Partner Choice Patterns Among the Descendants of Turkish Immigrants in Europe

We examine the partner choice patterns of second-generation Turks in 13 European cities in seven countries. We not only compare intermarriage versus endogamous marriage, but also explicitly include the choice of a second-generation partner of the same origin and of a partner of other migrant origin as important alternatives. In Europe, populations are made up increasingly of migrants and their descendants resulting in new alternative partner options not open before. Findings suggest that second-generation Turks who choose a second-generation partner seem to be located between the partner choice of a first-generation and native partner in terms of family values and contact to non-coethnic peers. The choice of a partner of other migrant origin hardly differs in these characteristics from the choice of a native partner. Context variables such as group size and type of integration policies seem to play a role for the likelihood of having a first-generation versus a second-generation partner of Turkish origin but not for the likelihood of exogamous partner choice. A second-generation partner is the most popular choice in Germany but represents a minor option in the other countries. Furthermore, a partner of other migrant origin is more common among men but is in some countries more popular than a native partner among Turkish second-generation men and women.     

Real data, real learning and the London Olympics

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are coming to London in 2012, and there will be huge interest, especially among the young. Could the Games be used to involve students of all ages in a large scale project that involves and interests them to break down their fear of statistics and to motivate learning? Lavender Islands: the New Zealand study

Lavender Islands: Portrait of the Whole Family is the first national strengths-based study of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people in New Zealand. The 133-item survey was made available both by website and paper copy from April to July 2004. Multidisciplinary interest areas were developed by a community reference group, and included identity and self-definition, families of origin, relationships and sexuality, families of choice, immigration and internal migration, wellbeing, politics, income and spending, education, careers and leisure, community connections, challenges, and spirituality. A four-axis model of sexual identity was also tested; 2,269 responses were received. Of these 83% were from the website; 45% of responses were from women and 54% from men. Responses identified a robust, highly educated, relatively high-income, politically active LGB community. Male and female respondents experienced same-sex relationships and identity in significantly different ways.     

Family Courts: Their Formation and Jurisdiction

The transfer of jurisdiction over family matters to new tribunals to be known as 'Family Courts' is widely acknowledged to be desirable. But their precise constitution and the scope of their jurisdiction must be agreed upon before the establishment of Family Courts can be made politically acceptable. A case for the establishment of Family Courts is argued, and tentative proposals are made as to the constitution and status of Family Courts, their personnel and the matters over which they should have jurisdiction.     

Organised Voluntarism in Ireland

Historically Irish society has had a long tradition of grass roots voluntary community work. However, with the rise of neoliberalism in the 1990s, the Irish community and voluntary sector became increasingly subjected to government controls and restrictions. As a result, voluntary community work became more formally organised, centrally regulated and depoliticised. Such ‘organised voluntarism’ (Fye and Mulligan in Prog Hum Geogr 27:397–413, 2003) has since become part and parcel of contemporary community development initiatives in Ireland. While some UK research has explored the impact that this discursive and policy shift is having on volunteering, there is a dearth of Irish literature on this issue. This article presents an account of how and why this form of voluntarism took hold in contemporary Ireland. The establishment of Family Resource Centres in Ireland will be recalled and assessed to further illustrate the observations being made about organised voluntarism in Ireland.

Succession,strategy, culture,and change at Santropol Roulant

Santropol Roulant is an innovative nonprofit organization in Montreal focused on youth training, food security, and intergenerational community building. Since its inception, the Roulant has delivered more than 250,000 meals to isolated seniors and trained more than sixteen hundred young volunteers. Within a few short months, the Roulant will lose half its board members, five senior staff members, and its dedicated and wellliked executive director. The leadership turnover will be a highstakes test for the Roulant: Can they turn a period of vulnerability into an opportunity for growth and rejuvenation? This teaching case is intended to develop familiarity with key issues related to succession planning, transition management, and organizational change. Students will learn about managing a period of complex, high‐intensity organizational change, develop an understanding of the linkages between organizational form and strategic objectives, and become familiar with the structural and substantive issues facing transition teams.     

Side betting and playing the National Lottery: an exercise in policy design

This paper demonstrates a methodology for estimating the frequencies by which numbers are selected by National Lottery players by utilizing a twofold approach of a Multi-Response Non-Linear Regression model in conjunction with a suggested approximation function for number selections, which leads to an explanation of number choice in terms of the spatial effects of form design. It shows that in a marketplace, side betting is complementary with the main online draw product, and market forces produce close substitutes if side betting on the National Lottery is prohibited.
