional logspline modelling, the logarithm of the conditional density function, log f(y|x), is modelled by using polynomial splines and their tensor products. The parameters of the model (coefficients of the spline functions) are estimated by maximizing the conditional log-likelihood function. The resulting estimate is a density function (positive and integrating to one) and is twice continuously differentiable. The estimate is used further to obtain estimates of regression and quantile functions in a natural way. An automatic procedure for selecting the number of knots and knot locations based on minimizing a variant of the AIC is developed. An example with real data is given. Finally, extensions and further applications of conditional logspline models are discussed.  相似文献

A novel approach to quantile estimation in multivariate linear regression models with change-points is proposed: the change-point detection and the model estimation are both performed automatically, by adopting either the quantile-fused penalty or the adaptive version of the quantile-fused penalty. These two methods combine the idea of the check function used for the quantile estimation and the L1 penalization principle known from the signal processing and, unlike some standard approaches, the presented methods go beyond typical assumptions usually required for the model errors, such as sub-Gaussian or normal distribution. They can effectively handle heavy-tailed random error distributions, and, in general, they offer a more complex view on the data as one can obtain any conditional quantile of the target distribution, not just the conditional mean. The consistency of detection is proved and proper convergence rates for the parameter estimates are derived. The empirical performance is investigated via an extensive comparative simulation study and practical utilization is demonstrated using a real data example.  相似文献

Value at risk (VaR) is the standard measure of market risk used by financial institutions. Interpreting the VaR as the quantile of future portfolio values conditional on current information, the conditional autoregressive value at risk (CAViaR) model specifies the evolution of the quantile over time using an autoregressive process and estimates the parameters with regression quantiles. Utilizing the criterion that each period the probability of exceeding the VaR must be independent of all the past information, we introduce a new test of model adequacy, the dynamic quantile test. Applications to real data provide empirical support to this methodology.  相似文献
