Exploring the nutritional vulnerability of homeless men in a Canadian urban setting

Abstract

Homelessness, Aboriginal ethnicity, and nutritional vulnerability are key determinants of health. Substance abuse further compounds health risk. This study explored the nutritional vulnerability of homeless men, some of who were solvent-users, to assess nutrition-related chronic disease risk factors. Anthropometric data were used to calculate disease risk using body mass index. Diet was assessed using a 24-hr food recall and data were compared to Canada’s Food Guide recommendations. A significant proportion of participants had low intakes of vegetables and fruit and milk and alternatives. More than half of the participants met the intake recommendations for grain servings and meat and alternatives. Solvent-using participants consumed significantly higher intakes of vegetables and fruit, grain products, and other foods and beverages, than non-solvent using men. More than half of the participants were classified as overweight or obese. Healthy food consumption was influenced by lack of stable housing, reliance on charitable food, and substance abuse.     

President's proposed budget would slash treatment and prevention funding

We had a feeling of déjà vu when the White House sent its proposed budget to Congress last week. Similar to past years, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) would be decimated, moving the $100 million Drug‐Free Communities program to the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). There's no additional money in the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) block grant and cuts to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, CSAP and SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

The Role of the Pharmacist in the Delivery of Family Planning Services to College Students

Abstract

A survey was conducted among college students to determine their assessment of the potential of the pharmacist as a family planning counselor. Pharmacists were seen as an appropriate source of contraceptive information for many contraceptive methods, but few respondents had actually consulted a pharmacist. Pharmacists were viewed as competent to provide contraceptive information by a slight majority of the respondents, but only half indicated they would use the pharmacist as a source of this kind of information.
