Career transition in the Chinese context: a case study

This study explores career transition in the transitioning Chinese context. Given the transitioning nature in the overall Chinese society and the affected individuals involved in equally massive career transitions, this study investigates the career transition phenomenon through the lens of an MBA case in China. We examine career transition types and associated constraints and challenges. Two distinctive types of career transitions emerged as context specific career transitions that have not been documented in the literature. As the study only presented the tip of the iceberg of the large-scale career transition taking place in China, we further discuss the implications and future research directions on the career transition phenomenon.     

肝移植术后不常规放置腹腔引流管安全性及可行性探讨

目的:探讨肝移植术后不放置腹腔引流管的安全性及可行性?方法:回顾2010年1月~2013年8月在南京医科大学第一附属医院肝移植中心行肝移植术的患者资料,根据术中是否放置腹腔引流管分成引流组(n = 63)和非引流组(n = 112)?分析比较患者术前因素?术中因素以及围手术期并发症和住院时间?结果:患者在术前因素及术中腔静脉阻断时间?门静脉阻断时间及术中出血?输血情况均未见显著差异?两组患者术后并发症分级(P = 0.78)以及腹腔引流管相关并发症(出血?胆漏?大量腹水?切口渗液等)均未见明显差异?而两组在ICU住院天数及术后住院天数有显著差异(P < 0.01)?结论:肝移植术后不放置腹腔引流管是安全的?

中国产业结构演进的效益分析

产业结构对一国的经济发展起着十分重要的作用。改革开放以来,随着中国经济发展水平的提高,中国的产业结构也发生了很大变化。将钱纳里等人提出的产业结构演进的标准模式与中国产业结构的演进路径进行比较,发现中国在产业发展过程中存在产业结构失调问题,尤其是工业结构中轻重工业失衡比较明显。此外,中国产业结构的演进与世界产业结构演进的一般规律相差比较大。通过分析中国产业结构失调的原因,为我国产业结构的调整提出相应的对策建议。     

Mutual Benefits: Developing Relational Service Approaches Within Centrelink

Abstract

The machinery of income support can have considerable influence in people's lives, creating opportunities for social work but also tensions: access to vulnerable people, but not always on their terms. This paper argues that the challenge to social work is about more than holding on to professional discretion. It considers how social workers can influence service delivery approaches to work more relationally, pursuing a more equal involvement of clients, and recognising the complex interactive context of social and community life. The authors trace the development of such an approach within the Australian Government human services delivery agency Centrelink in Logan, Queensland, and briefly consider a parallel innovation in Newcastle, New South Wales. The authors suggest that grounding a large institutional social service agency in the realities of client and community experiences has mutual benefits, creating a more humanising, cooperative space, and displacing inefficient and sometimes tragic cycles of misunderstanding, confrontation, and disconnection.     

Resolving Mobility Constraints Impeding Rural Seniors' Access to Regionalized Services

Rural and small town places in developed economies are aging. While attention has been paid to the local transportation needs of rural seniors, fewer researchers have explored their regional transportation needs. This is important given policies that have reduced and regionalized many services and supports. This article explores mobility constraints impeding rural seniors' access to regionalized services using the example of northern British Columbia. Drawing upon several qualitative studies, we explore geographical, maintenance, organizational, communication, human resources, infrastructure, and financial constraints that affect seniors' regional mobility. Our findings indicate that greater coordination across multiple government agencies and jurisdictions is needed and more supportive policies and resources must be in place to facilitate a comprehensive regional transportation strategy. In addition to discussing the complexities of these geographies, the article identifies innovative solutions that have been deployed in northern British Columbia to support an aging population. This research provides a foundation for developing a comprehensive understanding of the key issues that need to be addressed to inform strategic investments in infrastructure and programs that support the regional mobility and, hence, healthy aging of rural seniors.     

A Model of Comparative Ethics Education for Social Workers

ABSTRACT

Social work ethics education models have not effectively engaged social workers in practice in formal ethical reasoning processes, potentially allowing personal bias to affect ethical decisions.¹ Using two of the primary ethical models from medicine, a new social work ethics model for education and practical application is proposed. The strengths and weaknesses of specific extant social work and medical models are reviewed and addressed by the new model and its educational process. The development, components, and use of the social work model are detailed, and an education process example is provided.     

Modeling the Impact of the Affordable Care Act and the Individual Mandate on Californians

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was designed to provide health insurance to uninsured or underinsured individuals. We used the California Simulation of Insurance Markets (CalSIM) model to predict the experience of consumers in California, who will be faced with new insurance options through Medicaid, employer-sponsored insurance, and the individual market in 2014 and beyond. We explored the response and characteristics of Californians who will and will not secure insurance coverage, with and without the “individual mandate” or minimum coverage requirement (MCR). We found 1.8 million Californians (38 %) of the 4.7 million eligible uninsured will secure coverage by 2019 with the MCR, while only 839,000 (18 % of the eligible uninsured) would obtain coverage without it.     

Academic Performance and Childhood Misnourishment: A Quantile Approach

This study assesses the impact of childhood BMI (underweight and overweight) on academic performance using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Class. The modeling framework is innovative in that it focuses primarily on (i) controlling for potential endogeneity of BMI on academic performance (as both may be driven by other household characteristics), and (ii) examining marginal effects for the tails of the performance distribution (i.e., those lower performing students). We use Instrumental Variable Quantile Regression to address these two issues. We found that a child BMI had differential impacts across the performance distribution: it affected lower performing students more and may contribute to the achievement gap.     

社会资本、多元化战略与公司业绩——基于企业家嵌入性网络的分析视角

本文以我国2005-2010年民营上市公司为样本,基于企业家嵌入性网络的视角对社会资本、多元化战略与公司业绩之间关系展开分析。实证结果表明,企业家社会资本不仅对公司多元化经营战略有积极推动作用,而且这种作用在法律制度建设较为薄弱的地区会更加突显。进一步研究表明,尽管多元化经营会损害企业绩效,但企业家社会资本会促使公司能力与多元化战略更加协同,能够显著减少多元化折价程度。本文在社会资本理论框架下对公司多元化现象展开讨论,不仅回答了企业家社会资本是否会对公司多元化产生影响的问题,而且回答了企业家社会资本是否作用于多元化与公司绩效二者关系的问题,丰富了多元化的相关研究。同时,本研究对于我们认识非正式制度在我国民营企业成长道路上的积极作用有着重要的启示。
