Some of the major aspects of intercultural communication in Italy in particular, and in Europe in general, are summarised in this paper. In the wake of developments in favour of political and social minority rights in the United States, voluntary movements in Europe arose in the 1970s and became stronger in the 1990s. Among their many activities, volunteers working to further intercultural education have taken on the role of multipliers, spreading the application of intercultural learning. They have served alternately as trainers of young people and students of experts, functioning as hinges between teaching and learning. In many European countries, intercultural education in schools is still left to volunteer initiatives. The peculiarity of intercultural communication lies in its pragmatic approach to reality. It is based on a few abstract general truths, such as the fact that all humans have a culture, value orientation, etc. allowing them to understand and interpret an endless amount of practical experiences. Here, we shall present an anthropological approach to intercultural relations, considering various issues, such as the differences between cultural and national identities, the development of ethnocentrism as a response to perceived foreign threats, and the differences between assimilation, inclusion and integration. The focus on the Mediterranean region provides an example of the intercultural communication that takes place among many western and eastern cultures.

This article analyzes the role of intercultural communication in cyberterrorism. Cyberspace is a common site of meeting and interaction between cyberterrorists from multiple cultural backgrounds. It is also a place where cyberterrorists have to face law enforcement agents. As a result, intercultural clashes sometimes occur. This justifies the necessity for better understanding intercultural communication in Internet-mediated situations. Although there have been published pieces on hackers' culture, this article breaks new ground partly because no literature review has produced work on the role of intercultural communication in cyberterrorism.

Are processes such as listening and communication integral elements? This study attempts to suggest answers to the aforementioned questions using data collected from interviews with business communication professionals.

ABSTRACT

This article draws on and contributes to the body of knowledge on the development of cultural competence and study abroad experiences. The study program has been well established for several years and blends a 12-day intercultural immersion experience with preparatory classroom teaching and relevant assessment. This study builds on an earlier evaluation, adopting a robust qualitative approach. The study confirms that such experiences can significantly contribute to transformation in students’ capacity to challenge superficial cultural stereotypes and critically engage in the interplay among disadvantage, contextual factors, and sociopolitical structures. Developing critical reflection skills is an integral component in promoting transformation.

Nowadays deconstruction has gradually changed people's way of thinking and people have come to establish the multifaceted thought patterns from multiple perspectives to ponder intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is neither static nor monolithic but fluid and constantly evolving. This paper starts with the microdefinition as well as an emic, culture-specific approach to the research. Then it presents the manifestations of the new trend. This essay adopts the framework of cultural pattern of Hall's high-context and low-context cultures. At last, the author gives some suggestions about how to shatter preconceptions and ethnocentrism to achieve effective communication in intercultural settings.

With the increasing development of apparent and intensified globalization, the world has become a true global village. In every field of this global village, such as in business, health care, education and so on, people can see intercultural communication everywhere, which means different world views, different ways of thinking, different understandings on the same matter, and different solutions can be seen coming from people of different cultural backgrounds. This essay will briefly talk about the phenomenon of cross-cultural communication in medical field based on Gray's Anatomy S2. The cases I'm going to mention in this article are about communication between doctors, communication between doctors and patients, communication between people who hold different religion and so on. In analyzing these cases, theories put forward by scholars such as Geert Hofstede, Edward T Hall, and Fon Trompenaars will be used.

Abstract

An international social work field education programme at the University of South Australia provides social work students with the opportunity to develop intercultural skills and intercultural sensitivity. The programme is conceptualised within a developmental framework that enables the identification of stages of personal growth and professional development from ethnocentrism to ‘interculturality’ or intercultural sensitivity. This framework, alongside the use of a clear ethical perspective and the reflective practice process, is a useful resource to assist students to identify their level of sophistication of cross-cultural competence and to respond to them in ways that facilitate their growth and development towards competent social workers working with difference and across cultures.

The purpose of this study was to teach and evaluate the effectiveness of an Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) course through translation to students in Afghanistan. First, an interview was conducted to determine students’ computer skills. It was concluded that the students had almost no computer skills. The course was delivered to two groups of first-year students for 14 weeks during one semester. In group one, students were taught by a Turkish instructor through a translator. The course was delivered to group 2 by a native-language speaking teacher. At the end of the semester, students of both groups were given a final exam and were asked to comment about teaching speed, overall satisfaction, teacher reactions, course materials and future improvements to the course. Statistically, there was no significant difference between the final performances of students in both groups. The students also declared that they wanted to greatly improve their computer skills and use the Internet to make use of digital ICT resources for other courses, too. An additional finding was that there was a 20-min time-delay between the Turkish and native groups due to the translation process throughout each course session.
