'They More or Less Blended in with Society': Changing Attitudes to European Migrant Workers in Post-war Lancashire

European volunteer workers have received comparatively little attention in the history of British post-war immigration, with greater coverage given to, for example, demobilised members of the Polish Resettlement Corps. This paper is based upon oral history interviews with a group of European immigrants, predominantly European volunteer workers, and local Lancastrians who started work in the Lancashire cotton industry between 1946 and 1951, and examines perceptions of how they integrated into British life in a variety of domains. The paper emphasises that 'blending-in' was context-dependent, with a sense of being welcomed and fitting-in applying to certain domains and in certain situations but not necessarily in others. It argues that migration fosters particular cultural attitudes and practices amongst both migrants and hosts as social identities are produced and reproduced, changed and challenged.     

International development by Chinese enterprises: Key issues for the future

Chinese state-owned companies are beginning to be players on the world stage. Within a developed country, such as the UK, however, the majority of investments are at present small-scale operations in trading and financial services. There are signs of the larger, longer-established enterprises evolving, as planned, towards transnational conglomerates, albeit hampered by state ownership. While not yet major competitors, Chinese enterprises offer opportunities as suppliers to and partners with UK companies; foreign direct investment in manufacturing industry in the UK is still some way off.     

Moments Determine the Tail of a Distribution (But Not Much Else)

How much information does a finite collection of moments carry about the underlying distribution? We revive an old bound, give a new, simple formula for its calculation, and demonstrate that although very little can be said about the central part of the distribution, the tail is much more sharply defined.     

Assessing Fitness to Practise and Managing Work‐based Placement

This article describes the experience of Nottingham and Birmingham Universities in partnership with workers from Advocacy In Action and shows that service‐users, carers and other eligible citizens can and should be involved in deciding fitness for practice and in the managing of that practice, and that such involvement enhances the student experience and lays the foundations for partnership working in the professional arena. The users and citizen stakeholders of social services are a valuable resource in respect of all aspects of service planning, delivery and control. In respect of social work education, their involvement is too valuable an opportunity to miss and we look forward to further exciting partnerships in the field of practice learning.
