In a reprise of Lowe and Gardner's (2000) review of The Leadership Quarterly's (LQ) first decade as a premier outlet for scholarly leadership research, we review 353 articles published in LQ during its second decade. Multiple methods were employed to prepare this review, including: interviews with the journal's current Senior Editor and Associate Editors; an assessment of LQ's impact, reputation, and most cited articles through citation analyses; a content analysis of article type (theory, empirical, and methods), contributors (e.g., discipline, nationality, and institutional affiliation), theoretical foundations, research strategies, sample location/type, data collection methods, and analytical procedures; survey and follow-up focus groups conducted with LQ Editorial Review Board members; and qualitative analyses to assess the prevalent themes, contributions, and trends reflected in LQ during its second decade. Uncertainty in the duration of surgical procedures can cause long patient wait times, poor utilization of resources, and high overtime costs. We compare several heuristics for scheduling an Outpatient Procedure Center. First, a discrete event simulation model is used to evaluate how 12 different sequencing and patient appointment time‐setting heuristics perform with respect to the competing criteria of expected patient waiting time and expected surgical suite overtime for a single day compared with current practice. Second, a bi‐criteria genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine if better solutions can be obtained for this single day scheduling problem. Third, we investigate the efficacy of the bi‐criteria GA when surgeries are allowed to be moved to other days. We present numerical experiments based on real data from a large health care provider. Our analysis provides insight into the best scheduling heuristics, and the trade‐off between patient and health care provider‐based criteria. Finally, we summarize several important managerial insights based on our findings. 相似文献

This paper draws on extant literature to identify five dimensions that are deployed by a wide range of social groups to claim and achieve authenticity in variety of social settings: being honest or real, forgoing external rewards or compensation, coming from or living in the right place or time, embodying or participating in something, and consuming correctly. We then demonstrate the utility of these five dimensions of authenticity in action by applying them to two different qualitative studies of countercultural Christians. Our analysis of these data shows that different communities have different understandings of what makes one authentic, but the five dimensions that we outline in this article make comparisons across different groups possible. 相似文献

Undercounting Medicaid Enrollment in Maryland: Testing the Accuracy of the Current Population Survey
The U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey is the most commonly cited source for estimates of the insurance status
of Americans, but there are concerns that the data may undercount participation in public programs such as Medicaid. Such
a Medicaid undercount may result from survey respondents not acknowledging Medicaid coverage because they are unaware that
they are enrolled in Medicaid, because they have not recently received health services, due to the stigma associated with
receiving public assistance programs, or due to simple recall bias. This paper estimates the extent to which the Current Population
Survey undercounts Medicaid participation in a single mid-Atlantic state, Maryland. We administered the Current Population
Survey questionnaire to a random selection of known Medicaid participants. We find evidence that the Current Population Survey
significantly undercounts Medicaid participation in Maryland and that much of the undercount could be corrected if the survey
better identified the Maryland Medicaid program. We also find that recall bias may contribute to the undercount as well. There
was no indication that stigma contributed to any undercount. Though not an aim of this study, we find that the Medicaid undercount
may contribute to an over count of the number of uninsured.

Faculty members in tenure-track positions must demonstrate proficiency in teaching and scholarship, although different types of higher education institutions carry different sets of expectations and requirements in these areas. Teacher-scholars, who integrate teaching and research through diverse means, largely work at teaching focused institutions. Even in such teaching-focused institutions, however, there has been a growing demand for faculty to have high levels of scholarly productivity, typically in the form of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations...At the same time, teacher-scholars, due to limited resources, do not have great access to national conferences, leading them to rely more heavily on regional conferences to display their scholarly work. This study examines the utility of regional associations in meeting the career needs of teacher-scholars. Examining conference programs from the Pacific Sociological Association for five recent years, and comparing them to the national conference (the American Sociological Association) we show that teacher-scholars rely heavily on regional conferences to highlight their successes, often extending beyond scholarship. Regional conferences also offer a more flexible program than the national conference for defining the work of teacher-scholars. While teacher-scholars and Ph.D. granting faculty alike engage at both the national and regional conferences, both conferences tend to perpetuate a hierarchy of academia that emphasizes more traditional standards of scholarly success. 相似文献

Changes in gay and bisexual men’s connectedness to the gay community are related to the declining public visibility of HIV/AIDS and greater acceptance for homosexuality and bisexuality in mainstream society. Little work, however, has focused on perceived acceptance for subgroups within the gay community or broader society. Using interviews (n = 20) and a survey (n = 202) of gay and bisexual men in a mid-sized Canadian city, we find perceived hierarchies of acceptance for the various subgroups as well as an age effect wherein middle-aged men perceive the least acceptance for all groups. These differences are linked with the uneven impact of social, political, and institutional changes relevant to gay and bisexual men in Canada. 相似文献

The sexual orientation–related content of 60 school counselor preparation programs across 22 U.S. states is described. The findings include the percentage of curricular time devoted to sexual orientation–related topics, the specific sexual orientation–related topics addressed, and the locations of sexual orientation–related curriculum within programs (e.g., foundations, methods, and fieldwork/practica). The research also investigated any relationship between sexual orientation–related curriculum and faculty demographics and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) accreditation. Research suggests that bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth is a national problem that requires immediate intervention. The purpose of this article is to (a) discuss the critical need for a multidisciplinary approach to creating safe schools for sexual minority youth utilizing a social justice framework, (b) present an allyhood model to serve as a training framework, and (c) offer an exemplar for schools. By embracing a multidisciplinary approach to address the safety and belonging needs of LGBTQ youth, school psychologists and counselors can become leaders of systems-level change, poised to make a difference in the lives of LGBTQ students. 相似文献

Emerging research suggests that existing culture, including religious culture, serves to constrain and enable the rhetoric
and claims of social actors in situations of conflict and change. Given that religious institutions continue to have significant
authority in framing moral debates in the United States, we hypothesize that groups connected to each other through a religious
tradition will share similar orientations towards the moral order, shaping the kinds of rhetoric they use and the kinds of
claims they can make. To test this, we compare the official rhetoric of the 25 largest religious denominations on gay and
lesbian issues, as well as their orientation towards the moral order more broadly, with the rhetoric of each denomination’s
respective movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender inclusion, affirmation, or rights. We use Kniss’ heuristic
map of the moral order to analyze and theorize about the patterns that emerge from these comparisons. Ultimately, we find
that the existing rhetoric of the parent denomination on gay and lesbian issues, along with the broader moral stances they
take, do appear to shape the rhetoric and ideologies of associated pro-LGBT organizations. This provides support for the notion
that existing culture, belief, and rhetoric shape the trajectories of conflict and change. 相似文献
