Recurrent event data occur in many clinical and observational studies (Cook and Lawless, Analysis of recurrent event data, 2007) and in these situations, there may exist a terminal event such as death that is related to the recurrent event of interest (Ghosh and Lin, Biometrics 56:554–562, 2000; Wang et al., J Am Stat Assoc 96:1057–1065, 2001; Huang and Wang, J Am Stat Assoc 99:1153–1165, 2004; Ye et al., Biometrics 63:78–87, 2007). In addition, sometimes there may exist more than one type of recurrent events, that is, one faces multivariate recurrent event data with some dependent terminal event (Chen and Cook, Biostatistics 5:129–143, 2004). It is apparent that for the analysis of such data, one has to take into account the dependence both among different types of recurrent events and between the recurrent and terminal events. In this paper, we propose a joint modeling approach for regression analysis of the data and both finite and asymptotic properties of the resulting estimates of unknown parameters are established. The methodology is applied to a set of bivariate recurrent event data arising from a study of leukemia patients.  相似文献

This article discusses regression analysis of mixed interval-censored failure time data. Such data frequently occur across a variety of settings, including clinical trials, epidemiologic investigations, and many other biomedical studies with a follow-up component. For example, mixed failure times are commonly found in the two largest studies of long-term survivorship after childhood cancer, the datasets that motivated this work. However, most existing methods for failure time data consider only right-censored or only interval-censored failure times, not the more general case where times may be mixed. Additionally, among regression models developed for mixed interval-censored failure times, the proportional hazards formulation is generally assumed. It is well-known that the proportional hazards model may be inappropriate in certain situations, and alternatives are needed to analyze mixed failure time data in such cases. To fill this need, we develop a maximum likelihood estimation procedure for the proportional odds regression model with mixed interval-censored data. We show that the resulting estimators are consistent and asymptotically Gaussian. An extensive simulation study is performed to assess the finite-sample properties of the method, and this investigation indicates that the proposed method works well for many practical situations. We then apply our approach to examine the impact of age at cranial radiation therapy on risk of growth hormone deficiency in long-term survivors of childhood cancer.  相似文献

When firms invest in a shared supplier, one key concern is whether the invested capacity will be used for a competitor. In practice, this concern is addressed by restricting the use of the capacity. We consider what happens when two competing firms invest in a shared supplier. We consider two scenarios that differ in how capacity is used: exclusive capacity and first‐priority capacity. We model firms' investment and production decisions, and analyze the equilibrium outcomes in terms of the number of investing firms and capacity levels for each scenario; realized capacity is a stochastic function of investment levels. We also identify conditions under which the spillover effect occurs, where one firm taps into the other firm's invested capacity. Although the spillover supposedly intensifies competition, it actually discourages firms' investment. We also characterize the firms' and supplier's preference about the capacity type. While the non‐investing firm always prefers spillovers from the first‐priority capacity, the investing firm does not always want to shut off the other firm's access to its leftover capacity, especially when allowing spillover induces the other firm not to invest. The supplier's preference depends on the trade‐off between over‐investment and flexibility.  相似文献

We study the online rectangle filling problem which arises in channel aware scheduling of wireless networks, and present deterministic and randomized results for algorithms that are allowed a k-lookahead for k≥2. Our main result is a deterministic min {1.848,1+2/(k−1)}-competitive online algorithm. This is the first algorithm for this problem with a competitive ratio approaching 1 as k approaches +∞. The previous best-known solution for this problem has a competitive ratio of 2 for any k≥2. We also present a randomized online algorithm with a competitive ratio of 1+1/(k+1). Our final result is a closely matching lower bound (also proved in this paper) of $1+1/(\sqrt{k+2}+\sqrt{k+1})^{2}>1+1/(4(k+2))$1+1/(\sqrt{k+2}+\sqrt{k+1})^{2}>1+1/(4(k+2)) on the competitive ratio of any randomized online algorithm against an oblivious adversary. These are the first known results for randomized algorithms for this problem.  相似文献

New drug discovery in the pediatrics has dramatically improved survival, but with long- term adverse events. This motivates the examination of adverse outcomes such as long-term toxicity in a phase IV trial. An ideal approach to monitor long-term toxicity is to systematically follow the survivors, which is generally not feasible. Instead, cross-sectional surveys are conducted in Hudson et al. (2007 Hudson , M. M. , Rai , S. N. , Nunez , C. , Merchant , T. E. , Marina , N. M. , Zalamea , N. , Cox , C. , Phipps , S. , Pompeu , R. , Rosenthal , D. ( 2007 ). Noninvasive evaluation of late anthracycline cardiac toxicity in childhood cancer survivors . J. Clin. Summary.  Random variables which are positive linear combinations of positive independent random variables can have heavily right-skewed finite sample distributions even though they might be asymptotically normally distributed. We provide a simple method of determining an appropriate power transformation to improve the normal approximation in small samples. Our method contains the Wilson–Hilferty cube root transformation for χ 2 random variables as a special case. We also provide some important examples, including test statistics of goodness-of-fit and tail index estimators, where such power transformations can be applied. In particular, we study the small sample behaviour of two goodness-of-fit tests for time series models which have been proposed recently in the literature. Both tests are generalizations of the popular Box–Ljung–Pierce portmanteau test, one in the time domain and the other in the frequency domain. A power transformation with a finite sample mean and variance correction is proposed, which ameliorates the small sample effect. It is found that the corrected versions of the tests have markedly better size properties. The correction is also found to result in an overall increase in power which can be significant under certain alternatives. Furthermore, the corrected tests also have better power than the Box–Ljung–Pierce portmanteau test, unlike the uncorrected versions.  相似文献

An adding-back model is constructed for studying multiple outliers and influential observations. A logarithmic functional form for some influence measures having a better justification for plotting purposes is suggested. Two graphical methods with contours of constant measure values are proposed.
