In this paper we propose test statistics based on Fisher's method of combining tests for hypotheses involving two or more parameters simultaneously, It Is shown that these tests are asymptotically efficient In the sense of Bahadur, It is then shown how these tests can be modified to give sequential test procedures which are efficient in the sense of Berk and Brown (1978).

The results in section 3 generalize the work of Perng (1977) and Durairajan (1980).  相似文献

The inverse Gaussian family of non negative, skewed random variables is analytically simple, and its inference theory is well known to be analogous to the normal theory in numerous ways. Hence, it is widely used for modeling non negative positively skewed data. In this note, we consider the problem of testing homogeneity of order restricted means of several inverse Gaussian populations with a common unknown scale parameter using an approach based on the classical methods, such as Fisher's, for combining independent tests. Unlike the likelihood approach which can only be readily applied to a limited number of restrictions and the settings of equal sample sizes, this approach is applicable to problems involving a broad variety of order restrictions and arbitrary sample size settings, and most importantly, no new null distributions are needed. An empirical power study shows that, in case of the simple order, the test based on Fisher's combination method compares reasonably with the corresponding likelihood ratio procedure.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Motivated by an example in marine science, we use Fisher’s method to combine independent likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) and asymptotic independent score tests to assess the equivalence of two zero-inflated Beta populations (mixture distributions with three parameters). For each test, test statistics for the three individual parameters are combined into a single statistic to address the overall difference between the two populations. We also develop non parametric and semiparametric permutation-based tests for simultaneously comparing two or three features of unknown populations. Simulations show that the likelihood-based tests perform well for large sample sizes and that the statistics based on combining LRT statistics outperforms the ones based on combining score test statistics. The permutation-based tests have overall better performance in terms of both power and type I error rate. Our methods are easy to implement and computationally efficient, and can be expanded to more than two populations and to other multiple parameter families. The permutation tests are entirely generic and can be useful in various applications dealing with zero (or other) inflation.  相似文献

We derive two C(α) statistics and the likelihood-ratio statistic for testing the equality of several correlation coefficients, from k ≥ 2 independent random samples from bivariate normal populations. The asymptotic relationship of the C(α) tests, the likelihood-ratio test, and a statistic based on the normality assumption of Fisher's Z-transform of the sample correlation coefficient is established. A comparative performance study, in terms of size and power, is then conducted by Monte Carlo simulations. The likelihood-ratio statistic is often too liberal, and the statistic based on Fisher's Z-transform is conservative. The performance of the two C(α) statistics is identical. They maintain significance level well and have almost the same power as the other statistics when empirically calculated critical values of the same size are used. The C(α) statistic based on a noniterative estimate of the common correlation coefficient (based on Fisher's Z-transform) is recommended.  相似文献

The authors propose a class of statistics based on Rao's score for the sequential testing of composite hypotheses comparing two treatments (populations). Asymptotic approximations of the statistics lead them to propose sequential tests and to derive their monitoring boundaries. As special cases, they construct sequential versions of the two‐sample t‐test for normal populations and two‐sample z‐score tests for binomial populations. The proposed algorithms are simple and easy to compute, as no numerical integration is required. Furthermore, the user can analyze the data at any time regardless of how many inspections have been made. Monte Carlo simulations allow the authors to compare the power and the average stopping time (also known as average sample number) of the proposed tests to those of nonsequential and group sequential tests. A two‐armed comparative clinical trial in patients with adult leukemia allows them to illustrate the efficiency of their methods in the case of binary responses.  相似文献

A method for constructing two-stage (double samble) tests is presented which does not require the evaluation of complicated bivariate distribution function. The procedure results from a modification of Fisher's method for combining independent tests of significance and is distribution free in the way it combines the test results from the two sampies. However, the one sample test statistics for the two samples are assumed to have continuous distributions and may be parametric. A rule is also given or the selection of a particular test out of a family of possible two-stage tests which can be generated by this method. Specific examples are given and comparisons are made with two double sample tests which have previously been presented in the literature.  相似文献

Fisher's method of combining independent tests is used to construct tests of means of multivariate normal populations when the covariance matrix has intraclass correlation structure. Monte Carlo studies are reported which show that the tests are more powerful than Hotelling's T 2-test in both one and two sample situations.  相似文献

For clinical trials with interim analyses, there have been methodologies and software to calculate boundaries for comparing binomial, normal, and survival data from two treatment groups. Jermison & Turnbull (1991) extended Pocock (1977) and O' Brien- Fleming (1979) boundaries to t-tests, x2-tests and F-tests for comparing normal data from several treatment groups. This paper demonstrates that the above boundaries can be applied to a wide variety of test statistics based on general parametric settings. We show that asymptotically the x2 boundaries as well as the corresponding nominal significance levels calculated by Jennison & Turnbull can be applied to interim analyses based on the score test, the Wald test, and the likelihood ratio test for general parametric models. Based on the results of this paper, currently available software in group sequential testing can be used to calculate. the nominal significance levels (or boundaries) for group sequential testing based on logistic regression, A NOVA, and other parametric methods.  相似文献

Fisher's exact test for two-by-two contingency tables has repeatedly been criticized as being too conservative. These criticisms arise most frequently in the context of a planned experiment for which the numbers of successes in each of two experimental groups are assumed to be binomially distributed. It is argued here that the binomial model is often unrealistic, and that the departures from the binomial assumptions reduce the conservatism in Fisher's exact test. Further discussion supports a recent claim of Barnard (1989) that the residual conservatism is attributable, not to any additional information used by the competing method, but to the discrete nature of the test, and can be drastically reduced through the use of Lancaster's mid-p-value. The binomial model is not recommended in that it depends on extra, questionable assumptions.  相似文献

Two-treatment multicentre clinical trials are very common in practice. In cases where a non-parametric analysis is appropriate, a rank-sum test for grouped data called the van Elteren test can be applied. As an alternative approach, one may apply a combination test such as Fisher's combination test or the inverse normal combination test (also called Liptak's method) in order to combine centre-specific P-values. If there are no ties and no differences between centres with regard to the groups’ sample sizes, the inverse normal combination test using centre-specific Wilcoxon rank-sum tests is equivalent to the van Elteren test. In this paper, the van Elteren test is compared with Fisher's combination test based on Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Data from two multicentre trials as well as simulated data indicate that Fisher's combination of P-values is more powerful than the van Elteren test in realistic scenarios, i.e. when there are large differences between the centres’ P-values, some quantitative interaction between treatment and centre, and/or heterogeneity in variability. The combination approach opens the possibility of using statistics other than the rank sum, and it is also a suitable method for more complicated designs, e.g. when covariates such as age or gender are included in the analysis.  相似文献

Testing homogeneity is a fundamental problem in finite mixture models. It has been investigated by many researchers and most of the existing works have focused on the univariate case. In this article, the authors extend the use of the EM‐test for testing homogeneity to multivariate mixture models. They show that the EM‐test statistic asymptotically has the same distribution as a certain transformation of a single multivariate normal vector. On the basis of this result, they suggest a resampling procedure to approximate the P‐value of the EM‐test. Simulation studies show that the EM‐test has accurate type I errors and adequate power, and is more powerful and computationally efficient than the bootstrap likelihood ratio test. Two real data sets are analysed to illustrate the application of our theoretical results. The Canadian Journal of Statistics 39: 218–238; 2011 © 2011 Statistical Society of Canada  相似文献

Confidence intervals for the difference of two binomial proportions are well known, however, confidence intervals for the weighted sum of two binomial proportions are less studied. We develop and compare seven methods for constructing confidence intervals for the weighted sum of two independent binomial proportions. The interval estimates are constructed by inverting the Wald test, the score test and the Likelihood ratio test. The weights can be negative, so our results generalize those for the difference between two independent proportions. We provide a numerical study that shows that these confidence intervals based on large‐sample approximations perform very well, even when a relatively small amount of data is available. The intervals based on the inversion of the score test showed the best performance. Finally, we show that as for the difference of two binomial proportions, adding four pseudo‐outcomes to the Wald interval for the weighted sum of two binomial proportions improves its coverage significantly, and we provide a justification for this correction.  相似文献

The well known step-down procedure for MANOVA given by J. Roy (1958) can be modified by combining the step-down tests using a B-optimal combination method such as Fisher's. The Fisherian detour of the stepwise MANOVA is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to the likelihood ratio test.  相似文献

We discuss smoothed rank statistics for testing the location shift parameter of the two-sample problem. They are based on discrete test statistics – the median and Wilcoxon's rank sum tests. For the one-sample problem, Maesono et al. [Smoothed nonparametric tests and their properties. arXiv preprint. 2016; ArXiv:1610.02145] reported that some nonparametric discrete tests have a problem with their p-values because of their discreteness. The p-values of Wilcoxon's test are frequently smaller than those of the median test in the tail area. This leads to an arbitrary choice of the median and Wilcoxon's rank sum tests. To overcome this problem, we propose smoothed versions of those tests. The smoothed tests inherit the good properties of the original tests and are asymptotically equivalent to them. We study the significance probabilities and local asymptotic powers of the proposed tests.  相似文献

A stratified study is often designed for adjusting several independent trials in modern medical research. We consider the problem of non-inferiority tests and sample size determinations for a nonzero risk difference in stratified matched-pair studies, and develop the likelihood ratio and Wald-type weighted statistics for testing a null hypothesis of non-zero risk difference for each stratum in stratified matched-pair studies on the basis of (1) the sample-based method and (2) the constrained maximum likelihood estimation (CMLE) method. Sample size formulae for the above proposed statistics are derived, and several choices of weights for Wald-type weighted statistics are considered. We evaluate the performance of the proposed tests according to type I error rates and empirical powers via simulation studies. Empirical results show that (1) the likelihood ratio and the Wald-type CMLE test based on harmonic means of the stratum-specific sample size (SSIZE) weight (the Cochran's test) behave satisfactorily in the sense that their significance levels are much closer to the prespecified nominal level; (2) the likelihood ratio test is better than Nam's [2006. Non-inferiority of new procedure to standard procedure in stratified matched-pair design. Biometrical J. 48, 966–977] score test; (3) the sample sizes obtained by using SSIZE weight are smaller than other weighted statistics in general; (4) the Cochran's test statistic is generally much better than other weighted statistics with CMLE method. A real example from a clinical laboratory study is used to illustrate the proposed methodologies.  相似文献

Fisher's exact test, difference in proportions, log odds ratio, Pearson's chi-squared, and likelihood ratio are compared as test statistics for testing independence of two dichotomous factors when the associated p values are computed by using the conditional distribution given the marginals. The statistics listed above that can be used for a one-sided alternative give identical p values. For a two-sided alternative, many of the above statistics lead to different p values. The p values are shown to differ only by which tables in the opposite tail from the observed table are considered more extreme than the observed table.  相似文献

Several unconditional exact tests, which are constructed to control the Type I error rate at the nominal level, for comparing two independent Poisson rates are proposed and compared to the conditional exact test using a binomial distribution. The unconditional exact test using binomial p-value, likelihood ratio, or efficient score as the test statistic improves the power in general, and are therefore recommended. Unconditional exact tests using Wald statistics, whether on the original or square-root scale, may be substantially less powerful than the conditional exact test, and is not recommended. An example is provided from a cardiovascular trial.  相似文献

In this article, procedures are proposed to test the hypothesis of equality of two or more regression functions. Tests are proposed by p-values, first under homoscedastic regression model, which are derived using fiducial method based on cubic spline interpolation. Then, we construct a test in the heteroscedastic case based on Fisher's method of combining independent tests. We study the behaviors of the tests by simulation experiments, in which comparisons with other tests are also given. The proposed tests have good performances. Finally, an application to a data set are given to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed test in practice.  相似文献

For testing the equality of two independent binomial populations the Fisher exact test and the chi-squared test with Yates's continuity correction are often suggested for small and intermediate size samples. The use of these tests is inappropriate in that they are extremely conservative. In this article we demonstrate that, even for small samples, the uncorrected chi-squared test (i.e., the Pearson chi-squared test) and the two-independent-sample t test are robust in that their actual significance levels are usually close to or smaller than the nominal levels. We encourage the use of these latter two tests.  相似文献

The authors show how Kendall's tau can be adapted to test against serial dependence in a univariate time series context. They provide formulas for the mean and variance of circular and noncircular versions of this statistic, and they prove its asymptotic normality under the hypothesis of independence. They present also a Monte Carlo study comparing the power and size of a test based on Kendall's tau with the power and size of competing procedures based on alternative parametric and nonparametric measures of serial dependence. In particular, their simulations indicate that Kendall's tau outperforms Spearman's rho in detecting first‐order autoregressive dependence, despite the fact that these two statistics are asymptotically equivalent under the null hypothesis, as well as under local alternatives.  相似文献
