Connecting Parliament to the Public via the Internet

A number of scholars have argued that the Internet could strengthen representative democracy. This article presents two case studies of online consultations run on behalf of the UK Parliament and tests a series of hypotheses about online public deliberation. One consultation involved women survivors of domestic violence; the other was linked to the examination by a Parliamentary Committee of the draft Communications Bill. The article concludes by suggesting that the success of online parliamentary consultations is dependent upon two groups of actors, parliamentarians and citizens, each of which must acquire new types of communication skills and develop new practices of operating.     

Presenting features in adult victims of satanist ritual abuse

This paper begins with a brief account of the author's own introduction to the subject of satanist ritual abuse (SRA). This is followed by clinical data concerning five adult victims of SRA, brought up within multi-generational Satanic cults. Clinical features are described, some of which are common to those seen in victims of other forms of child sexual abuse (CSA). Others appear to be more specific to SRA victims. The pattern of disclosure is described briefly but details of the content are not included. Professional scepticism about SRA is discussed and attention drawn to the similarity of these cases with those reported in the US literature. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of considering the possibility of SRA in patients presenting with these symptoms.     

Financial responsibility for children following divorce and remarriage

In this article the phenomena of the declining financial status of children following the divorce of their parents are explored. Two cultural beliefs are proposed as particularly relevant for understanding why some parents do not provide financially for their children following divorce: the belief that the nuclear family form is the only one that is normal and natural, and the belief that an individual's rights are of supreme importance. The consequences of these beliefs for the financial support of children are discussed, and suggestions for addressing the situation are presented.Marilyn Coleman and Lawrence Ganong received their doctorates from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Modern-day perception of historic footwear and its links to preference

The importance of emotion in consumer preference is explored in the subject of Kansei Engineering. The Kansei methodology has been successfully adopted by many large companies in recent years. Currently, a European Union Fifth framework project called 'Kensys' (Kansei Engineering System) is being implemented to look at the application of Kansei engineering in the field of footwear. The Kensys project is being conducted in collaboration with several SMEs and this paper reports a study that has been carried out with one of the SMEs who designs and makes reproduction historic and specialist footwear. In addition, respondent views on 'real' products from history and reproduction footwear are compared. We report on the views of respondents in general and look at gender differences, the comparison of non-experts' views versus experts' views and we also look at differences due to age. The study was carried out in the UK and in Spain. The views in both counties are compared.     

Sociology and the virtual: interactive mirrors,representational thinking and intensive power

This article explores the role of images in the workings of contemporary power. It examines one of the central ways in which sociology has approached images as representations and proposes an alternative understanding of images through the concepts of interactivity, intensity and the virtual. Focusing on the examples of three interactive mirrors, one a piece of artwork, another designed to be located in a designer shop and the other a medical mirror for tracking ‘vital signs’, it suggests that the mirrors emphasize the screen and, in so doing, disrupt a notion of images of representations. Images are instead brought to life; intensively experienced rather than extensively read. The article engages, first, with the increasing prevalence of screens and, second, with the moves in sociology towards theorizing the value of the concept of the virtual. Arguing that images are felt and lived out, the article seeks to contribute to how sociology has dealt with, and might further develop, the concept of the virtual as a productive way of understanding the relationships between images, screens, power and life.
