Pre-War and Post-War Lebanese Immigrants in Melbourne

The following paper forms part of a thesis on the Lebanese community in Melbourne. The Lebanese community in Australia has not been the subject of any systematic study and thus the author attempted to investigate as many facets as possible of the life style of Melbourne's Lebanese immigrants. The purpose of this paper is to examine the causes and characteristics of immigration from Lebanon to Melbourne before and after the Second World War.     

ASYMPTOTIC THEORY FOR PRINCIPAL COMPONENT ANALYSIS: NON-NORMAL CASE1

This paper considers the asymptotic distributions of latent roots and vectors in principal components analysis when the parent population is non-normal. It is shown that sufficient of T. W. Anderson's asymptotic theory in the multivariate normal case carries over for some results to be obtained.     

Solving the two-stage cutting stock problem

This paper describes an important class of cutting stock problems not previously discussed in the literature. The problem is one of determining the patterns to be used in a two-stage cutting process with restrictions imposed on the locations of cuts in the first stage. A particularly difficult version of this problem from the plastic film industry is presented and solved.     

Collection and publication of population census data]

Some characteristics of the 1982 census of China are described. The discussion covers the manual and machine processing of data, how much detailed data will be available, individual and categorized data, and total and desired data. The major categories of data to be made available, including age, sex, fertility, and mortality statistics, are listed. The author notes that the results will be released in three stages, with the final results available by the end of 1984.     

Marital Adjustment and Irrational Ideas*

This study involved an attempt to explore the relationship between irrational ideas and marital discord, as posited in Rational-Emotive-Therapy. The results supported the hypothesis that individuals who experience marital difficulties demonstrate higher degrees of irrational thinking than individuals who do not experience such difficulties. Additional findings were interpreted on the basis of differences between males and females with respect to cognitive and perceptual orientation.     

Allocation of research and development funds: A zero-one goal programming approach

The research and development project selection process is one of the most difficult and important problems faced by management. It is typically complicated by indivisibility of projects and multiple and conflicting objectives, in addition to limitations on funding, facilities, and qualified researchers. In this paper a case example involving a high technology electrical equipment manufacturer is developed to illustrate this problem using zero—one goal programming to accommodate indivisibility of projects in addition to multiple and conflicting goals. The model presented is an attempt to provide managers with a robust tool for allocating scarce resources among research and development projects.
