Non-Gaussian processes of Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) type offer the possibility of capturing important distributional deviations from Gaussianity and for flexible modelling of dependence structures. This paper develops this potential, drawing on and extending powerful results from probability theory for applications in statistical analysis. Their power is illustrated by a sustained application of OU processes within the context of finance and econometrics. We construct continuous time stochastic volatility models for financial assets where the volatility processes are superpositions of positive OU processes, and we study these models in relation to financial data and theory.  相似文献

Abstract. In this paper, we study the detailed distributional properties of integrated non-Gaussian Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (intOU) processes. Both exact and approximate results are given. We emphasize the study of the tail behaviour of the intOU process. Our results have many potential applications in financial economics, as OU processes are used as models of instantaneous variance in stochastic volatility (SV) models. In this case, an intOU process can be regarded as a model of integrated variance. Hence, the tail behaviour of the intOU process will determine the tail behaviour of returns generated by SV models.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal prediction for log-Gaussian Cox processes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Space–time point pattern data have become more widely available as a result of technological developments in areas such as geographic information systems. We describe a flexible class of space–time point processes. Our models are Cox processes whose stochastic intensity is a space–time Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. We develop moment-based methods of parameter estimation, show how to predict the underlying intensity by using a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and illustrate the performance of our methods on a synthetic data set.  相似文献

Inference for Observations of Integrated Diffusion Processes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  Estimation of parameters in diffusion models is investigated when the observations are integrals over intervals of the process with respect to some weight function. This type of observations can, for example, be obtained when the process is observed after passage through an electronic filter. Another example is provided by the ice-core data on oxygen isotopes used to investigate paleo-temperatures. Finally, such data play a role in connection with the stochastic volatility models of finance. The integrated process is not a Markov process. Therefore, prediction-based estimating functions are applied to estimate parameters in the underlying diffusion model. The estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. The theory developed in the paper also applies to integrals of processes other than diffusions. The method is applied to inference based on integrated data from Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes and from the Cox–Ingersoll–Ross model, for both of which an explicit optimal estimating function is found.  相似文献

Abstract.  The Pearson diffusions form a flexible class of diffusions defined by having linear drift and quadratic squared diffusion coefficient. It is demonstrated that for this class explicit statistical inference is feasible. A complete model classification is presented for the ergodic Pearson diffusions. The class of stationary distributions equals the full Pearson system of distributions. Well-known instances are the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes and the square root (CIR) processes. Also diffusions with heavy-tailed and skew marginals are included. Explicit formulae for the conditional moments and the polynomial eigenfunctions are derived. Explicit optimal martingale estimating functions are found. The discussion covers GMM, quasi-likelihood, non-linear weighted least squares estimation and likelihood inference too. The analytical tractability is inherited by transformed Pearson diffusions, integrated Pearson diffusions, sums of Pearson diffusions and Pearson stochastic volatility models. For the non-Markov models, explicit optimal prediction-based estimating functions are found. The estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal.  相似文献

We compare results for stochastic volatility models where the underlying volatility process having generalized inverse Gaussian (GIG) and tempered stable marginal laws. We use a continuous time stochastic volatility model where the volatility follows an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck stochastic differential equation driven by a Lévy process. A model for long-range dependence is also considered, its merit and practical relevance discussed. We find that the full GIG and a special case, the inverse gamma, marginal distributions accurately fit real data. Inference is carried out in a Bayesian framework, with computation using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). We develop an MCMC algorithm that can be used for a general marginal model.  相似文献

We consider stochastic volatility models that are defined by an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU)-Gamma time change. These models are most suitable for modeling financial time series and follow the general framework of the popular non-Gaussian OU models of Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard. One current problem of these otherwise attractive nontrivial models is, in general, the unavailability of a tractable likelihood-based statistical analysis for the returns of financial assets, which requires the ability to sample from a nontrivial joint distribution. We show that an OU process driven by an infinite activity Gamma process, which is an OU-Gamma process, exhibits unique features, which allows one to explicitly describe and exactly sample from relevant joint distributions. This is a consequence of the OU structure and the calculus of Gamma and Dirichlet processes. We develop a particle marginal Metropolis–Hastings algorithm for this type of continuous-time stochastic volatility models and check its performance using simulated data. For illustration we finally fit the model to S&P500 index data.  相似文献

Parametric Estimation for Subordinators and Induced OU Processes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract.  Consider a stationary sequence of random variables with infinitely divisible marginal law, characterized by its Lévy density. We analyse the behaviour of a so-called cumulant M-estimator, in case this Lévy density is characterized by a Euclidean (finite dimensional) parameter. Under mild conditions, we prove consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimator. The estimator is considered in the situation where the data are increments of a subordinator as well as the situation where the data consist of a discretely sampled Ornstein–Uhlenbeck (OU) process induced by the subordinator. We illustrate our results for the Gamma-process and the Inverse-Gaussian OU process. For these processes we also explain how the estimator can be computed numerically.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper we present a class of continuous-time processes arising from the solution of the generalized Langevin equation and show some of its properties. We define the theoretical and empirical codifference as a measure of dependence for stochastic processes. As an alternative dependence measure we also consider the spectral covariance. These dependence measures replace the autocovariance function when it is not well defined. Results for the theoretical codifference and theoretical spectral covariance functions for the mentioned process are presented. The maximum likelihood estimation procedure is proposed to estimate the parameters of the process arising from the classical Langevin equation, i.e. the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, and of the so-called Cosine process. We also present a simulation study for particular processes arising from this class showing the generation, and the theoretical and empirical counterpart for both codifference and spectral covariance measures.  相似文献

In considering volatility as a stochastic, the aim of this paper is to estimate the four parameters related to a particular stochastic process named P1 and based on a Wiener–Levy process. We present the methodology to estimate its four parameters. We calibrate this theoretical model P1 to the CAC 40 index real data. In the same time, we test the normality of the random variables related to the two Wiener–Levy processes. The calibration is performed using the implemented aforesaid algorithm. We compare the stochastic process P1 with another process named P2 and to the Heston [Closed form solution for options with stochastic volatility with application to bonds and currency options, Rev. Financ. Stud. 6(2) (1993), pp. 327–343] process named H0 and to two other improved Heston processes named H1 and H2. For the empirical study, the same algorithm is used to calibrate the five processes. The calibration is based on a database including the CAC 40 index daily ‘closing fixing’ values for the time period from 3rd January 2005 to 22nd January 2007. The data are divided into 18 classes relative to 18 different contracts of European calls on the CAC 40 index. As a result, we find that, the normality test of the CAC 40 index is rejected which is in accordance with the previous original works dealing with this problem. For the five volatility processes, the normality test is verified almost for the same contracts. We also find that according to the used data, the process P1 and its equivalent H1 are the best for calibration.  相似文献

Continuous-time autoregressive moving average (CARMA) processes with a nonnegative kernel and driven by a nondecreasing Lévy process constitute a useful and very general class of stationary, nonnegative continuous-time processes that have been used, in particular, for the modeling of stochastic volatility. Brockwell, Davis, and Yang (2007) derived efficient estimates of the parameters of a nonnegative Lévy-driven CAR(1) process and showed how the realization of the underlying Lévy process can be estimated from closely-spaced observations of the process itself. In this article we show how the ideas of that article can be generalized to higher order CARMA processes with nonnegative kernel, the key idea being the decomposition of the CARMA process into a sum of dependent Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.  This paper develops a new contrast process for parametric inference of general hidden Markov models, when the hidden chain has a non-compact state space. This contrast is based on the conditional likelihood approach, often used for ARCH-type models. We prove the strong consistency of the conditional likelihood estimators under appropriate conditions. The method is applied to the Kalman filter (for which this contrast and the exact likelihood lead to asymptotically equivalent estimators) and to the discretely observed stochastic volatility models.  相似文献

Bayesian analysis of single-molecule experimental data   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary.  Recent advances in experimental technologies allow scientists to follow biochemical processes on a single-molecule basis, which provides much richer information about chemical dynamics than traditional ensemble-averaged experiments but also raises many new statistical challenges. The paper provides the first likelihood-based statistical analysis of the single-molecule fluorescence lifetime experiment designed to probe the conformational dynamics of a single deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) hairpin molecule. The conformational change is initially treated as a continuous time two-state Markov chain, which is not observable and must be inferred from changes in photon emissions. This model is further complicated by unobserved molecular Brownian diffusions. Beyond the simple two-state model, a competing model that models the energy barrier between the two states of the DNA hairpin as an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process has been suggested in the literature. We first derive the likelihood function of the simple two-state model and then generalize the method to handle complications such as unobserved molecular diffusions and the fluctuating energy barrier. The data augmentation technique and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are developed to sample from the posterior distribution desired. The Bayes factor calculation and posterior estimates of relevant parameters indicate that the fluctuating barrier model fits the data better than the simple two-state model.  相似文献

This article discusses the discretization of continuous-time filters for application to discrete time series sampled at any fixed frequency. In this approach, the filter is first set up directly in continuous-time; since the filter is expressed over a continuous range of lags, we also refer to them as continuous-lag filters. The second step is to discretize the filter itself. This approach applies to different problems in signal extraction, including trend or business cycle analysis, and the method allows for coherent design of discrete filters for observed data sampled as a stock or a flow, for nonstationary data with stochastic trend, and for different sampling frequencies. We derive explicit formulas for the mean squared error (MSE) optimal discretization filters. We also discuss the problem of optimal interpolation for nonstationary processes – namely, how to estimate the values of a process and its components at arbitrary times in-between the sampling times. A number of illustrations of discrete filter coefficient calculations are provided, including the local level model (LLM) trend filter, the smooth trend model (STM) trend filter, and the Band Pass (BP) filter. The essential methodology can be applied to other kinds of trend extraction problems. Finally, we provide an extended demonstration of the method on CPI flow data measured at monthly and annual sampling frequencies.  相似文献

In many phenomena described by stochastic processes, the implementation of an alarm system becomes fundamental to predict the occurrence of future events. In this work we develop an alarm system to predict whether a count process will upcross a certain level and give an alarm whenever the upcrossing level is predicted. We consider count models with parameters being functions of covariates of interest and varying on time. This article presents classical and Bayesian methodology for producing optimal alarm systems. Both methodologies are illustrated and their performance compared through a simulation study. The work finishes with an empirical application to a set of data concerning the number of sunspot on the surface of the sun.  相似文献

The Heston-STAR model is a new class of stochastic volatility models defined by generalizing the Heston model to allow the volatility of the volatility process as well as the correlation between asset log-returns and variance shocks to change across different regimes via smooth transition autoregressive (STAR) functions. The form of the STAR functions is very flexible, much more so than the functions introduced in Jones (J Econom 116:181–224, 2003), and provides the framework for a wide range of stochastic volatility models. A Bayesian inference approach using data augmentation techniques is used for the parameters of our model. We also explore goodness of fit of our Heston-STAR model. Our analysis of the S&P 500 and VIX index demonstrates that the Heston-STAR model is more capable of dealing with large market fluctuations (such as in 2008) compared to the standard Heston model.  相似文献

An analytic methodology for patient enrollment modeling using a Poisson-gamma model is developed by Anisimov & Fedorov (2005–2007). For modeling hierarchic processes associated with enrollment, a new methodology using evolving stochastic processes is proposed. This provides rather general and unified framework to describe various operational processes associated with enrollment. The technique for calculating predictive distributions, mean, and credibility bounds for evolving processes is developed. Some applications to modeling operational characteristics in clinical trials are considered with focus to modeling events associated with incoming and follow-up patients in different settings. For these models, predictive characteristics are derived in a closed form.  相似文献

We investigate marked non-homogeneous Poisson processes using finite mixtures of bivariate normal components to model the spatial intensity function. We employ a Bayesian hierarchical framework for estimation of the parameters in the model, and propose an approach for including covariate information in this context. The methodology is exemplified through an application involving modeling of and inference for tornado occurrences.  相似文献

Risks are usually represented and measured by volatility–covolatility matrices. Wishart processes are models for a dynamic analysis of multivariate risk and describe the evolution of stochastic volatility–covolatility matrices, constrained to be symmetric positive definite. The autoregressive Wishart process (WAR) is the multivariate extension of the Cox, Ingersoll, Ross (CIR) process introduced for scalar stochastic volatility. As a CIR process it allows for closed-form solutions for a number of financial problems, such as term structure of T-bonds and corporate bonds, derivative pricing in a multivariate stochastic volatility model, and the structural model for credit risk. Moreover, the Wishart dynamics are very flexible and are serious competitors for less structural multivariate ARCH models.  相似文献

The linear chirp process is an important class of time series for which the instantaneous frequency changes linearly in time. Linear chirps have been used extensively to model a variety of physical signals such as radar, sonar, and whale clicks (see 1, 5 and 6). We introduce the stochastic linear chirp model and then define the generalized linear chirp (GLC) process as a special case of the G-stationary process studied by Jiang et al. (2006) to model data with time-varying frequencies. We then define GLC(p,q) processes and show that the relationship between stochastic linear chirp processes and GLC(p,q) processes is analogous to that between harmonic and ARMA models. The new methods are then applied to both simulated and actual data sets.  相似文献
