Copulas are a useful tool to model multivariate distributions. While there exist various families of bivariate copulas, the construction of flexible and yet tractable copulas suitable for high-dimensional applications is much more challenging. This is even more true if one is concerned with the analysis of extreme values. In this paper, we construct a class of one-factor copulas and a family of extreme-value copulas well suited for high-dimensional applications and exhibiting a good balance between tractability and flexibility. The inference for these copulas is performed by using a least-squares estimator based on dependence coefficients. The modeling capabilities of the copulas are illustrated on simulated and real datasets.  相似文献

Risk management of stock portfolios is a fundamental problem for the financial analysis since it indicates the potential losses of an investment at any given time. The objective of this study is to use bivariate static conditional copulas to quantify the dependence structure and to estimate the risk measure Value-at-Risk (VaR). There were selected stocks that have been performing outstandingly on the Brazilian Stock Exchange to compose pairs trading portfolios (B3, Gerdau, Magazine Luiza, and Petrobras). Due to the flexibility that this methodology offers in the construction of multivariate distributions and risk aggregation in finance, we used the copula-APARCH approach with the Normal, T-student, and Joe-Clayton copula functions. In most scenarios, the results showed a pattern of dependence at the extremes. Moreover, the copula form seems not to be relevant for VaR estimation, since in most portfolios the appropriate copulas lead to significant VaR estimates. It has found that the best models fitted provided conservative risk measures, estimates at 5% and 1%, in a scenario more aggressive.  相似文献

Copulas have proved to be very successful tools for the flexible modeling of dependence. Bivariate copulas have been deeply researched in recent years, while building higher-dimensional copulas is still recognized to be a difficult task. In this paper, we study the higher-dimensional dependent reliability systems using a type of decomposition called “vine,” by which a multivariate distribution can be decomposed into a cascade of bivariate copulas. Some equations of system reliability for parallel, series, and k-out-of-n systems are obtained and then decomposed based on C-vine and D-vine copulas. Finally, a shutdown system is considered to illustrate the results obtained in the paper.  相似文献

Extreme-value copulas arise in the asymptotic theory for componentwise maxima of independent random samples. An extreme-value copula is determined by its Pickands dependence function, which is a function on the unit simplex subject to certain shape constraints that arise from an integral transform of an underlying measure called spectral measure. Multivariate extensions are provided of certain rank-based nonparametric estimators of the Pickands dependence function. The shape constraint that the estimator should itself be a Pickands dependence function is enforced by replacing an initial estimator by its best least-squares approximation in the set of Pickands dependence functions having a discrete spectral measure supported on a sufficiently fine grid. Weak convergence of the standardized estimators is demonstrated and the finite-sample performance of the estimators is investigated by means of a simulation experiment.  相似文献

We define, in a probabilistic way, a parametric family of multivariate extreme value distributions. We derive its copula, which is a mixture of several complete dependent copulas and total independent copulas, and the bivariate tail dependence and extremal coefficients. Based on the obtained results for these coefficients, we propose a method to build multivariate extreme value distributions with prescribed tail/extremal coefficients. We illustrate the results with examples.  相似文献

In this paper we introduced a single parameter, absolutely continuous and radially symmetric bivariate extension of the Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern (FGM) family of copulas. Specifically, this extension measures the higher negative dependencies than most FGM extensions available in literature. Closed-form formulas for distribution, quantile, density, conditional distribution, regression, Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau, and Gini's gamma are obtained. In addition, a formula for random variate generations is presented in closed-form to facilitate simulation studies. We conduct both paired and multiple comparisons with Frank, Gaussian, and Plackett copulas to investigate the performance based on Vuong's test. Furthermore, the new copula is compared with Frank, Gaussian, and Plackett copulas using both Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramér-von Mises type test statistics. Finally, a bivariate dataset is analyzed to compare and illustrate the flexibility of the new copula for negative dependence.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a new class of bivariate distributions whose marginals are beta-generated distributions. Copulas are employed to construct this bivariate extension of the beta-generated distributions. It is shown that when Archimedean copulas and convex beta generators are used in generating bivariate distributions, the copulas of the resulting distributions also belong to the Archimedean family. The dependence of the proposed bivariate distributions is examined. Simulation results for beta generators and an application to financial risk management are presented.  相似文献

Multivariate copula models are commonly used in place of Gaussian dependence models when plots of the data suggest tail dependence and tail asymmetry. In these cases, it is useful to have simple statistics to summarize the strength of dependence in different joint tails. Measures of monotone association such as Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho are insufficient to distinguish commonly used parametric bivariate families with different tail properties. We propose lower and upper tail-weighted bivariate measures of dependence as additional scalar measures to distinguish bivariate copulas with roughly the same overall monotone dependence. These measures allow the efficient estimation of strength of dependence in the joint tails and can be used as a guide for selection of bivariate linking copulas in vine and factor models as well as for assessing the adequacy of fit of multivariate copula models. We apply the tail-weighted measures of dependence to a financial data set and show that the measures better discriminate models with different tail properties compared to commonly used risk measures – the portfolio value-at-risk and conditional tail expectation.  相似文献

Vine copulas are a flexible class of dependence models consisting of bivariate building blocks and have proven to be particularly useful in high dimensions. Classical model distance measures require multivariate integration and thus suffer from the curse of dimensionality. In this paper, we provide numerically tractable methods to measure the distance between two vine copulas even in high dimensions. For this purpose, we consecutively develop three new distance measures based on the Kullback–Leibler distance, using the result that it can be expressed as the sum over expectations of KL distances between univariate conditional densities, which can be easily obtained for vine copulas. To reduce numerical calculations, we approximate these expectations on adequately designed grids, outperforming Monte Carlo integration with respect to computational time. For the sake of interpretability, we provide a baseline calibration for the proposed distance measures. We further develop similar substitutes for the Jeffreys distance, a symmetrized version of the Kullback–Leibler distance. In numerous examples and applications, we illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the developed distance measures.  相似文献

The Joy of Copulas: Bivariate Distributions with Uniform Marginals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe a class of bivariate distributions whose marginals are uniform on the unit interval. Such distributions are often called “copulas.” The particular copulas we present are especially well suited for use in undergraduate mathematical statistics courses, as many of their basic properties can be derived using elementary calculus. In particular, we show how these copulas can be used to illustrate the existence of distributions with singular components and to give a geometric interpretation to Kendall's tau.  相似文献

Non-parametric Estimation of Tail Dependence   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract.  Dependencies between extreme events (extremal dependencies) are attracting an increasing attention in modern risk management. In practice, the concept of tail dependence represents the current standard to describe the amount of extremal dependence. In theory, multi-variate extreme-value theory turns out to be the natural choice to model the latter dependencies. The present paper embeds tail dependence into the concept of tail copulae which describes the dependence structure in the tail of multivariate distributions but works more generally. Various non-parametric estimators for tail copulae and tail dependence are discussed, and weak convergence, asymptotic normality, and strong consistency of these estimators are shown by means of a functional delta method. Further, weak convergence of a general upper-order rank-statistics for extreme events is investigated and the relationship to tail dependence is provided. A simulation study compares the introduced estimators and two financial data sets were analysed by our methods.  相似文献

Abstract. A non‐parametric rank‐based test of exchangeability for bivariate extreme‐value copulas is first proposed. The two key ingredients of the suggested approach are the non‐parametric rank‐based estimators of the Pickands dependence function recently studied by Genest and Segers, and a multiplier technique for obtaining approximate p‐values for the derived statistics. The proposed approach is then extended to left‐tail decreasing dependence structures that are not necessarily extreme‐value copulas. Large‐scale Monte Carlo experiments are used to investigate the level and power of the various versions of the test and show that the proposed procedure can be substantially more powerful than tests of exchangeability derived directly from the empirical copula. The approach is illustrated on well‐known financial data.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new clustering procedure for financial instruments. Unlike the prevalent clustering procedures based on time series analysis, our procedure employs the jump tail dependence coefficient as the dissimilarity measure, assuming that the observed logarithm of the prices/indices of the financial instruments are embedded into multidimensional Lévy processes. The efficiency of our proposed clustering procedure is tested by a simulation study. Finally, with the help of the real data of country indices we illustrate that our clustering procedure could help investors avoid potential huge losses when constructing portfolios.  相似文献

Copula models have become increasingly popular for modelling the dependence structure in multivariate survival data. The two-parameter Archimedean family of Power Variance Function (PVF) copulas includes the Clayton, Positive Stable (Gumbel) and Inverse Gaussian copulas as special or limiting cases, thus offers a unified approach to fitting these important copulas. Two-stage frequentist procedures for estimating the marginal distributions and the PVF copula have been suggested by Andersen (Lifetime Data Anal 11:333–350, 2005), Massonnet et al. (J Stat Plann Inference 139(11):3865–3877, 2009) and Prenen et al. (J R Stat Soc Ser B 79(2):483–505, 2017) which first estimate the marginal distributions and conditional on these in a second step to estimate the PVF copula parameters. Here we explore an one-stage Bayesian approach that simultaneously estimates the marginal and the PVF copula parameters. For the marginal distributions, we consider both parametric as well as semiparametric models. We propose a new method to simulate uniform pairs with PVF dependence structure based on conditional sampling for copulas and on numerical approximation to solve a target equation. In a simulation study, small sample properties of the Bayesian estimators are explored. We illustrate the usefulness of the methodology using data on times to appendectomy for adult twins in the Australian NH&MRC Twin registry. Parameters of the marginal distributions and the PVF copula are simultaneously estimated in a parametric as well as a semiparametric approach where the marginal distributions are modelled using Weibull and piecewise exponential distributions, respectively.  相似文献

A dual class of the multivariate distributions of Marshall–Olkin type is introduced, and their copulas are presented and utilized to derive explicit expressions of the distributional tail dependencies, which describe the amount of dependence in the upper-orthant tail or lower-orthant tail of a multivariate distribution and can be used in the study of dependence among extreme values. A sufficient condition under which tail dependencies of two such distributions can be compared are obtained. Some examples are also presented to illustrate our results.  相似文献

Vine copulas are a highly flexible class of dependence models, which are based on the decomposition of the density into bivariate building blocks. For applications one usually makes the simplifying assumption that copulas of conditional distributions are independent of the variables on which they are conditioned. However this assumption has been criticised for being too restrictive. We examine both simplified and non‐simplified vine copulas in three dimensions and investigate conceptual differences. We show and compare contour surfaces of three‐dimensional vine copula models, which prove to be much more informative than the contour lines of the bivariate marginals. Our investigation shows that non‐simplified vine copulas can exhibit arbitrarily irregular shapes, whereas simplified vine copulas appear to be smooth extrapolations of their bivariate margins to three dimensions. In addition to a variety of constructed examples, we also investigate a three‐dimensional subset of the well‐known uranium data set and visually detect the fact that a non‐simplified vine copula is necessary to capture its complex dependence structure.  相似文献

This paper proposes a copula directional dependence by using a bivariate Gaussian copula beta regression with Stochastic Volatility (SV) models for marginal distributions. With the asymmetric copula generated by the composition of two Plackett copulas, we show that our SV copula directional dependence by the Gaussian copula beta regression model is superior to the Kim and Hwang (2016) copula directional dependence by an asymmetric GARCH model in terms of the percent relative efficiency of bias and mean squared error. To validate our proposed method with the real data, we use Brent Crude Daily Price (BRENT), West Texas Intermediate Daily Price (WTI), the Standard & Poor’s 500 (SP) and US 10-Year Treasury Constant Maturity Rate (TCM) so that our copula SV directional dependence is overall superior to the Kim and Hwang (2016) copula directional dependence by an asymmetric GARCH model in terms of precision by the percent relative efficiency of mean squared error. In terms of forecasting using the real financial data, we also show that the Bayesian SV model of the uniform transformed data by a copula conditional distribution yields an improvement on the volatility models such as GARCH and SV.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, we create a decomposition that represents and describes the depen-dence structure between two variables. Since copulas provide a deep understanding of the dependence structure by eliminating the effects of the marginals, they play a key role in this study. We define a discretized copula density matrix and decompose it into a set of permutation matrices by using the Birkhoff–von Neumann theorem. This decomposition provides a way to effectively apply the concepts of copulas to solve problems in multivariate statistical data analysis.  相似文献
