Safety culture

'Developing a positive health and safety culture is important if high standards of health and safety are to be achieved and maintained. There is a limit to the health and safety performance an organization can achieve without addressing the contribution which human factors have to play in eliminating occupational accidents and ill health' (David Eves, Deputy Director UK Health and Safety Executive; HSE 1997).

The health care system should produce health

Reform of the U.S. health care system along the lines to be proposed by the Clinton Administration will not be an easy task, and it will not be accomplished quickly. A fundamental objective of the changes should be a health system whose purpose is improvement in the health of U.S. citizens, and not just the provision of services to all. This column is jointly edited by Kevin M. Fickenscher, MD, and David A. Kindig, MD, PhD, chair and member, respectively, of the College's Forum on National Health Policy. Dr. Fickenscher is participating in various advisory capacities on health care in the Clinton Administration, and Dr. Kindig is Senior Advisor to HHS Secretary Donna Shalala.     

The Impact of Contingent Reinforcement on Retail Salespersons' Performance Behaviors:

This study systematically replicates an earlier field experiment (Luthans, Paul & Baker, 1981) that found a contingent reinforcement intervention having a positive impact on functional and dysfunctional performance behaviors of salespersons in a large department store, but no reversal when there was a return to baseline conditions. By using tighter controls in the field setting, the present study found generally similar results during the intervention but, importantly, also found a reversal to occur during the post intervention phase. Implications the results have for behavioral management of salespersons' performance are discussed.
