Estimation of the number of vertices of different degrees in a graph

An unknown graph is partially observed by selecting a vertex sample and observing the edges in the subgraph induced by the sample. The sample is selected by either simple random sampling or Bernoulli sampling. We consider the problem of estimating the numbers of vertices of different degrees in the unknown graph by using the sample information. Unbiased estimators are given and their variance-covariance matrix is shown to depend on a set of intrinsic graph parameters which can hardly be satisfactorily estimated from the sample information without further assumptions. In particular, the problem of estimating the number of isolates (vertices of degree zero) is considered in some detail.     

A Self-Image Inventory: Its Theoretical Background,Reliability and Validity*

Wylie (1974) points out that there is a lack of adequate theoretical development in the investigation of the self-concept. The result is a proliferation of operational definitions with no clear understanding of the relationship between operations, between constructs, and between the constructs and their operationalizations. In this article we make explicit the theoretical component of self to which this Self-image Inventory relates. The article presents the inventory and twenty years of research experience with it. The inventory is found to be both reliable and valid for measuring the self-image as a role specific component of self.     

Are Parents Investing Less Time in Children? Trends in Selected Industrialized Countries

Trends in parental time invested in children since the 1960s are examined in 16 industrialized countries using time-use survey data. Despite the time pressures that confront today's families, parents appear to be devoting more time to children than they did 40 years ago. Results also suggest that mothers continue to devote more time to childcare than fathers, but the gender gap has been reduced. The consistency of these results across countries suggests a global trend toward an increase in parental time investment in children. Multivariate analysis of trends in parental time by type of activity was undertaken for Canada. It revealed a significant increase in parental time even after controlling for changes in the demographic composition of the population during the past few decades.     

Culturally Relevant Psychotherapy for Perinatal Depression in Low-Income Ob/Gyn Patients

To minimize barriers to care, ameliorate antenatal depression, and prevent postpartum depression in low-income women, we propose that a culturally relevant version of brief interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-B) may be an effective approach. IPT-B is a modified form of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), an efficacious treatment for depression that we have altered to address the needs of women who have difficulty adhering to longer courses of psychotherapy. Culturally relevant additions to IPT-B include (1) a pre-treatment engagement strategy consisting of an ethnographic interview accompanied by psychoeducation to engage women in treatment; (2) convenient delivery of IPT-B in a public care Ob/Gyn clinic where the women receive prenatal services; (3) flexible scheduling of treatment sessions at the clinic or on the phone; and 4) facilitation of access to social services.     

Intensive Family Preservation Services: The Perceptions of Client Families

This qualitative study seeks to understand the correlation between intensive family preservation services and family functioning in those families who have participated in services. The focus is on the perceptions of client families with respect to the impact of services on family functioning including communication, family dynamics, and parenting skills. The discussion centers on the responses of client families to a narrowly constructed survey instrument designed to capture their perceptions with respect to the services provided by case workers.
