Association between serum levels of testosterone and biomarkers of subclinical atherosclerosis

Objective: To investigate the association between serum levels of testosterone and biomarkers of subclinical atherosclerosis based on data from 119 middle-aged men of the general population.

Methods: Testosterone, Apolipoprotein A-1 (ApoA-1), Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apolipoprotein B-to-Apolipoprotein A-1 ratio (ApoB-to-ApoA-1), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and fibrinogen levels were measured. Data were also gathered based on age, BMI, waist circumference, smoking, alcohol consumption, and family history of cardiovascular diseases. Men were classified into two groups based on testosterone levels: hypogonadal (testosterone ≤12?nmol/L) and eugonadal men (testosterone >12?nmol/L).

Results: When compared to eugonadal, the hypogonadal men were significantly older (56?years vs. 55?years, p?=?.03), had greater BMI (28?kg/cm² vs. 26?kg/cm², p?=?.01), and higher waist circumference (104?cm vs. 100?cm, p?=?.01). Moreover, ApoB, ApoB-to-ApoA-1 ratio, and hsCRP were significantly higher in hypogonadal men compared to eugonadal men (1.1?g/L vs. 1.0?g/L, p?=?.03), (0.8 vs. 0.7, p?=?.03), (3.3?mg/L vs. 2.0?mg/L, p?=?.01), respectively. On the other hand, ApoA-1 and fibrinogen levels did not differ significantly between groups (p?>?.05). In an adjusted multivariate regression analysis model, only ApoB showed a significant negative association with testosterone levels (β?=??0.01; 95% CI?=??0.02, ?1.50; p?=?.04).

Conclusion: Testosterone levels showed an inverse relation to ApoB, a biomarker implicated in subclinical atherosclerosis. These findings support the hypothesis that low testosterone levels play a role in atherosclerosis.

Long‐term employment intensity of sectoral output growth in Tunisia

This article examines the long‐term ability of Tunisian industries to generate employment opportunities. Using a panel data set of 15 industries over 1983–2010, the authors estimate their long‐run output–employment elasticities, using the “mean group” estimator. They argue that economic policy should target the most labour‐intensive industries, particularly service industries and export manufacturing industries. After demonstrating the inability of the mining industry to absorb labour, the authors highlight the long‐run jobless growth in the hotel, bar and restaurant industry and suggest that future investment in this industry will yield no results and that future tourism policy should focus rather on para‐tourism activities.     

Citizens of the margin: citizenship and youth participation on the Moroccan social web

This paper examines how marginalized youth in Morocco use YouTube to contest hegemonic discourses of state power and institutional practices of social exclusion. The paper analyses a user-generated, YouTube web-series, Tales of Bouzebal, as a performance of marginality and a social critique of state bureaucracies and institutions in the context of post-Arab Spring Morocco. Using a combined method of textual and discourse analyses, the paper argues that the new media practices of producing and consuming user-generated video are best understood as practices of cultural citizenship that contribute to social change through the production of counter-discursive political subjectivities among youth in MENA. The paper posits that the concept of citizenship needs to be expanded to account for citizen participatory media practices that contest the conditions of marginality and inequality sustained by normative definitions of citizenship.

On the Dirichlet distributions on symmetric matrices

In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Dirichlet distribution on symmetric matrices which represents the multivariate version of the Connor and Mosimann generalized real Dirichlet distribution. We establish some properties concerning this generalized distribution. We also extend to the matrix Dirichlet distribution a remarkable characterization established in the real case by Darroch and Ratcliff.     

Periodic integer-valued GARCH(1, 1) model

This article deals with some probabilistic and statistical properties of a periodic integer-valued GARCH(1,1) model. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the periodical stationary, both in mean and second order, are established. The closed-forms of the mean and the second moment are, under these conditions, obtained. The condition of the existence of higher moment orders and their explicit formula in terms of the parameters are established. The autocovariance structure is studied, while providing the closed-form of the periodic autocorrelation function. The Yule–Walker and the likelihood estimations of the underlying parameters are obtained. A simulation study and an application on real dataset are provided.     

An On-Line Estimation Algorithm for Periodic Autoregressive Models

This paper develops an on-line estimation algorithm for periodic autoregressive models (PAR). Indeed, we provide an adaptation of the well known recursive least squares algorithm (RLS), which has been successfully applied to classical autoregressive models (AR), to deal with PAR models. The obtained estimators are shown to be asymptotically efficient under mild conditions. Moreover, the performance of the periodic least squares algorithm (PRLS) is assessed via an intensive simulation study.
