This study examined the relationship between decoding nonverbal cues and depressive symptoms in a general school population
of 606 children and adolescents (9–15 years). The focus was on the perceived intensity of several emotions in both basic and
non-basic facial expressions. The perceived intensities of anger and joy in low intensity facial expressions were related
to depression. The higher the perceived intensity of anger the more depressed adolescents were, whereas the reversed effect
was found for the perception of joy, but only in girls. These results suggest that the development of decoding biases in low
intensity facial expressions may be useful for understanding the development of individual and gender differences in depression
during adolescence.

This study examined age and gender differences in decoding nonverbal cues in a school population of 606 (pre)adolescents (9–15 years).
The focus was on differences in the perceived intensity of several emotions in both basic and non-basic facial expressions.
Age differences were found in decoding low intensity and ambiguous faces, but not in basic expressions. Older adolescents
indicated more negative meaning in these more subtle and complex facial cues. Girls attributed more anger to both basic and
non-basic facial expressions and showed a general negative bias in decoding non-basic facial expressions compared to boys.
Findings are interpreted in the light of the development of emotion regulation and the importance for developing relationships.

This article presents an overview of the philosophy and practical principles underlying the Linking Human Systems Approach based on the theory of resilience in individuals, families, and communities facing crisis, trauma, and disaster. The Link Approach focuses on tapping into the inherent strength of individuals and their families and emphasizes resilience rather than vulnerability. It has been successfully used in combating critical public health problems, such as addiction, HIV/AIDS, and recovery from major trauma or disaster. Also, three specific models of Link intervention aimed at the individual, family, and community levels are discussed, with special emphasis on the family-level intervention. These interventions are directed toward mobilizing resources for long-term physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing. 相似文献

A survey asked 190 pregnant women their opinions on whether a hypothetical other woman would be justified in having an abortion under ten different circumstances, four of which related to abnormalities of the fetus. They were then asked whether they would be justified in having an abortion under these same circumstances. Also assessed were these women's views concerning the justifiability of abortion for a specific group of fetal abnormalities, neural tube defects. Respondents were more likely to view abortion as justifiable for a hypothetical other than for themselves. However, there was no evidence that pregnant women's views about abortion are more conservative than those of the general public. The majority of respondents considered abortion of a defective fetus to be justified, both for themselves and for others. The best predictor of abortion attitudes was respondent's views about the ideal number of children in a completed family.This research was supported by a grant from Maternal and Child Health Research, Bureau of Community Health Services, DHHS. In this paper we explore the broader policy determinants of the de-hospitalization of mental patients in Nova Scotia between the 1950s and 1980s and trace the background to the development of occupational rehabilitation programs in the community. For employment programs, the government chose to rely on non-profit NGOs as the suppliers of services. Abstract This study uses data from a series of comparative case studies to analyse the interorganizational networks of business associations providing workforce development services in the United States. Three aspects of the networks were of particular interest, including (a) the form the partnerships took, (b) the trade-off to involving educational or community vs. business partners in providing workforce development services and (c) the strengths of associations in brokering services to adults or youth. The findings demonstrate that business associations work in intermediary networks or provide their services directly. The conclusions suggest that human resource development professionals should work more actively with local business associations to recruit, train and provide supports for workers in US firms. 相似文献

The existence of a “boy crisis” in the United States is a topic of public policy debate. This study examines the state of
American boyhood, using not only the commonly reviewed indicators of school achievement but also mental health, premature
death, injury, delinquency, and arrests. Boys are in trouble in many areas: low rates of literacy, low grades and engagement
in school, high dropout from school, and dramatically higher rates of placement in special education, suicide, premature death,
injuries, and arrests. Girls, however, suffer from other problems, especially depression, suicidal ideation and attempts,
and eating disorders, and are less likely to achieve at the very highest levels in mathematics and science. This study argues
that both boys and girls suffer from characteristic problems, but the issues affecting boys are serious and neglected.

We examine the effects of mothers' strategies of combining employment and welfare receipt during the first 3 years of their child's life on the child's cognitive development, behavior problems, and home learning environment at ages 5 to 6. We compare the child outcomes of those mothers who were continuously employed and received no welfare with (a) those who worked some or all of the 3 years and also received public assistance and (b) those who were totally dependent on public assistance. We studied children in single‐parent families (N= 1271 ) living below 200% of the poverty threshold using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth—Child Supplement. No negative association was found on most child outcomes with a mother's employment whether or not it was combined with public assistance. However, mothers' not working at all and receiving financial support solely from AFDC was associated with negative child outcomes. We discuss the implications of these findings for the possible effects of the new welfare laws on families and young children. 相似文献
