The public is personal: reflections on the ethical dimensions of selfie research

Derived from the standards of feminist qualitative research, this methodological reflection develops ‘the public is personal’ as a mode of critical awareness for visual culture researchers working with social media data such as the selfie. Against the prevalent logic of ‘but the data is already public’, this paper draws on empirical and theoretical insights to argue that the publicness of digital data is no indication of an individual’s consent to its use in contexts beyond how they originally intended. Rather than treating digital data as purely metric or divorcing it from its creator, researchers must be cognisant of the complex negotiations of privacy, agency, and subjectivity such artefacts represent. By centring the person behind the data, ‘the public is personal’ asserts the qualitative dimensions of publicly available digital data as key ethical considerations which defy generalities and require adaptive, reflexive responses.     

A Right to Benefit from International Research: A New Approach to Capacity Building in Less-Developed Countries

This article proposes a means by which benefits provided in international research collaborations might be employed to strengthen health care, research, and other capacities in less-developed countries. The Declaration of Helsinki and CIOMS Guidelines define certain expectations of benefits, but these requirements are ambiguous, logistically problematic, and studies suggest they are inconsistently upheld. Drawing on the principle of respect for persons, a right to benefit from hosting externally-sponsored research is proposed. This right guarantees host communities benefits of a certain value, the nature and use of which is controlled by indigenous personnel. Suggestions are made as to how implementation of this right, using structured incentives, may systematically promote capacity building in host communities.     

SOCIAL DYNAMICS OF OBESITY

We explain the recent increases in obesity in the United States with a model involving falling food prices, endogenous social body weight norms, and heterogeneous human metabolism. Calibrating an analytical choice model to American women in the 30- to 60-yr-old age bracket, we compare the predicted weight distributions to National Health and Nutrition Examination survey data spanning (intermittently) the years 1976–2000. The model, the first to describe explicitly complete weight distribution dynamics for this group, predicts average weights and obesity rates with considerable accuracy and captures a significant portion of the recent growth in upper quantile weights. Incidence of Drug and Solvent Abuse in 'Normal' Fourth and Fifth Year Comprehensive School Children--Some Socio-behavioural Characteristics

Summary A sample of 807 fourth and fifth formers completed a self-reportstudy that yielded levels of solvent and drug misuse. Nineteenper cent were involved with some type of misuse, 4% with solventabuse only, 4% with serious (hard) drug abuse and 15% drug abusemainly involving cannabis. Significant social characteristicsfound amongest the abusers were higher levels of father unemployement(28%), absent parent (32%) and belonging to a larger family.Abuse was significantly asociated with under-age drinking, vandalism,truancy, fighting and smoking. The majority of the sample (95%),however, considered abuse to be a serious matter.     

Behavioural-Cognitive Groups for Adult Psychiatric Patients: A Pilot Study

Ireland, BT41 4AB Summary This paper describes a pilot study of a behavioural-cognitivegroup programme for adult psychiatric patients who presentedwith a variety of problems. The time-limited groups aimed toteach behavioural analysis skills through the selection, observationand treatment of a target problem by each group member. Resultsof ten such groups are analysed and indicate that members couldoperationally define a problem and implement behavioural changewhich was maintained at six month follow up. However, deficitsin formal behavioural analysis skills were evidenced.     

Environment and mental health: the impact of new buildings on the programs and organization of a psychiatric hospital*

Ce texte porte sur la relation réciproque entre l'environnement physique et les programmes réalisés dans cet environnement, et plus spécialement sur les effets de changements dans l'environnement physique. Des observateurs-participants ont été présents avant, pendant, et après le déplacement d'une partie d'un hôpital mental provincial d'un édifice archaique du dix-neuvième siécle à des commodités modernes sur le même terrain. Des observations de même que de la documentation historique sont présentées de façon à illustrer comment des changements de valeurs et d'attitudes par rapport à la maladie mentale sont liés à des modifications du milieu physique de traitement. The reciprocal relationship between the effects of the physical environment and the programs conducted in that environment are discussed, with a particular emphasis on the effects of change in the physical environment. Participant observers were present before, during, and after the relocation of part of a provincial mental hospital from an archaic nineteenth-century building to modern facilities on the same grounds. Data from the study, as well as historical material, are offered to illustrate some of the ways in which changed values and attitudes about mental illness are linked to modifications in physical settings where treatment is given.
