Reasoning that life in the U.S.-Mexico border region is sufficiently different from life in non-border regions this paper asks whether proximity to the border has a significant impact on presidential voting. County level data from four border states, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, over five presidential elections, 1992-2008, are examined using a both cross-sectional and panel data analysis. The authors conclude that there is a border effect that favors Democratic candidates and that fades as distance from the border increases.  相似文献

Both laboratory and field experiments have limitations that likely account for the recent decline in their usage among organizational researchers. In this article, we introduce situated experiments as an experimental approach that optimizes the strengths of both laboratory and field experiments in organizational research while mitigating the weaknesses of each. We highlight four recently published studies using situated experiments. Drawing on these examples, we illustrate how the proper use of situated experiments can minimize threats to internal validity and ensure the ethical treatment of research participants.  相似文献

Firms competing primarily on knowledge resources face problems in informing relevant external stakeholders about the value of that knowledge without losing its value. This knowledge may be transferred to stakeholders only at great expense, or that transfer of knowledge to stakeholders may simultaneously promote its transfer to competitors. By conceptualizing firms and the environments within which they compete to differ in levels of uncertainty, this paper develops a framework to examine signaling mechanisms firms can use to effectively signal the value of their knowledge to two key stakeholder groups, the capital and labor markets, while avoiding associated transfer problems.  相似文献

This article reviews the careers of five successful CEOs to identify three core ingredients behind the effective management of large corporate groups. From nearly 40 years experience as a CEO and a consultant to CEOs, the author distinguishes culling standards of performance, values and design that motivate people and appropriate and positive growth paths as three ingredients most likely to increase the chances of success for corporate leaders.
