The generalized T Birnbaum–Saunders family

In this work, we generalize the Birnbaum–Saunders distribution using the generalized t distribution alternatively to the normal distribution. The newly defined family is positively skewed and contains distributions with different kurtosis and skewness. We study its properties and special cases and demonstrate its use on some real data sets considering the maximum-likelihood estimation procedure.     

Two-Sided Generalized Exponential Distribution

We derive a generalization of the exponential distribution by making log transformation of the standard two-sided power distribution. We show that this new generalization is in fact a mixture of a truncated exponential distribution and truncated generalized exponential distribution introduced by Gupta and Kundu [Generalized exponential distributions. Aust. N. Z. J. Stat. 41(1999):173–188]. The newly defined distribution is more flexible for modeling data than the ordinary exponential distribution. We study its properties, estimate the parameters, and demonstrate it on some well-known real data sets comparing other existing methods.     

Moments of order statistics of Topp–Leone distribution

We derive explicit algebraic expressions for both of the single and product moments of order statistics from Topp–Leone distribution. We also give an identity about single moments of order statistics. These expressions will be useful for computational purposes.

建构的先锋：重审俞平伯新诗理论

与“五四”同时代人的流于“破坏”相比,俞平伯在新诗初创期一开始便表现出较强的独立精神,其新诗理论更多体现出建构性的指向:对初创期新诗音韵的打量;先觉于“白话”与“诗”的断裂;寻求新诗精神和艺术两面的革新,倡导新诗的无为效用;尝试新诗的做法理论等等。这些探索无疑展示了俞平伯作为“先锋诗人”之外的另面侧影。     

The E-Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian estimations for the proportional reversed hazard rate model based on record values

In this paper, E-Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian estimations of the shape parameter, when the underlying distribution belongs to the proportional reversed hazard rate model, are considered. Maximum likelihood, Bayesian and E-Bayesian estimates of the unknown parameter and reliability function are obtained based on record values. The Bayesian estimates are derived based on squared error and linear–exponential loss functions. It is pointed out that some previously obtained order relations of E-Bayesian estimates are inadequate and these results are improved. The relationship between E-Bayesian and hierarchical Bayesian estimations is obtained under the same loss functions. The comparison of the derived estimates is carried out by using Monte Carlo simulations. A real data set is analysed for an illustration of the findings.     

Truncated inverted generalized exponential distribution and its properties

The inverted generalized exponential distribution is defined as an alternative model for lifetime data. The existence of moments of this distribution is shown to hold under some restrictions. However, all the moments exist for the truncated inverted generalized exponential distribution and closed-form expressions for them are derived in this article. The distributional properties of this truncated distribution are studied. Maximum likelihood estimation method is discussed for the estimation of the parameters of the distribution both theoretically and empirically. In order to see the modeling performance of the distribution, two real datasets are analyzed.     

Are Turkish EFL pre-service teachers ready to manage intercultural challenges?

English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers, as the backbone of language teaching system, are expected to raise the awareness level of students’ intercultural communication competence by helping them relate their own culture to foreign cultures, empathise with foreign cultures’ perspectives and tolerate the ambiguities or differences. This study examines the relationship between certain personal factors such as age, gender, year of study, overseas experience and students’ preferences for Turkish movies over foreign ones and three predictors of intercultural communication competence namely, ambiguity tolerance, empathy and open-mindedness. The sample group of the study consisted of 145 prospective English teachers in the Educational Faculty of a state university in Turkey. The participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of two parts which investigated their background and perceived levels of ambiguity tolerance, open-mindedness and empathy in Turkish EFL context. The results indicated that half of pre-service EFL teachers had poor intercultural communication competence. In particular, males, the final-year students and those who had been abroad indicated higher levels of tolerance than their respective counterparts. Besides, age and students’ preferences for Turkish or foreign movies were not significant factors in any of the predictors of intercultural communication competence.
