“Strange thing—human relationships—for a Government to set up a Royal Commission on.” That is a comment I have heard more than once. It has been accompanied by an aloofness, a slight irritability, keeping the Report at arm's length and unread. That is from one section of the public. There are many other reactions. And there are our colleagues, many of whom have said how very important the Report is, and they have read it. Midway between these and other polarized viewpoints stands the Report itself, a long important essay in societal self-awareness. No wonder it has aroused much contradictory response.

This study explored the relationship of exposure to violence and children's perceptions of neighborhood safety and children's adaptive functioning. It used a cross-sectional quadi-experimental design of 300 inner-city children and a bttery of standardized measures, which included the Child Maltreatment Classification Scheme, Exposure to Community Violence Scale, the Domains of Safety Subscale for Neighborhood, and the Child Behavior Checklist-Teacher's Report form. Hierarchal regression analysis revealed that child maltreatment history and perceptions of neighborhood safety were significantly related to children's overall adaptive functioning. Social workers can help by engaging in efforts to increase neighborhood safety and reinforcing positive adaptive psychosocial functioning of children at risk or exposed to violence.

The World Bank's World Development Report 2006 addresses equity and development, defining equity as respect for equal opportunities combined with the avoidance of absolute deprivation. Equity has up to now remained a marginal issue in development economics. This detailed analysis endeavours to place the subject within the context of the evolution of World Bank thinking and policies. The wealth of the concept is illustrated, the downside being the difficulty in defining it accurately. We also emphasise the gap between the prospects opened up by such an enlargement of development goals and the report's policy recommendations, which are generally merely an extension of the World Bank's traditional analyses.

The Woods Report on Canadian Industrial Relations made a number of claims concerning significant changes in the character of the relations between employers and employees during the mid-1960s. The authors of the report claimed that workers' aspirations were changing both qualitatively and quantitatively in a way which created substantial industrial unrest. This position has been criticised by Douglas Smith (1972, 1976). Through a close examination of the pattern of determinants of industrial conflict in postwar Ontario, this paper shows that though some of the claims made in the Woods Report are indefensible, there was at least an important element of truth in the interpreta-tion of the authors of that Report.

Adolescents face barriers to mental health services and value confidentiality when seeking help. Kids Help Phone (KHP) is Canada's only free and confidential service for adolescents seeking help over the Internet. 188 participants responded to questionnaires to determine the client characteristics in terms of gender, age, culture, generational status, and socioeconomic status (SES), as well as their risk levels and types of presenting problems. Efficacy of service was also evaluated. Clients' posts were analyzed qualitatively for symptomology indicative of the Youth Self Report (YSR) syndromes, as well as for the level of risk and topics discussed. Level of distress, level of difficulty of the problem, and self-efficacy were evaluated using client self-report scales and found to improve after counselling. A non-significant positive trend was found in clients' self-efficacy after counselling. Distributions of demographic characteristics are presented alongside youths' reasons for choosing the Internet instead of the telephone. Implications for service delivery are discussed.

Abstract

This brief report reviews the use of MMPI-2 computer-generated interpretive reports in child custody evaluations. Particular attention was aimed at the Caldwell Report’s MMPI-2 Custody Report. Considering the recent temporary closure of the Caldwell Report, this article will discuss what scoring and report options remain currently for interpretive custody reports. A perspective is shared that a dependence on computer-generated interpretive reports is detrimental to the science and practice of custody evaluation work. Finally, the author calls for future and revised computer-generated interpretive reports to include more information regarding a link to conclusions, gender bias, and peer reviewed research.

Media coverage of the death of Baby P revived national concerns about the standard of child safeguarding practice in England following the implementation of widespread structural changes in response to the Victoria Climbié Inquiry chaired by Lord Laming in 2003. This paper discusses the recommendations of Lord Laming's recent Progress Report. It questions whether the scale of the challenge in improving child protection is fully recognised and considers briefly the culture of social care in the UK and the barriers to effective reform.
