In this article, the concept of dereification in religion is developed, both theoretically and empirically, by analyzing Zen Buddhism. The central thesis is that Zen Buddhism, by virtue of the Mahayana concept of "emptiness" ( sunyata ), constitutes a dereifying persepctive. In addition, using the phenomenology of Alfred Schutz, the experience of dereifying perception, which is acquired through Zen meditation, is described as a state of focused durée . Furthermore, several of the interactional methods through which Zen practitioners demonstrate their dereifying perspective are analyzed from an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic perspective, and the role of these methods in koan training is explained.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The authors explored the relationship between self-reported vigorous exercise frequency and alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use behaviors among first-year college students who self-identified as drinkers. PARTICIPANTS: The authors recruited 391 freshman college students in Northeast Florida to participate in an alcohol abuse prevention study. METHODS: The authors conducted a multivariate analysis of variance to assess the relationship between vigorous exercise frequency and 6 measures of ATOD use at baseline. RESULTS: Frequent exercisers drank significantly more often and a significantly greater quantity than did infrequent exercisers. However, frequent exercisers smoked cigarettes significantly less often than did infrequent exercisers. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that vigorous exercise frequency is differentially associated with alcohol and cigarette consumption among college students. Researchers should further examine the reasons for these differences.  相似文献

This article highlights a silent disease that threatens the health and vitality of older men. Among elderly men and women, osteoporosis is among one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Once perceived as only a female dominated disease, osteoporosis is now known to be gender blind. The following discussion will review the epidemiology and pathology of osteoporosis, and identify the concerns raised for men, including neglect. Special management considerations for older men and recommendations for future research into this overlooked major health problem will be explored. Better understanding of how osteoporosis affects older men may help to encourage prevention strategies earlier in life, appropriate screening and monitoring, as well as more effective treatment later in life.  相似文献

This article outlines the implementation of a journal club for master's and doctoral social work students interested in mental health practice. It defines educational journal clubs and discusses the history of journal clubs in medical education and the applicability of the model to social work education. The feasibility of implementing journal clubs in a school of social welfare is highlighted. The journal club received high ratings on student evaluations indicating participants thought it was a valuable addition to their education. Journal clubs align with the program mission and goals of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) set forth by the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE), and they can be an affordable, easily implemented, and sustainable supplement to traditional research curricula.  相似文献

This article provides a framework for using the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to help social work field instructors work effectively with students of a variety of personality types. The article describes the MBTI and includes strategies for using it to assess students' needs, determine issues in supervisory style, and enhance supervisor–student relationships. Within the framework are strategies for respecting and responding to type differences and for learning to act against preference to work effectively with students of different types.
