A change model for resolution of stress

Watzlawick's change model is proposed for analyzing lifestyle stress in variant family forms. Two types of change are examined with regard to stress resolution. Adequately functioning family systems are autocorrective with structural changes that correspond to relationship rule changes.     

A 75° Angle Constraint for Plane Minimal T1 Trees

In this paper it is shown that the minimum angle between any 2 edges of an Euclidean plane minimal T1 tree, or 3-size Steiner tree, is at least 75°.     

Multiethnic Children Portrayed in Children's Picture Books

The portrayal of multiethnic children in picture books provides a unique opportunity for social workers, other helping professionals, and parents to work more effectively with a population of preschool multiethnic children. Twenty-two picture books portraying multiethnic children and their families are identified and evaluated. Their relevance for social work practice with children and families is discussed.     

Gender Differences in Perceived Disciplinary Fairness

This exploratory study coded and analysed 120 behaviours on videotaped data of 111 male and 30 female managers engaged in disciplinary discussions with one of their unionized employees. Four categories of behaviour were coded: non‐verbal communication, speech characteristics, leadership and interactional justice. A factor analysis of the results generated 14 factors, ten of which were correlated with experts’ ratings of disciplinary fairness. Female managers exhibited significantly higher levels of seven of the ten behavioural factors. Female managers also made more supportive interruptions than male managers and took more time for the disciplinary discussion, both of which were positively correlated with disciplinary fairness. The results suggest that leadership and communication styles commonly found in females may lead them to be better equipped than male managers to manage employee discipline situations.     

Gaining and losing a friend I never knew: Reading Claire Philip's journal and poetry

Claire Philip used her journal of dying to sustain and know a self that was constantly changing under the threat of imminent extinction. This article discusses both the uniqueness and the universality of Philip's moving poetry and journal entries.     

Interpersonal and economic resources and marital quality

This article examines the impact of interpersonal and economic resources in the context of marital interaction. The Foa and Foa (1973) typology of resources is used to conceptualize how interpersonal and economic resources are interrelated. It is proposed in this article that marital quality is, in part, dependent upon both spouses having access to a variety of types of resources. Implications are drawn for how the changing context of economic issues influences marital quality as we approach the end of the century.The author would like to express appreciation to Anna L.
