The application of a computer package for drawing cause maps (NETGRAPH) to a cause map originally given by Hall as part of a study of the ‘Saturday Evening Post’ is described. It is shown how the cause map produced by the computer reveals a number of subsystems. The way in which these can be more clearly revealed by manually redrawing the computer cause map is demonstrated. The subsystems thus obtained are shown to be identical to those given by Hall, except in one case where one of Hall's subsystems is split into two. It is suggested that this split is sensible from an organisational analysis standpoint. The organisational system is analysed in terms of a number of insights derived from the computer-produced cause map including its apparent lack of a formal model of the impact of the Magazine's decisions on the environment. Such a model is claimed by Beer to be indispensable, from a systems theory standpoint, to any ‘viable’ organisational system. The conclusions derived from this analysis are similar to those drawn by Hall, though they do extend his analysis in several respects. It is argued that the results show that the package is of potential use in analysing cause maps of organisations. 相似文献

Abstract In the first section of this paper, Dr. Whitaker argues that there are both practical and heuristic reasons for developing a systematic method for assessing the quality of psychotherapy in a university mental health service. He maintains that, though the task of psychotherapy quality assessment is a complex undertaking, it is possible to take steps toward its accomplishment in a responsible way while still keeping the task within manageable proportions. In the second section, Dr. Sarnat describes one in a series of efforts at quality assessment at the Mental Health Division of the University of Massachusetts Health Services. She describes the development of a new method of recordkeeping and record review, and the results of a review of three different samples of records. She concludes that the method is feasible, useful, and meaningful for quality assessment in that setting, although the method is admittedly limited in what it can measure. In the final section, Dr. Arnstein comments on the above, adding a note of caution about both the feasibility and the wisdom of embarking on a program of quality assessment of psychotherapy. He elaborates some of the difficulties that may prevent one from arriving at a valid assessment. 相似文献

Abstract Patients with psychosomatic conditions, who comprise a significant proportion of students seeking health care, demonstrate clearly the need for effective functioning of the health care team. These patients usually present themselves with problems of physical illness for practical, social, and psychodynamic reasons. Socially they seek to avoid the stigma attached to acknowledging psychological problems. Psychodynamically, such patients have transformed psychological problems into physical illness and need help in reversing this transformation. Attending only the physical illness or dismissing the patient because “it's all in your head” are inappropriate responses deeply embedded in popular culture. Case illustrations are used to show the need for careful diagnosis from physical and psychological standpoints, for skillful referral and interdisciplinary collaboration, and to show how psychotherapy can reverse the psychosomatic process and the underlying psychological determinants. The illustrations include cases of headache, asthma, ulcers, and disturbances of sleep and appetite. Both specific psychotherapeutic technique and overall theory are discussed. 相似文献

The declining employment fortunes of Britain's non-white communities, relative to whites, are explained. To achieve this comparison, some historical official sources of unemployment data are reviewed. The earliest known official time series on unemployment of non-whites dates back to 1960. This historical context is explored, especially the reluctance to make the early data more widely known. An unemployment series for non-white males and females from 1970 to 1999 is derived in two separate ways by splicing together official sources. These series are compared with unemployment of whites to demonstrate a relative increase in unemployment of non-whites. 相似文献
