This discourse presents three relevant books about family businesses. These books comprise the “minimum knowledge”, necessary for a coach who consults managers of family businesses. Different patterns of analysis of several disciplines, from the political economics up to the depth psychology, are referred to, and some family firms of different size and different age are described.

Coaching managers in East Germany The author discusses problems of the transformation process in East Germany. The main thesis: The patterns of behaviour established in the former DDR are still effective. This is demonstrated by the situation of managers and the company’s internal milieus. In order to support managers active in East Germany it is important, to know the patterns practised in the DDR and to transform them into those, which are compatible with the free enterprise economy. To increase the motivation, managers should be encouraged to refer to the former experiences of community and to meet in this way the specific needs of the employees.

Zentrum und Peripherie im globalen Wissenschaftssystem

We use an experimental design to analyse the effect of symbolic capital of a nation’s higher education system and of single universities on students’ opportunities for international mobility. Fake applications of international doctoral students were sent to German sociology professors, who were asked to serve as supervisors during a research visit in Germany. Our fake applicants come from four different universities: Yale, Pennsylvania State University, National University Singapore, and Vietnam National University Hanoi. The results show that applicants from both US institutions get more positive, more informative and more personal feedback than applicants from Singapore and Vietnam. Moreover, the symbolic capital of a university seems more important than the quality of a specific department, which is problematic in normative terms.     

Abusive Supervision in Work Organizations – als Ursache für Workstress und Burnout

A growing literature explores abusive supervision as non-physical form of hostility by managers against there direct reports. However, researchers have used different terminology to explore phenomena that overlap with abusive supervision. The author therefore provides a review of literature how an US-american author, who researches some years ago about abusive supervision explains. The antecedents and consequences of abusive supervision and directions for future research are discussed.
