From non-cultural to intercultural principles: a proposal for English classes in Brazilian public schools

This article focuses on English language teaching in Brazilian public schools, based on experiences in primary and secondary education, as well as in Teaching Practicum courses at a university. Through these experiences, the article critiques the overemphasis on grammar and the lack of an intercultural approach. The author engages the reader with a theoretical discussion regarding the connection between language and culture and the possibilities for the implementation of intercultural principles. The article closes with some reflections on what intercultural language learning looks like in practice.     

From cultural knowledge to intercultural communicative competence: changing perspectives on the role of culture in foreign language teaching

Approaches to the concept of culture and teaching cultural competence in a foreign language classroom have been changing over the last decades. The paper summarises, compares, contrasts and evaluates four major approaches to teaching cultural competence in foreign language teaching, that is, knowledge-based approach, contrastive approach, Communicative Language Teaching and intercultural communicative competence approach.     

Examining power through social relations in teachers’ discourse about intercultural education

This study examined power through social relations between entities in the implementation of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in an environment where English is spoken as a foreign language. The examination involved analysing the discourse of two foreign English teachers. Specifically, subject positioning of entities, made apparent through pronominal markers and shifts, as well as discourse meaning, were analysed to establish attributes and relations pertinent to the teaching and learning entities and context. The findings showed how teachers’ epistemologies can be made visible through the examination of discourse. Steven, a participant of this study, indicated that while he seemingly practised an inclusive approach, he was restricted by his teaching context, which appeared to be stricter, and his students’ language proficiency. The second teacher, Tamara, was more democratic in her pedagogical approach, seen through her students’ involvement. This signified a more open work environment as both teacher and student could make necessary adjustments to support the learning objectives. From this study, we could see how intercultural education is still perceived differently. This difference may be due to the parameters of the teachers. This study also showed how teachers’ discourse is a feasible site for the examination of power.     

Discourse Analysis Teaching and Learning for College Students

This paper intends to illustrate how to teach college English especially on discourse analysis. Teachers can use discourse analysis as a research method for investigating their own teaching practices. And learners can benefit from using discourse analysis to explore what language is and how it is used to achieve communicative goals in different contexts.     

论TBLA对商务英语口语测试的启示

基于任务的语言测试(TBLA)作为一种新的语言测试模式,成为了研究热点.口语测试作为语言测试不可或缺的一部分,在强调交际语言教学的今天越来越受到人们的关注.口语测试目标的确定、测试任务的选择和设计以及测试效度的验证是进行基于任务的商务英语口语测试所要研究的主要问题.     

以学生为中心的主题教学模式在英语专业精读课堂的应用与分析

通过刻录光盘和问卷调查的方法,对采用“以学生为中心的主题教学模式”的英语专业精读课堂教师引导、学生交互、活动方式等方面进行系统分析。研究结果表明,与以教师为主导的传统教学方法相比,以学生为中心的主题教学模式能更充分调动学习者的主观能动性和创造性,给学习者提供更多的双向交际的机会,营造一个更好的语言习得环境,因而更有利于英语专业学生的语言习得,提高语言综合应用的实践能力。     

Iranian EFL teachers’ beliefs and perspectives on incorporating culture in EFL classes

ABSTRACT

Researcher and teacher beliefs towards culture and teaching culture have changed over the last decade. Nowadays, the main objective of language teachers has shifted from teaching communicative competence to intercultural communicative competence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the beliefs and perspectives of a number of Iranian EFL teachers towards incorporating culture teaching into their classrooms. More specifically, the study strived to reveal what Iranian EFL teachers thought about the concept of culture, what cultural information they focused on in their classes, and what obstacles they believed should be removed in order to allocate more time to culture teaching in their classes. The non-random purposive sampling method was used to select the participants for this study. A total number of 10 Iranian EFL teachers with a PhD degree in Applied Linguistics participated in this study. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview and a closed-ended questionnaire based on a 5-point scale. The main finding of this study indicated that even though the Iranian EFL teachers favoured including cultural information in their classes, a number of obstacles prevented them from teaching culture in their English classes. Implications for further study have been provided in the article.

本文研究的焦点是一组补偿性策略,并对西北某大学四年级学生交际策略使用情况做了调查研究,旨在评估中国学生在使用英语进行交际时较为喜欢哪一类型的策略。在此研究中,笔者发现人们的认知风格决定他们使用什么样的交际策略。     

我国大豆期货价格与现货价格关系研究

期货市场是国民经济中的重要组成部分,具有价格发现、规避风险和资产配置的功能。本文的研究建立在价格决定理论、合理预期理论和仓储理论基础之上,首先,对我国大豆产业和期货市场的现状进行概括和描述;其次,以黄大豆1号为研究对象,借助相关性分析、ADF检验、协整检验、Granger检验、误差修正模型等实证方法来研究期货价格和现货价格之间的动态关系。实证研究结论表明:期货价格和现货价格高度相关,大豆的现货价格影响期货价格,但影响不具有双向性,说明在我国大豆期货市场上价格发现功能的发挥效率偏低。     

International and intercultural issues in English teaching textbooks: the case of Spain

The sociocultural content of foreign language textbooks has become a concern of scholars and practitioners owing to the fact that the traditional emphasis on purely linguistic issues has been expanded to embrace a language in context approach. This paper studies the English‐speaking communities that are described in English language teaching textbooks marketed in Spain. It examines to what extent an international and/or intercultural approach is a constituent element in their design.

The Conversion of the Predicate in C-E Translation

Chinese is the typical analytic language which shows the grammatical and logical relation through the usage of word order; while English is close to synthetic language, which adopts inflected forms of words to indicate the grammatical relation. But in both Chinese and English, the predicate is the most important linguistic component, playing a vital role in expressing ideas and effective communication. This paper, guided by semantic and communicative translation theories of Peter Newmark, is intended to offer specific translation techniques for the predicate-conversion in C-E translation through the comparison of predicates in construction, forms and ways to indicate tense, aspect, voice and mood.
